This hashtag is now trending on Twitter…

I watched the Staff Outing episode of the IT crowd last night, where Roy identifies as disabled. I was so so funny. The man is a genius. #istandwithglinner

PaleGreenGhost · 21/08/2021 08:06

That episode nearly killed me when I first watched it. The only time I've laughed so hard I didn't have space to breathe in between.

Abhannmor · 21/08/2021 09:24

Fr.Ted. Black Books . The IT Crowd. Count Arthur Strong. Best comic writer of his generation and hounded out of work by hypocrites, cowards and unhinged fanatics. I stand with Glinner.

Scout2016 · 21/08/2021 09:26

Has something happened to initiate this? Something new thst is, or is it a welcome show of support for previous crap he has been subjected to?

PermanentTemporary · 21/08/2021 09:27

He's a proper jester. The one who says the stuff that nobody else is allowed to, the stuff that needs saying. I frequently disagree with the way he does things, he's confrontational and pushes things 'too far'. Doesn't matter. Maybe it took someone screaming for people to stop pretending they couldn't hear anything.

PermanentTemporary · 21/08/2021 09:29

Oh and obviously I love his work. There is still nothing like Father Ted. What I notice now is how kind it is, how warm and how much it pokes fun at institutions while allowing individuals to be themselves.

AlfonsoTheMango · 21/08/2021 09:31

I do, too. The man is courageous and clever.

FightingtheFoo · 21/08/2021 09:42

I love Glinner - was a huge fan of his work long before I knew who he was.

Will forever be grateful to him for the stand he has taken on this issue at great personal and professional expense.

And guess what? I absolutely deplore some of his other views on another (completely different) topic he speaks fairly frequently about (not mentioning it here as I don't want to derail the thread).

Funny how that works right. It's almost like book burning doesn't have to be your first port of call when you disagree with someone!

"Fr.Ted. Black Books . The IT Crowd. Count Arthur Strong."

And producer of Motherland who hired female writers for it.

BraveBananaBadge · 21/08/2021 09:51

It was nice to see the hashtag, I had a quick look and it hadn't even appeared to be hijacked or led to pile ons (assume I'm being naive there though).

ArtemesiaK · 21/08/2021 09:58

They're the only comedies I can watch over and over again and still find them so funny (don't do Twitter, though, so can't tell him). Such a good man...

ChipButties · 21/08/2021 10:10

Black Books is one of my favourite series. Father Ted too. His work is definitely ‘warm’ he pokes fun at nothing and everything, it’s inoffensive.

I don’t really understand what has happened, I have seen him here and on Twitter over the years but it always seem to b win the middle of what has happened. Can anyone just round it up for me? I know it’s about his support for women etc, but I don’t understand exactly. Apparently he was abusive on Twitter so got banned?

Zeev · 21/08/2021 10:25

Apparently he was abusive on Twitter so got banned?

And meanwhile the Taleban get to keep their twitter accounts..

That is the favourite comedy episode among my family, and the one we turn to when we all need cheering-up.

The moment Jen turns to the bar and sees Moss is the best moment.

Lineham and his fellow co-writers have nearly killed me a few times, when I've been rendered nearly unconscious laughing.

The second favourite is Kevin Eldon's brief appearance as the French/Belgium IT technician on the phone to Jen in the 'Bad Boys' episode.

'Genius' is often overused, but Lineham's writing frequently strays into that territory for real.

Wouldn’t need to say it if people didn’t try and take women’s rights away - Glinner you are fucking awesome and do us proud ❤️

Sexnotgender · 21/08/2021 18:06

He doesn’t have to stand with us. It would be so much fucking easier for him if he threw women under the bus like most blokes. He doesn’t.

Just read a ridiculous thread on Reddit about 'anti - trans' trending tags. They concluded that it's algorithm manipulation rather than, you know, people actually having an opinion they disagree with. Unfortunately for them, the general public are finally waking up.

#istandwithglinner

GNCQ · 21/08/2021 22:00

How do you keep something trending?
Do you just "like" all of the Tweets or do you need to actually retweet them?

PermanentTemporary · 21/08/2021 22:02

Glinner's ban from Twitter was for saying a man wasn't a woman, I think?

GNCQ · 21/08/2021 22:06

Nevermind. I've looked down the "trending" list and it's clearly not there anymore. It's all bullshit about LilMix new album or something sponsored by EE or Liverpool football club, I mean who on earth tweets about this rubbish.
I came off it ages ago and now I remember why.

PatsArrow · 21/08/2021 23:48

It trended for nearly 2 days.

Glinner was banned from Twitter for saying "Men aren't women though". Unbelievable really.

I don't think this hashtag means anything new/big has happened to him recently. I know he's made a huge connection with The Scottish Witches and Marion Millar tweeted Twitter support to ask for Glinner to be reinstated. I think it might have come from that?

Whatever the reason it's really great to see it. Also even greater that the abusive tweets have gained very little traction.

So bog off somewhere else, then.
