Yep.

This is what we were told today on an 'Inclusion' meeting...by a man
I work in a male-dominated industry and they just said this.

'Women or if you identify as a woman please reach out for menopause advice'

OP posts:
SocialConnection · 18/10/2021 15:09

I've decided to think meant to be inclusive along the lines of 'and trans & non-binary members of the female sex' ... just screwed it all up in the wokery pudding

Artichokeleaves · 18/10/2021 15:13

Is anyone still keeping up with all this? We seem to have entered a world of total confusion where words mean anything and the cupness of infinity is kittennormative and clownfish.

goinggently · 18/10/2021 15:15

Ridiculous. Perhaps pointing out that you have to have menses to pause in the first place to have menopause might make him see how ludicrous this is.

No menses, no pause, surely!!

Ironically this is actually a case where the offensive term "people who bleed" would be more factually accurate Sad

Deliriumoftheendless · 18/10/2021 15:16

@ImUninsultable

I think he was trying to be woke and inclusive but got it wrong. Should have said women and trans men, or like... people who identify as men?

It's like, he knew he had to include trans somehow and knew some trans people will go through menopause and just sort of went for it without thinking, so woman and trans women will so he's right thinking. Just made him look an idiot.

I think it’s probably this.

Or he’s misunderstood what “identifies as a woman” means and maybe thinks that’s what all the she/her in signatures/soc media is all about.

I suspect he has no idea but has seen certain phrases and is using them incorrectly. Which is understandable as most of the rhetoric makes no sense.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 18/10/2021 16:00

I think he was getting confused between transmen and transwomen. I think it is quite common to get them the wrong way round and it contributes to the way some people react to transwomen accessing women's spaces.

I was pleasantly surprised when my own workplace did a menopause event that despite all of the rainbow flags and inclusivity we have had recently the speaker used women/woman throughout but clarified at the beginning that they recognised that transmen, and non-binary females are also affected and although she was going to use women for brevity she was not excluding anyone who would experience menopause but did not identify as a woman.

There were quite a few younger females who put pronouns in their emails present and no one complained although someone did suggest that the working group should look into more inclusive language. It did seem that the issue was understood in terms of it being a female issue.

userchange987 · 18/10/2021 16:28

Oh that's great, maybe they will actually do more research and find more ways to alleviate symptoms then.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 18/10/2021 16:52

No menses, no pause, surely!!

I'm not the only person who has seen crowing tweets where a transwoman announces that they took a workplace entitlement 'period day'. They gleefully reported that the line manager knew; the tweeter knew the line manager knew; and the line manager knew that the tweeter knew that she (the line manager) knew - but equally knew that it wasn't possible to issue a challenge.

I have no doubt that menopause will now be a respectable research topic but I do doubt whether it will be into the experience of boring perimenopausal or menopausal women.

Oh good lord, beam me up. This all feels like end of days

@Zeev

Oh they can have mine.
GrinGrinGrin Seconded!

It's the perfect time to ask about how they cope with passing large blood clots while sitting in an important meeting.

I don't think I would reach out for menopause advice from people who think transwomen can experience menopause. 🤔

LaetitiaASD · 18/10/2021 17:33

@allmywhat

of course it was inevitable, but... bangs head on desk several times

thoughts and prayers, OP, for you and for whoever's providing menopause support for woman-identifiers. I wonder what the support is? I imagine trans menopause is ever so much worse than women's menopause,

There is a lot of effort you have to put in to imagine it, so you're probably right.

Who was the Charity/NGO CEO/Officer who commented favourably that the TW in her Facebook menopause support group were fabulous for fashion tips and their knowledge of how to accessorise? Ayesha Hazarika?

Yes, Hazirika wrote:

NiceGerbil · 18/10/2021 18:08

Men men have already nicked the terms menopause and PND anyway. Ages ago.

Male menopause
And men get PND too

I have no objections with issues men experienced being discussed.

Just use different terms those ones are taken and specific to women.

It's both lazy and arrogant to harvest and adopt words terms etc created for other groups. Esp where the other groups have spent yonks fighting to raise awareness/ get better treatment etc.

Definitely seems like a bloke thing though.

applesandpears33 · 18/10/2021 18:17

It make you wonder if there is there any aspect of being a woman that men will not try to claim?

NotMyCat · 18/10/2021 19:06

From the local ambulance service today
I am DONE. Can women not just have the things that belong to them like periods or do men want all of it?

Men who identify as women can now have the menopause !
NotMyCat · 18/10/2021 19:07

To add, that was part of a FB post about menopause

Well I would like to know what handbag goes with my perimenopausal anxiety 🤔
Fallingirl · 18/10/2021 19:26

Sadly, where I think we will need a lot more menopause awareness, is schools. With more and more girls being put on blockers and testosterone, they themselves and staff need to know how to deal with it.

For a lot of those girls, even their mothers haven’t started menopause, and won’t really know how to support. It should also form part of so-called “informed consent” for the girls themselves, to not only know that they will go through menopause, but also what it involves. I am pretty sure the majority of those girls are ignorant of both.

Stonewall have gone one better - they have INVENTED an 'andropause' i kid thee not.

Stonewall Workplace Equality Index, form for 2021, page 4
1.8 Has the organisation reviewed other policies to ensure they are LGBT inclusive?
Guidance:
• This might include menopause or andropause policies

Ericaequites · 18/10/2021 20:59

Forty years ago, I couldn’t wait to start menstruating. Now, I can’t wait to stop. Transwomen just aren’t equipped for this. It makes me even more anxious and angry.

IMO that's better than nicking menopause!

Male version is very contentious at the mo. Does it exist, what happens, why. Is it a clear enough event to need a name. In terms of identifying it. Given its been accepted with men things just slow down gradually as they age.

Research by all means.

Using menopause (and andropause before defined) implies equivalence/ similarly to menopause. Which is not on as with us it's the 3rd stage of life with huge changes to loads of things about our bodies, can effect MH etc etc.
