Labour councillor reveals she suffered 'transphobic abuse' at party conference

And where did Patricia Hannah-Wood, a trans woman, suffer this "abuse"?

In the loos, apparently. The women's loos, I assume.

I wonder what the nature of this alleged abuse is? A woman expressing her discomfort with having to share a female-only space with a male-bodied person?

But as we have been told, there is no conflict between women's rights and trans rights, so...

It really sounds like it was just the sight of this sticker www.adulthumanfemale.store/product-page/women-only-sticker. It explains the vague description of 'a sister' instead of having an idea who she was, seen as there were witnesses. The twisted description of Kiera Bell's case by PHW at the end speaks to h** disingenuousness.

Coatandhat · 29/09/2021 23:25

I'm late to this thread and sorry to ask a stupid question but is the transphobic abuse really that sticker? If I encountered Wood in the ladies toilets, it would make me very uncomfortable. I can't get over the tone of aggression and entitlement. The scooter is reminiscent of Yaniv too!

NiceGerbil · 30/09/2021 00:16

No that's just a point about what constitutes transphobic abuse at the moment.

Unless more info has come out, I don't think anyone has any idea what it actually involved.

TinyRebel · 30/09/2021 01:43

@AlfonsoTheDinosaur

I wonder if someone said "this is the ladies' loo" to the councillor in question.
Pretty much, yes. This person frequently went into the women's loos, as if looking to start a confrontation. I believe it was gently pointed out that the mobility scooter (borrowed I assume, as strode in on crutches every day) was in the way and woman suggested use of either the 'for everyone' toilets or the disabled toilets next door instead. Was in the queue behind me inside the cramped loos, kept trying to engage others in conversation. I felt very uncomfortable, didn't know whether to turn round and leave - risking being shouted at - or use the loo and escape as quickly as possible. Came across as a rather aggressive, entitled individual, with a booming male voice. Fond of glaring at anyone giving out feminist signals (i.e. ribbons).

@OhDear2200

Could Labour do anything more to completely implode? The conservatives are not going to have to spend any money on election campaigning as no one is going to vote the joke that the Labour party is.

And I’ve voted Labour since 1997. And until they recognise women’s rights they have lost my vote.

Might as well not vote then (horror!) as the Tories are still worse. Whose left then, who would you trust with your vote?
Whitefire · 30/09/2021 07:12

Tiny thank you for your input, pretty much as suspected then.

cheeseismydownfall · 30/09/2021 07:13

@tinyrebel, it sounds like you were there in person, yes?

Was in the queue behind me.

As ever, the relative shortage of female conveniences even when equal space is allocated because men can 'splash & dash' at the urinal but every woman requires a cubicle.

A transwoman with sisterly feelings might like to ponder that problem.

Mummyoflittledragon · 30/09/2021 10:17

@TinyRebel
So this is a witness account of the reason behind the narcissistic rage? Fgs. Sounds as if it’s all about getting off on “being” a women, validation and making women uncomfortable a plus. Couldn’t possibly used the accessible loos. Quilette article on the subject

In other words, if I said what I thought my post would be reported.

Cailleach1 · 30/09/2021 12:28

Yes, if I honestly stated who I viewed as the aggressor in this instance, I would also be deleted. I would also have hightailed it out of that space as I now apply the 'Be Kind' to women.

As usual, Shakespeare covers most things under the sun. Balthasar in 'Much Ado About Nothing'.

 Sigh no more, ladies, sigh no more,
 Men were deceivers ever,
 One foot in sea and one on shore,
 To one thing constant never.
 Then sigh not so, but let them go,
 And be you blithe and bonny,
 Converting all your sounds of woe
 Into Hey, nonny nonny.
 Sing no more ditties, sing no mo
 Of dumps so dull and heavy.
 The fraud of men was ever so,
 Since summer first was leavy.
 Then sigh not so, but let them go
 And be you blithe and bonny,
 Converting all your sounds of woe
 Into Hey, nonny nonny.There is an old phrase 'men were deceivers, ever"

Cailleach1 · 30/09/2021 12:39

Soz, rogue sentence at the end (not from Shakespeare); "'There is an old phrase 'men were deceivers, ever"

I have read that this piece from Shakespeare could be interpreted as men being perfectly at ease in deceiving women, in order to get their own way in anything.

ArabellaScott · 30/09/2021 13:14

Thanks, Tiny. That's interesting. So the 'abuse' was somebody suggesting Patricia was obstructing the space with a mobility scooter? It doesn't sound even a whisper transphobic or abusive to me.

It sounds like someone doing their absolute damnedest to be awkward, confrontational, provocative and aggressive, in the hope that a woman would walk into the trap of responding in a way that could be painted as transphobic.

It sounds like someone who has issues with women, to be blunt, and is looking for an excuse to vent and rage.

I sincerely hope Patricia will explain further.

@FrankieCH I better re-write that for you as the name Tim for some reason get an instand deletio

So, Frankie said;

Okay so the «horrific transphobic abuse» this person alleges never happened. The person went into the women’s toilets despite there being other sets of toilets for disabled people and more toilets for anyoneelse nearby. This was a staged incursion to allow the person to complain on the conference platform later. One woman quite calmly and politely said they were surprised to see a man in the ladies’ loos. If that’s « abuse» I wonder how the person would describe what happened to Sarah Everard at the hands of a strong, powerful male.

NancyDrawed · 30/09/2021 14:57

And of course the person in question would not want to re-traumatise themself by saying exactly what this transphobic abuse was, so we all have to take their word for it. Convenient, eh?

AlfonsoTheDinosaur · 30/09/2021 15:03

Not only was it "transphobic abuse" it was "horrific transphobic abuse". No hyperbole there, no sir oops, ma'am.

Jaysmith71 · 30/09/2021 15:03

It's starting to resemble the Pakistani blasphemy law, where Person A alleges Person B wrote something horrid on a wall, which Person A immediately rubbed off, beause it was so terrible, and which they could not repeat, because it was so terrible. But Person B must be hanged.

Artichokeleaves · 30/09/2021 15:50

It was certainly convenient timing for the Labour Conference, considering the huge amount of negative publicity so many members have been busily creating.
viques · 30/09/2021 15:52

@Suzysunflower

Gosh I have no words. This is, literally, taking away our voice.

According to which criteria should this person be considered a woman?

The attitude, the aggression, this is somebody who communicates like a male and has been socialised as a male.

I wonder what abuse they would have received if they had gone into a male toilet. I am willing to bet it would have been a lot stronger than

“ Excuse me, this is the ladies”

Jaysmith71 · 30/09/2021 15:55

'Bloke in a frock?' In Brighton?

Nobody would give a fuck.

NiceGerbil · 30/09/2021 17:23

Two different accounts though.

I wish Patricia would report it and/ or any witnessses would speak up.

Are there? I've only really heard the one given above. Patricia's account gave absolutely no information at all.
