AIBU to actually be starting to like the term cis?

Hopefully this is allowed. Not bashing anyone.

I hated the term cis however this morning it hit me that we may be better embracing it if we can't eradicate it.

We have TWAW etc. But in the next however many years, we may find it easier, for example you're on a dating site "cis woman seeking cis man" therefore you will (hopefully) link with genetically male partners. Rather than "seeking a man" and you may possibly end up with a trans man. Again, no judgement or bashing, however I only ever wanted to be with someone who was genetically male, it's just my preference and I should be able to state this in a simple way.

So you would be able to request a man (if happy with cis or trans man) or woman, a cis man/woman and the subsections of lesbian or gay.

Prepared to be told IABU and sure that someone will likely be able to point out why this is bad. I'm not wanting this to be a bashing thread. I'm just starting to think the term may become useful in the not-too-distant future.

Also prepared this may end up deleted.

If you like it for yourself, fine, but - for the dating example - you'd be getting people who view themselves as cis men who also view a cis woman who only wants a cis man fine.

This would be discounting male partners who don't use the trans/cis binary or find cis offputting. It might also put off people who have no idea.

As pp said, I don't think there is a way to get what you want just by using cis, and also the likelihood of getting a trans man partner is I think a bit small to change how you identify yourself.

However will not use the male toilets.

They're largely viewed as unsafe. I mean, a lot of people won't let their little boys to use the men's rooms alone for similar reasons (also, for changing rooms, the ones near me don't have full height cubicals in the men's for some odd reason but has them in the women's).

Anyone who wishes to identify as a woman

Surely nobody can write this and think “yep, that explains what I think a woman is”. You must know you have written something meaningless.

@EdgeOfACoin

What do all 'cis' women and transwomen have in common that they do not have in common with any men or transmen? What are the shared characteristics that unite all 'cis' women and transwomen?

This question has been asked over and over but never been answered.

Until someone can explain what unites all 'cis' women and transwomen under the umbrella of 'women', I will never accept the term 'cis'. I am not a subset of my own biological sex.

^^This! Accepting cus renders the word woman meaningless. How could that possibly be a good thing?

i have no issue with the word Cis, i find the objection to it weird in all honesty.. but then a lot of my friends/social circle are American and its not seen as offensive.

Mumsnet is honestly the ONLY place i know where people find it offensive.

Perhaps Mumsnet is the only place you know where women have given serious thought to the implications?

I am a woman. Anyone who tries to be a woman can specify that themselves. End of.

Nope.

As soon as qualifiers are accepted then transwomen are women and actual (the non-male type) women become “bodies with vaginas”.

Men are still men though

@speakout

Anyone who wishes to identify as a woman. If they were born with male genitalia but feel they are more woman, then all power to them to live their lives as they see happy.

So I could be a person of colour - even though I am white- if that "makes me happy"?

Do you realise that transwomen go through so much heartache because they were born as someone they didn't want to be?

Your comparison isn't valid.

Then you need to get out more, because when I campaigned on the streets of my large, diverse, city around GRA reform proposals, women were most certainly concerned.

No only adult human females are women.

And given the dire state of Women’s rights in America maybe the women so accepting of cis might want to think on that a bit…..

Where the nature of the conversation means a distinction is required (smear tests, for instance), the alternative language can otherwise get very clunky ("non-trans woman" being one of the less appealing, along with "cervix owners", the latter of which seems a little reductionist).

Nah. I've just had my invitation for my smear test (yay) and the NHS booklet is very clear that smear tests are for "women and people with a cervix" There's no need for a qualifier or reductionist language.

I personally have no problem with the "women and..." wording. It's the erasure of the word "woman" or the addition of "cis" that's the issue.

Anonymous forum lead by women happens to be only place women's can talk about women's issues without stigma, abuse and ostrachising shock.

Just people don't voice taboo and conversial subjects in public, doesn't mean they don't have those views.

It just means they might feel unable to express those views.

See women's health generally - not something every womans wants to talk about in the presence of men.

Real women are all cisters.

We should take possession of the Sis word and own it.

Worked for "gay" and "queer".

Transwomen are women

No, transwomen are transwomen. I'm more than happy to treat them as women but, if a qualifier is needed to differentiate, it's that they are transwomen.
