Mara Yamauchi marathon runner interviewed at 1.08 about Sarah Everard and women's safety. Keep listening. Brilliant.

Also placemarking to listen tomorrow! Sounds fun.

The Lancet - the favourite comic of the incels and anti-vaxxers.

catzwhiskas · 01/10/2021 23:05

Fantastic to hear Mara spelling it out for him and he just blocked his ears. Listen to women...but no, don’t like what you tell me . Classic.

MajesticWhine · 01/10/2021 23:11

Wonderful Mara.
I don't think it needs to be a toxic issue. I think people say that when they don't feel comfortable to have a discussion. It's only toxic when people use the word transphobia or somehow jump to the idea that trans people's existence is being denied. Or trot out the suicide claims. These are the things that make it toxic.

Cailleach1 · 01/10/2021 23:14

Mara was very good. I couldn't believe NC when he (presuming, don't know his inner soul identity) asked her what could be done and she answered him (again presuming, could be she or they). When Mara stated that single sex spaces protect women, he said the conversation had taken a turn. No it hadn't. This issue just hadn't been prevented or shouted over. It almost seems that women can't be 'allowed' to say anything about this removal of spaces which are free of male born bodies. And where women feel, and are, safer.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 01/10/2021 23:21

Nicky Campbell is a very arrogant man - I've no idea why he ends up hosting so many debate/discussion/interview programmes when he's patently unable and/or unwilling to respect anybody else's viewpoints.

You can see/hear him clearly smirking condescendingly (depending whether on TV or radio) when somebody says something that he disagrees with - and he will often go for a low blow and try to bait the audience into ganging up with him against the person rather than using his words and intelligent, respectful debate.

Maybe he should have just stuck to wheel Of Fortune.

BettyFilous · 01/10/2021 23:28

That was amazing! A brilliant interview and so incisive. Well done Mara. 👏

LindaLooky · 01/10/2021 23:36

Well said that woman!!

He couldn't wait to distance himself from that could he?

PamDenick · 01/10/2021 23:43

Interesting. Well put. I follow ucas online and there is a post on there from a guy who bemoans that his school didn’t let him us3 the girls bathroom (so hateful!) but now his uni does. If he has ANY respect for women, he might consider their discomfort...

PamDenick · 01/10/2021 23:44

NiceGerbil · 01/10/2021 23:56

These people really have put themselves in a pickle haven't they.

NC - 4 daughters. Catcalling leering from young. Terrible. I GET IT.

Single sex spaces. Oh fuck. Fuck fuck fuck.

None of them believe that having all the stuff that was single sex open to anyone on self ID is not a risk for women.

Why so many are so scared of not using the slogans etc they have to, to show support for trans inclusion. They don't mean s word if it. They don't believe it.

Why are so many including our political parties so scared? To the point that they won't even hint at any possibility that any of this might be a teeny bit iffy for women and girls?

TedImgoingmad · 02/10/2021 00:20

NC loves his woke causes, likes to handwring about the poor, oppressed, under-represented minorities. Yet there he still is, 20 odd plus years presenting a plethora of current events programmes (following on from the DJ/gameshow host career). He's sooo concerned, but has he moved over for one of his worthy causes? Nope.

Men like him and JOB don't really give a shit about women. They want to look like they're the good guys, but scratch the surface, and you can see what they really are.

OrangeJuiceAndNoodles · 02/10/2021 00:41

Placemarking to listen in the morning. Sounds ace!

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/10/2021 00:42

Mara was brilliant. What a star. NK - close speech : There are women in both sides of the debate. Idiot. He really is unable to listen.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 02/10/2021 01:10

Just listened to the clip, what a woman. I just loved the way she calmly stayed on course. Go Mara!

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 02/10/2021 07:55

I thought she was amazing. Stuck to her point, refused to be deflected. And as PP have said:
Man: how can women be made safer?
Woman: keep our single sex spaces.
Man: oh, no, losing them is not a problem, only a tiny minority...
Woman: Wayne Cozens also a tiny minority. Still committed murder. A woman is now dead.
Man:

I liked this bit.

"Men should listen to women when they say they feel unsafe"

Nice for NC to provide a live example of what Mara was talking about Hmm

CreepingDeath · 02/10/2021 13:34

Yes exactly, the things that are making it toxic are coming from one side only. But somehow women saying no or disagreeing is being pegged as aggression, and somehow equivalent to the blatant abuse and vitriol from the other side. Ridiculous.
MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 02/10/2021 13:44

'You asked what could be done to keep women safe'

She was excellent

TimeToDateAgain · 02/10/2021 13:46

Morland, 14 March 2021 - I'd never seen this before, it was mentioned in the comments of the Janice Turner piece today.

Tellmesomethinggirl · 02/10/2021 13:47

To be fair to Nicky Campbell he tried to put the experience of his daughters while out jogging and on public transport , across, and he brought up the Lancet page when he didn't have to. So I think he was doing well until he totally lost it when he tried to question the link between wider government policy on safe women's spaces, safety on the streets and Sarah Everard's death and the word "woman" being erased. It was then you could hear him thinking "I am going to get in trouble from upstairs for this" and made sure he inserted "there are women on both sides of the argument" comment and closed the conversation down. So I don't think it is him personally at fault but the Beeb who have obviously come down hard on their presenters. Jane Garvey and Fi Glover referred to this indirectly on their podcast about the "pressure from upstairs" or words to that effect.

Mara was ace! Calm, brave and articulate! Three cheers to her!

That was exceptionally pertinent!

Mara said she felt unsafe when someone was following her when running. Men tweeted that she was wrong.
Nick asked what men could do, Mara said (amongst other things) keep single sex spaces, he questioned it.
Well done Mara (and Nick unintentionally)

KohlaParasanda · 02/10/2021 15:14

I had huge admiration for Mara as an athlete and even more now that I see her in the ranks of the heroic female athletes who have dared to say, "No, this isn't OK."

Mumteedum · 02/10/2021 15:17

@ItsRainingProstateHavers

She was brilliant!!

Man: It’s so awful, what can we do to make women feel safe?
Woman: Well men can listen. We need single sex spaces for women to feel safe.
Man: Yes but you’re worrying about nothing, it’s never going to happen. It’s a different issue.

🙄🙄🙄 straight off the bat dismissed.

Spot on.
groundcontroltomontydon · 02/10/2021 16:47

l remember Mara's spirited speech when she won the NYC half in 2010 (? I was a few places further down the pack ). I think she was a diplomat in a former life - she definitely doesn't need the benefit of NC's panic-mansplaining Hmm
