Picture pretty much says it all. Horrifying that this is allowed.

Just last week an inquest concluded into the tragic death of a female MMA fighter whose family felt the fight was mismatched and this was an actual female opponent.

Allowing males to compete in the female category makes an already dangerous sport so much more dangerous.

If you cheer this on, there’s something wrong with you. There really is.

This. One of those pictures I can't unsee. Probably the one KittenKong is referring to. The throttler looks almost ecstatic. Genderism has opened the maw of fucking hell on all of us.

OvaHere · 11/09/2021 20:07

Link to footage for those that can bear to look.

I also clocked a look of something akin to euphoria at choking this woman.

I agree that anyone defending this is abhorrent and it says nothing good about them.

Yes she agreed to step into the ring but what would happen if she said no thanks?

She might well have been apprehensive that if she'd refused:
– she'd be labelled a transphobe (social death);
– she'd never be offered a bout in a competition again.

KittenKong · 11/09/2021 20:15

I’m not sure if it was a qualifier or competition - she could drop ranking or be fined by refusing too. As well as the transphobia claims and attacks on that basis.

A few female athletes have tried to take a stand. There was a brave female cyclist who spoke out a few years back and received abuse and threats. I think she was sanctioned by a cycling body and maybe lost sponsorship. She was forced to apologise in the end or lose her career and everything she had worked for.

There is no 'choice' or 'consent' for female athletes right now. It's like consenting to something with a gun to your head.

Watched the video twitter.com/thaweasle/status/1436725193485996039?s=21
and my gut feeling is that McLaughlin was holding back. There's just something in the easy coil of the arms, the speedy movements, it's hard to explain.
That thread also points out how Provost looks to ref each time she feels the strength of a blow.
I'm guessing the men she trained with always held back.

Yes that's who I was thinking of thanks.

Not subtle, is it?

MMA is a dangerous sport. Boxing is far more controlled, and the weight categories are very strict, and there are certifications and doctors present etc and boxers have still been killed in the ring.

Whether you agree with these sports or not there's no way a woman should be fighting a man. For all the various reasons detailed elsewhere about strength and muscle mass and bone density and joint strength etc.

But MMA seems to pride itself on its wildness, and as an industry needs to be challenged.

PermanentTemporary · 11/09/2021 20:30

Any of the regular 'omg you're all so narrow-minded' posters want to join us?

Actually I know the answer. If we bring up prisons we're called carceral feminists and told the answer is to abolish prisons, so the answer here will be to ban MMA. As if these things weren't the visible tip of the iceberg of MVAW.

OldCrone that's true!

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 11/09/2021 20:52

@Yamayo

You mean snuff movies. Pitting unmatched opponents is very gladiatorial isn't it? This whole thing cannot end well.
Snuff that was it, I just couldn't get the word. Thank you.

I don't see how the logical outcome can be avoided until the risk outweighs women competitors' fear of what will happen if they refuse to compete .

Is there robust MMA governance in the same way as individual martial arts have it?

I assume that the referees are skilled (I haven't watched the video of the fight) but don't know if venues are encouraged/obliged to have ringside doctors, guidance from neurologists etc.

Interesting to see that this is a foul:

Throat strikes of any kind, and/or grabbing the trachea

I'm not competent to judge the nuance of this v. choking out an opponent.

Here is the victorious person's Twitter, not much support:

OhHolyJesus · 11/09/2021 21:58

Wow, very very little support, I'm surprised.

Barely anything positive at all apart from friends and a fan who met Alana as an 'egg'.

Is Alana too new to the 'community' to have found the hard-core supporters who will defend Alana's 'human right' to compete 'as a woman' which therefore involves choking and beating up women?

Thelnebriati · 11/09/2021 22:19

Does anyone have any doubts now that women are being driven out of the public sphere?

FemaleAndLearning · 11/09/2021 22:32

@ArabellaScott

I think I can't say anything on this matter without being deleted, except to say that as someone who experienced dv this makes my blood run cold.
I'm the same, being choked was a favourite form of abuse from my abuser. This just makes me rage and feel deeply uncomfortable.
Whatiswrongwithmyknee · 11/09/2021 23:02

It saddens me that we have no female sports any more. I also can't understand why we would need sports to be segregated according to 'gender identity'.

ArabellaScott · 11/09/2021 23:14

Flowers Female. I'm so sorry. Hoping you have plenty of support and help to recover.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 11/09/2021 23:19

I wish this to you both.

The harms and traumas of DV are never fully accounted for and so many live wearing the visible and invisible scars of it on their skin and in the reaction to every noise or potential threat.

ArabellaScott · 11/09/2021 23:27

Thanks, Embarrassing. I am totally fine, except when I see things like this, tbh.

I won't link to the photo, because it's too disturbing, but the expression on the face of both the winner and the loser of this fight is telling, and had a visceral impact.
