Mara Yamauchi marathon runner interviewed at 1.08 about Sarah Everard and women's safety. Keep listening. Brilliant.

Mara was so brilliant. Total admiration for her.

Kittii · 02/10/2021 17:49

Very good. Wish I could stay that calm under pressure!

walkinonsunshine · 02/10/2021 18:38

Wonderful Mara!

Thank you!

WomaninBoots · 02/10/2021 20:36

Fucking amazing! What a brilliant woman. Thank you Mara.

Jaysmith71 · 02/10/2021 20:38

But what we all wanted to see was the look on Rachel's face when he handed over at the end of that.

Scoutingformygirls · 02/10/2021 20:45

I was SO impressed at her poise, and her ability to calmly articulate the issue.

He sounded ridiculous quite frankly. Clearly panicking and desperate to shut her up. He was more than happy for her to talk when she was saying what he thought she would and then....

When he emphasised "there are...women...on..both...sides of the debate" I think he was inferring or trying to say/not say that there are 2 different sorts of women...

ScribblingPixie · 02/10/2021 20:53

I don't think he wanted to close her down, he just didn't see the discussion of single sex spaces coming and jabbered the BBC nonsense. He gave her a lot of space to talk and absolutely handed her the opportunity to say that it only takes one predator to end a woman's life when safeguarding doesn't happen.

Doyouthinktheyhearus · 02/10/2021 20:54

I always feel that the “only a tiny proportion would attack” argument is so telling. Sarah was sadly a victim of a man who represents the tiny proportion. The 79 women killed since Sarah died represent a tiny proportion of the population of women. But they are not simply a proportion, or a percentage, or a number, they were sisters, mums daughters and aunties. Just like that we become a statistic. Just like that we become an anecdote. Buts it’s ok because we are just part of the tiny proportion. 1 is too many. Men need to stop.

Kittii · 02/10/2021 21:27

Aren't trans people a tiny percent of the population? 0.6% I think?

Kittii · 02/10/2021 21:27

Funny how the arguments never go both ways.

NiceGerbil · 02/10/2021 21:44

What do you mean kitii?

Kittii · 02/10/2021 21:48

When Mara said that one way to make things safer for women is to keep single sex spaces, Nicky said its only a "tiny proportion" of men who attack women. As in, it doesn't really matter if losing single sex spaces means more women will be attacked because it is only a tiny proportion of men who attack women.

The irony is that 51% of the population are losing their hard-won rights to appease 0.6% of the population who are trans. So the "tiny proportion" argument apparently only works one way.

Scoutingformygirls · 02/10/2021 21:50

I'm guessing they mean that despite being able to dismiss a 'tiny proportion' of threats or a 'tiny proportion' of women falling victim, TRA have no fear of trying to force through laws and changes that only benefit a 'tiny proportion' of the population. Then, that 'tiny proportion' is paramount. When the tiny proportion is dead or harmed women you can can wave it away...

That's my assumption!

NiceGerbil · 02/10/2021 21:51

You mean if women are concerned about VAWG, or even just the things the police do.

In two years the met alone had I think it was over 700 reports of sexual misconduct and/ or assault rape from the public.

They had to close the sapphire unit because of falsified evidence, and altering records, plus other things.

They left Reid and warboys to continue their attacks long after they had all the info they needed to investigate etc. Because they didn't see it as worth their while.

There are multiple reports of officers doing all sorts of things to protect colleagues who commit DV, sex offences etc.

Meanwhile the subtle sex spaces issue is about male people. All of them. They are (were, should still be) single sex because of sex. Gender is irrelevant.

The size of the trans population is irrelevant.

The size of the population that are dodgy/ creepy/ predatory males. Is the correct comparator. And while there are no official figures as very few women or girls report any of it up to and including rape because there's no point.

The majority of women and girls will confirm that in their experience. A large minority of men are not ones you want anywhere near women or girls when vulnerable.

Does that help?

NiceGerbil · 02/10/2021 22:00

Oh sorry misunderstood!

He did the usual.

Women- opening everything up to any male who wants to go with the women in anything that was single sex is dangerous to us.

Answer - But a tiny amount of people are trans! And the most vulnerable much more vulnerable than even the most vulnerable women and girls! And to assume they are all predators is terrible!

Women- oh for fucks sake.

Tellmesomethinggirl · 02/10/2021 22:11

@Kittii

Aren't trans people a tiny percent of the population? 0.6% I think?
Kitti Yes the risks are miniscule but, for women, the stakes are very high, when you consider that if a predatory man enters a female space we are talking about sexual assault, rape or murder. If safe female spaces are open to anyone who identifies as female, potential predation becomes that much harder to police. We are not anti-trans per se, we are against the erosion and blurring of the definition of that which is exclusively female, which women have fought hard over centuries to define, establish and preserve, and are now under attack.
Tellmesomethinggirl · 02/10/2021 22:13

Oh sorry Kitti I misunderstood too!

Exactly! It's funny how the "tiny proportion" argument only works one way!

Doyouthinktheyhearus · 02/10/2021 22:17

He also parroted the standard, “this is such a toxic debate.” Which works as a close down attempt. LISTEN & HEAR the woman who you’ve just asked, “ What can men do to help? ” because she is TELLING YOU NOW.

TimeToDateAgain · 02/10/2021 22:20

He also parroted the standard, “this is such a toxic debate.”

Would that be because one side relies upon myths and emotions and the other side is typically styled as hate groups?

DoesHePlayTheFiddle · 02/10/2021 22:35

Respect to that woman.

And what a snivelling little weasel the interviewer was.

LeafyGreen333 · 02/10/2021 22:53

I've just managed to listen to this now....what does he mean at the end "Well, there are women on both sides of this debate" - so awkward and awful! Mara was fantastic.

KohlaParasanda · 02/10/2021 23:15

I think he may have been pointing out that some women are collaborators openly supportive of the drive to take such protections as we have away from us. Or maybe it was code for, "TWAW, remember to BE KIND."
Kittii · 02/10/2021 23:20

Sorry I should have explained my argument more clearly 😊

ItsRainingProstateOwners · 02/10/2021 23:29

Don’t worry Kittii we have so many posters who just plop things they think are gotchas. At first glance your post seemed like another one of those so others were challenging it.

LeafyGreen333 · 02/10/2021 23:35

@KohlaParasanda Yep - I got the impression it was the second of your explanations. Like he was covering his back and trying to avoid becoming a target for TAs. Which is ironic really, in a conversation about what steps can be taken to prevent women becoming victims of male violence.
