As soon as everyone saw the "It's not terrorism" reassurance last night wrt to the wretched events in Portsmouth - how many of us knew that the media would report a story about a young man with history of anger about lacking sexual experience with women?

[X] 23, a bodybuilder who appears obsessed with not being attractive to women and being without a girlfriend, has been named by people in the Devon naval city as the gunman with a five-year-old girl and several relatives feared to be among his victims.

I won't use X's name.

@Sobeyondthehills

To me, when they use the term "It's not terrorism" They mean he is white
100% this. "It's no terror related" was being bandied about when not a single other detail had been released, so they can only have been going on the colour of his skin. And they can't actually possibly have had time to rule out alt right/white supremacist terrorism.
Tabbly · 13/08/2021 13:45

Absolutely, I agree with this.

LouHotel · 13/08/2021 13:45

This is my city so my social media is awash with images and people in despair. Plymouth has a town mentality you tend to know everyone by only a couple degrees of separation.

''Their were 6 victims' brigade are out in force already blaming his poor mental health and being let down by the system. Its making me so angry. His entitlement led to him killing those poor people in broad daylight, this is a hate crime.

Stevie6 · 13/08/2021 13:46

The whole city is broken right now, people dead and people still being treated in hospital, the argument of that what label it needs doesn't really matter right now

Stevie6 · 13/08/2021 13:48

@LouHotel so many stories and theories being thrown around isn't there, until it's released officially nobody knows the truth

Every woman in the UK and in fact, the world lives in fear of men and their violence. I walked past three teenage boys yesterday. They were walking their dogs and chatting, but I still had to take a moment to wonder if I would be safe to interact with them.

Please do not take it upon yourself to speak for "every woman in the world". I walk past teenage boys, and men, every day of my life and don't ever have to take a moment to wonder if I would be safe! Typical of the hyperbole on these threads.

I don't think there is hyperbole - can you point it out please? And actually considering the subject in the OP ..,

Whilst I go about my daily activities happily and would absolutely encourage DD to do the same I realise my freedoms to do this are restricted compared to say, DH. I was sexually assaulted twice before I was 16 by men so I'm pretty sure of that.

I also know that, god forbid the minuscule chance my own life or that of any women I know is ended prematurely and deliberately by another human being, I'm 99.9 % sure it will be by a man. And it will happen violently.

I'm not the OP, but the hyperbole is here:
Every woman in the UK and in fact, the world lives in fear of men and their violence.

SheABitSpicyToday · 13/08/2021 14:00

This happened a few minutes away from me.
He wasn’t targeting anyone specifically, just shooting people he came across. The little girl was 3 years old Sad

Miniestelle · 13/08/2021 14:08

The definition of terrorism :The unlawful use of violence or threats to intimidate or coerce a civilian population or government, with the goal of furthering political, social, or ideological objectives.

The suspect aligned with Incel ideology which in turn aligns with far right Trump supporters. From seeing his YouTube rants and political posts, my personal view is that this attack should should not be written off as a hideous domestic tragedy, their are certainly elements to it that align this with anact of terrorism. Furthermore, I think it's time now for a proper high level investigation globally into the affects that social media, the dark web, conspiracy theories, far right and misogynistic ideologies are having on predominately white young men. It is a serious problem now and these attacks have happened one too many times now.

terfinginthevoid · 13/08/2021 14:10

If there is a wider issue here, it is why he was allowed a gun. Apparently the police were on the scene within minutes - there is no way he could have killed so many people in such a short time without a gun.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 13/08/2021 14:21

Muriel I interpreted that slightly differently, as in it's the thing that frightens me most but doesn't limit my activity. I guess for many women it doesn't register and I'm glad for them. Other women will be extremely frightened possibly having experienced violence so will feel their freedoms are very limited.

Regardless, what's happened is truly awful. Love to MNers who are local Thanks

It's not terrorism, it's menorism

ScreamingMeMe · 13/08/2021 17:06

It takes a special kind of evil to shoot a 3 year old Sad

LazyViper · 13/08/2021 17:10

It’s just been announced that one of the women he killed was his mother.

Gingercake2018 · 13/08/2021 17:11

How has someone with his internet history got a gun licence? It took journalists minutes from the release of his name to dig up the details of his internet life, why are the gun license agency not making this effort. It a disgusting level of negligence.

PlanDeRaccordement · 13/08/2021 17:12

Men kill other men at 3x the rate they kill women, so it would be hard to say there is a radicalisation misogyny problem when 74% of murder victims are actually men, not women.

Tuscancat · 13/08/2021 17:22

It was terrorism against women by an incel. It is designed to terrify women and girls into giving nasty misogynistic men sex to pacify their entitlement. Our porn soaked objectifying culture which normalises vawg does not help either.
It should be a hate crime too.

Tuscancat · 13/08/2021 17:23

I agree. From what I've seen online he doesn't come across as the sharpest tool in shed. Fair game to be easily manipulated and drawn in to the incel ideology. I don't actually think incel is a new thing. It's just because we now have the internet that these misogynistic views can come together into an incel ideology. It's always been festering. It needs stopping. The ideology needs to be recognised as potential terrorism.

Ok, so you’d agree men are the problem then? (Awaits WDIT……)

So messed up.

I want to cry looking at the photo of the little girl and her dad. They looked so happy.

Indeed. The Country Life ppl will be along shortly to explain why we are all wrong.
theThreeofWeevils · 13/08/2021 17:46

Equally, it is incontrovertible that women kill men, women or children at a fraction of the rate men do. It's a man problem, of which misogyny is one of the drivers.

It's reporting that she was adopted. I have to feel for the biological parents who will most likely be seeing her picture, whilst they my have been totally unsuitable and safe to parent her, it is likely to be unimaginably heartbreaking for them and their extended family.

It's just layer upon layer of tragedy isn't it?
