Harrop MPTS Hearing

I thought this may be of interest:

www.mpts-uk.org/hearings-and-decisions/medical-practitioners-tribunals/dr-adrian-harrop-nov-21

The tribunal will inquire into the allegation that from 10 May 2018 to 23 November 2019, Dr Harrop inappropriately used his Twitter account to post tweets that were offensive and/or insulting and/or inappropriate in nature and some of which were intended to intimidate.

Isn't that the defence barrister?

Ekofisk · 17/11/2021 14:35

No - RD is the GMC barrister I believe?

Good morning on Day 2 of Dr Adrian Harrop's tribunal (abbreviated to AH). We are due to start at 11am today. I will use initials RD for the GMC representative Mr Ryan Donoghue and GP for Harrop’s representative Mr Giles Powell.

ItsLittoralViolins · 17/11/2021 14:39

Bugger. I cut and paste "GMC representative is Mr Giles Powell (GP)" from tribunal tweeting from Monday.

Sorry if that's wrong. Better check, @BoreOfWhabylon.

Reading that VICE article I feel even more hopeful about the sanctions from this hearing.

Without reading it, it struck me as an odd choice that someone in trouble for "speaking out", is speaking out during the hearing process. He does not appear contrite at all.

To his critics he says "You will not win" which translates to "I am not wrong"

Have a good week Harrop!!

@donquixotedelamancha

Mm, that’s a bit like declaring you’ve read the T&Cs before every online purchase though. More honoured in the breach than the observance.

I don't agree. My job involves similarly detailed professional standards. I can't give you chapter and verse but I can certainly give you the key points.

I'd potentially expect dismissal for comments like his, and that's without two warnings.

If you're not a doctor, I don't see the relevance of the norms of your profession to AH? So it's not really a matter of agreement or disagreement, is it? It's different professions having different norms.

I'm talking about the norms in medicine. There are 32 GMC guidelines over 11 categories. Most doctors would be hard-pressed to list the categories, let alone all the the guidelines, so many won't be aware that the GMC even has a social medical guideline (though of course AH knew after he was warned). And most tick the 'Yes I have read the guidance' box on their appraisal because it's one of 100s of documents they have to read every day, and they couldn't function if they actually read them all properly. That may be uncomfortable to hear, but it's the truth.

And dismissal isn't the issue here - it's (potentially) erasure from the professional register, the thresholds for which tend to be considerably higher than dismissal from an individual employer.

Again, I am not advocating for AH's position; I am just trying to give context that will help non-medical posters interpret what is going on.

Sarah Philmore on Twitter just commented that this is a long, drawn out (and expensive) process for just a slap on the wrist.

Cbtb · 17/11/2021 14:53

@MissLucyEyelesbarrow trainees have to know the GMC guidance, they also have to evidence how they are complying with it in their portfolio. Medical schools frequently and in depth teach these issues and the social media guidance. The BMA has also posted advice on the guidance. The GMC have many many flaws including being iNsitutionaly racist imo but they also have online training and case studies on their guidance for trainees and other HCPs to do. Let alone the yearly mandatory training your employer makes you suffer through

No young-ish UK trained doctor has any business saying they don’t know it. Not off by heart of course but know it exists and know when to go and look at it.

JemimaTab · 17/11/2021 14:56

It seems rather unwise to be running off to blab to the press about an ongoing tribunal case to me. Although I suppose we should expect it from Harrop.
I notice they’ve used a “serious doctor” photo of him in the article instead of his usual “auditioning for a role on CBBC”.

I asked MNHQ to withdraw my posts just to be on the safe side. Sorry that a couple who quoted me also were taken down.

WitchButNotTheFunKind · 17/11/2021 15:08

@Cailleach1

The witnesses and tweets involved in the case are currently being kept anonymous, but VICE World News was sent all of the material being discussed in the tribunal, including the full dossier of allegations, witness statements, and documents defending the doctor.

Interestingly, they don't spell out the 'comment's by the defendant. Maybe he/she/furry wouldn't appear quite so righteous if they did. Are they too damning and would spoil him/her/furry identifying as more sinned against than sinning?

Many women will have made complaints on the understanding they would not suffer repercussions as a result. The thought of Vice, who are trash and have form for outing lesbians, potentially having names of complainants and details of their complaints is hugely concerning.
PigeonLittle · 17/11/2021 15:08

I did wonder. Worth taking down.

In addition Mumsnet can retroactively change usernames on posts if needed.

On return AH spoke about “motivation for my engagement in debates - very strong principle on equality for trans people for health & a social basis & engage in public life. Feels passionate about this. Public respect as a Dr. Used platform as felt it was his duty as a campaigner..

.. for the trans community & stands with them. Not allow the ‘opposite side’ to win. I thought at that point in time sending complaints were weaponising to smite me to bring me down. I had a position to defend. Lots more said on how AH stands with the trans community.

GMC - do you have trans friends. AH - more than I can count. Not happy to deny people their humanity. Take umbrage to people who use their platform to deny trans people their right. We live in a pluralistic society, free to own their belief in their heads or in private. My view

… is Twitter is a public platform & has a duty to protect (I think he meant remove?) abhorrent dehumanistic material that impacts on trans people lives who are not afforded the same protection in society. Twitter should not allow views on its platform that are harmful to trans.

Tweeter is like speakers corner. I see it as my right to challenge people’s views & my right to present my opinion. It became my duty to do that. I am not trans but terrible language was challenged. I did get emotionally involved which I regret at this time. I understand as a Dr

BoreOfWhabylon · 17/11/2021 15:19

"Terrible language" like JKR's tweets.

Like "Woman = Adult Human Female"

Gleefully hunting down and harrassing/doxxing women, chortling with his TRA troll buddies.

Ah yes, the noble knight on a glittery unicorn steed, brandishing his rainbow sword of truth and justice to smite his enemies.

BreadInCaptivity · 17/11/2021 15:21

Goodness me....that Vice article!!!!

What on earth was he thinking?

It absolutely smacks of "sorry, not sorry" all at a time when demonstrating that he's learned his lesson is presumably crucial to his case?

Then the disclosure of documentation. It's not explicit that AH provided that material to Vice - but realistically who else would have?

I can't fathom how someone intelligent enough to qualify as a doctor can simultaneously and repeatedly show such poor judgment.

Live now: Sorry this is a break from my thread which I will continue with. On return from the break the GMC have just informed the chair of a news article they have been just made aware of. The hearing has just be adjourned for the GMC to seek further information &

for AH Counsel to speak to him on this matter only; nothing else is allowed to be discussed with his counsel now he has begun to give evidence.

Ah yes, the 'sword of truth' line. The one that played so well for the last high-profile bloke who deployed that tactic. Hmm
