Guardian article: “ Judith Butler: ‘We need to rethink the category of woman“

See this article in the Guardian:

www.google.ie/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2021/sep/07/judith-butler-interview-gender

One of the questions asked was “ It seems that some within feminist movements are becoming sympathetic to these far-right campaigns. This year’s furore around Wi Spa in Los Angeles saw an online outrage by transphobes followed by bloody protests organised by the Proud Boys. Can we expect this alliance to continue?”.....

We need to rethink the category of 'academic'

Amusing how much some of you are similar to the twitter trans mob, becoming so extreme you block out extremism and absurdities if it fits your purpose. You're trying to pretend you dont know that the far right hates feminism?

Blibbyblobby · 07/09/2021 22:44

@BrozTito

Loads of GC happily went along with that super straight stuff despite it coming from far right misogynists.
You are wrong about who started Super Straight.

Certainly some right wing people enjoyed it for right wing reasons. (Didn't notice it being particularly misogynistic though, certainly not compared to the misogynistic cluster fuck that is a typical TRA pile on).

But many many genuinely (as opposed to "identify as") tolerant, accepting and progressive people enjoyed watching the regressive and authoritarian gender ideology get hoist by its own petard.

So again.

When two very different, indeed usually diametrically opposed groups are saying you are wrong, it does not mean they have suddenly despite all their differences become allies, it means you are so very, very wrong that even groups with nothing else at all in common can see it.

Ah, how convenient. Despite cross posting with BrozTito's last couple of gems, my post utterly fits as a response to both.

BrozTito · 07/09/2021 22:47

Straight western women cool running with fascism. Suprise. The pretence that you ever cared about gay people like me and others was always transparent to us anyway. Oh but you ''enjoy' it though....

I honestly dont think anyone is pretending this

Are you on a different thread?
Waitwhat23 · 07/09/2021 22:51

The superstaight thing appeared to be started on Tiktok by a 16 year old as a joke. Given that the colours chosen for the Superstraight flag were black and orange, colours associated with Grindr and Pornhub, I'm assuming that was also part of the joke. 4Chan seems to have then picked it up and taken it seriously.

Despite this, people did identify with the idea behind it because lesbians (in particular) are being told that they are transphobic for not çonsidering transwomen as sexual partners, that they have a 'genital fetish'. Even an organisation supposed to campaign and fight for their rights has redefined homosexuality as same gender attraction. An organisation set up to support same sex attraction is constantly under attack with constant, insistent calls for its charitable status to be revoked.

I have no doubt that the far right is anti woman. Unfortunately, the far left and most of the rest of the political spectrum also appear to hate women. In Scotland, our 'liberal', 'inclusive' left leaning government is hell bent on destroying women's rights.

I would have described myself as a liberal lefty. Now, I really don't know where I stand.

Make no mistake. The left hates women. They just couch it in 'inclusive' rhetoric.

Oh dear. I see what happened here. You only know about Super Straight.

You missed Super Gay and Super Lesbian didn't you? That's a bit embarrassing for you.

And a real shame, because that was the good bit.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 07/09/2021 22:55

It was originally a 16 year old that came up with it

And his MOTHER received death threats

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 07/09/2021 22:55

You do realise that quite a number of women on here are in fact gay?
RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 07/09/2021 23:12

Right ive got to go to bed

But if you could see your way to showing me the bit where posters have said they want to destroy gay people and where they said they enjoyed the super straight bit id be grateful

Thanks broz

The social media narrative built about the origins of SuperStraight is as fake as the social media narrative built about the Wi Spa sex offences.

@Waitwhat23
have you got any comments about the Wi Spa incident? The ones GC feminists allegedly made up. The one that TRA's defended, saying that small girls shouldn't look at exposed penises? When it turned out it was in fact a sex offenders taking advantage of self ID and the chilling effect.

GC feminists aren't the ones defending men's right to expose their penis to young children

What slightly confuses me about this incident is that apparently no one would have had any problem with this person being naked in the men’s part of the spa, where they would have been presumably similarly exposing their genitals to small children. Personally I’m not sure it’s appropriate for anyone to be getting their genitals out in front of other people’s children.

Waitwhat23 · 07/09/2021 23:26

From the Twitter thread showing the bits conveniently cut from the article, given the truth having come out about the Wi Spa incident (I.e. sex offender taking advantage of self ID and the chilling effect) -

'Unfortunately we are living in anti-intellectual times'

Says the science denier. The cognitive dissonance is jaw dropping.

in this context, 'we' feels like an example of forced teaming.

Waitwhat23 · 07/09/2021 23:41

@Helen8220 and I can't quite understand how you don't seem to see the difference between a single sex space, where there is an expectation that there may be nudity and where people have gone into that space with that knowledge and understanding and a space which is meant to be single sex space but someone of the opposite sex is in there naked. You can't possibly be that disingenuous.

I have been to many swimming pool changing rooms where women and girls have walked around half dressed or naked in a single sex space. I have been to a spa in Turkey where nudity was mandatory in a single sex space. In both spaces, the women and girls using that space were using it with the understanding there was likely to be nudity in that single sex space. This would be the same for the male area of both places I mention. The men and boys using that space would use it with the understanding it was a single sex space where there was likely to be nudity.

If someone comes into a single sex space, for women and girls, who has a penis, it is no longer a single sex space. The women and girls using that space did not consent to that change of use. They used it believing it was a single sex space.

About that redefining of words thing, the first UK trans minister (holy type, not government) says that, er, ahem, 'homosexuality doesn't really exist'

Helen8220 · 07/09/2021 23:49

@Waitwhat23 I know that we disagree about the broader arguments about single sex spaces, but my point is, if we’re saying that people who get sexual kicks from exposing their penises to young children should not be allowed to expose their penises to young children, shouldn’t boys have that protection just as much as girls?
