“We’re very aware that sex, of course, is not binary. It’s a continuum. The sectors overlap. And so the solutions are not essentially going to be binary.”

The IOC are pathetic. I don’t even have to listen to their guidelines to know they’ll bottle this one.

Yes. UNWomen will have their way and 'gender recognition' will be the most important thing!

CatsOperatingInGangs · 16/11/2021 17:36

Utterly depressing nonsense being spouted by the IOC. I absolutely despair.

They seem to be ignoring the research from Harper and from Hilton/Lundberg.

This is basically "la la la, too complicated, too divisive, la, la, la let's make it someone else's problem..." Hmm

What the heck is a "gender category"? And they are using "women" as the circular definition of anyone who says they're a woman. Rather than referring to the female sex, and sex categories.

I cannot fathom what "focus on performance" means in terms of practical action that will protect women's sport as categorised by sex.

CatsOperatingInGangs · 16/11/2021 17:55

Just seen this from Sean Ingle. I presume there’ll be a piece in the Guardian from him. How utterly depressing. I have no faith that individual federations will do anything to change the current polices. Why should they? They keep the men happy, the failed male athletes can now join in the womens with no questions asked.
At least World Rugby have done their job and we can be guaranteed there’ll be no males in Womens Olympic rugby.

"Any restrictions arising from eligibility criteria should be based on data collected from a demographic group that is consistent in gender and athletic engagement with the group that the eligibility critieria aim to regulate". and "for the specific sport, discipline and event"

So this is the Semenya approach, as far as I can tell.

Each sport has to individually show that "male athletes who call themselves women" have an advantage at that level of competition in that specific sport.

No cheating and looking at male athletes who don't call themselves women, or in different sports, or at other levels. You have to specifically wait for men calling themselves women in your sport and figure out if they have an advantage or not.

Confused

With the Winter Olympics in Beijing in January it will be interesting to see how Hannah Aram and others do and how BBC Sport report on this.

BettyFilous · 16/11/2021 18:28

What cowardice by the IOC.

Helleofabore · 16/11/2021 18:45

This is as expected then. And yes... it is 'la la la' fingers in ears stuff.

NecessaryScene · 16/11/2021 18:59

If the logic is "calling yourself something" cancels out all assumptions about your biology, what's stopping us calling a horse a man and entering it into a men's event?

They'd have to prove that horses identifying as men have an advantage in that event at that level. They've have to let it run to do the experiment.

So if sporting bodies decide to go with inclusion TW will no longer have to reduce testosterone at all? Or am I reading it wrong?

Signalbox · 16/11/2021 19:25

What amazes me is that with all the court cases we are seeing atm none of them relate to sports.

Signalbox · 16/11/2021 19:30

Emma Hilton’s thread worth a read.

T was always a red herring.

Any male that has been through male puberty has significant physiological advantages over females.

Signalbox · 16/11/2021 19:45

Well, yes it was a massive red herring, but it was also the last obstacle in the way of any man declaring womanhood without having to go through any process at all before competing.

Perhaps this will backfire. The gates are now fully open.

CatsOperatingInGangs · 16/11/2021 20:33

I anticipate a healthy quota of men (not even trans) in womens sport now from unscrupulous nations. It’ll be akin to the obvious doping of female athletes by East Germany and others in the 80s.

NecessaryScene · 16/11/2021 20:41

What amazes me is that with all the court cases we are seeing atm none of them relate to sports.

Sports bodies can to a large extent do what they like. There's not really much legal recourse for anything in sport.

Don't like the rules, you have to appeal to your governing body, or set up your own governing body and try to break away.

There are the cases in the US, where female college athletes are challenging on the education rules regarding sex discrimination in education (Title IX?).

I wonder when an advantage becomes "disproportionate"?
GonadTheGaul · 16/11/2021 21:28

@CatsOperatingInGangs

They seem to be ignoring the research from Harper and from Hilton/Lundberg.
On this slide they might as well just say TWAW. How many female athletes are 'required to modify their hormone levels'? How many healthy female athletes are 'required to undergo medically unnecessary treatments or procedures'?

None.

These are only procedures required of males wishing to compete in the female category. The IOC are using unscientific ideology in producing this rubbish. They really are a bunch of science and reality denying misogynists.

Ekofisk · 16/11/2021 21:32

When is an advantage “proportionate”?
