Really looking forward to Robert Webb on Strictly.
Unfortunately TRAs are already frothing and apparently writing to the bbc,

Really? FGS

SequinsandStiIettos · 07/08/2021 02:18

Glitterball Won't affect the vote.
Whether they are moaning about him dressing as Jennifer Beals in his Comic Relief routine 12 years ago (in which case they have a lot of ground to cover, as many comedians performed in drag for that show, same as lip sync battle) or because he retweeted articles against transition of kids and stuck his neck on the line for a while by criticising Mermaids, I can guarantee the average voter won't have any fucks to give.
They will care about whether he can dance, is trying to improve and whether he is funny.
The booker/Beeb will be aware of any backlash and ignore it. It's not like it's Celebrity Big Brother, whereby they'd stick him in a room with Paris Lees and hope for fireworks. Hopefully, someone's on twitter duty for him and he has a decent experience. I think (sorry Rob) he's only doing it for the money - cannot blame him in this financial climate, but suspect he wouldn't actually mind going out earlier so he can get on with his next novel but with a Strictly financial cushion.

xxyzz · 07/08/2021 03:23

Wasn't he very ill not that long ago?

Hope Strictly is not too gruelling physically for him.

He seemed by far the best known person on the line up though so could well be very popular and do well.

oscarandelliesdad · 07/08/2021 06:16

Oh pleased to hear he is on Strictly this year. Really like Robert Webb and appreciated his head above the parapet moment. Has David Mitchell ever had anything to say that would put him in the during line or is he keeping shtum?

oscarandelliesdad · 07/08/2021 06:17

Sorry, fat thumbs. I meant the tra firing line.

Tabasco007 · 07/08/2021 06:24

God they really are relentless awful people aren't they!

nauticant · 07/08/2021 07:35

Yes, here's a long piece in The Times about it:

He was a hero of mine long before sharing an article criticising a well known children's experimental medicalisation org.

It was great on the podcast when said he didn't want to talk about the gender identity cult, the presenter then informed him he and his family were in said cult and pressed him to beg for absolution. Webb didn't play along and hence the hate.

Still won't watch strictly though..

Clymene · 07/08/2021 08:13

Robert Webb is a very decent man. The TRAs can bugger off

KevinBaconsJeans · 07/08/2021 08:17

Big Peep Show fan here, but I cannot bring myself to watch strictly, even for Robert. I do recommend his book though, How Not to be a Boy. He reads the audio version himself.

@McPancreas I listened to that, it was disgraceful. Emotional manipulation and guilt tripping and a total left-turn from the conversation they were having about Robert's health scare.

This. He's also a pretty good dancer. I think hellbe pretty popular.

I think this may be one of those "twitter isn't real life" moments.

ScreamingMeMe · 07/08/2021 08:19

*he'll be

Hmm
OldTurtleNewShell · 07/08/2021 09:45

What a weird thing for them to object to. How on earth does a comedian and writer appearing on Strictly have any bearing on trans people or their lives?
It doesn't. It makes no difference at all. That means that this is pure vindictiveness because they don't like that Webb's been opposing sexual stereotyping for years and hasn't been afraid to say so.
I've never watched Strictly but perhaps I'll start.

aliasundercover · 07/08/2021 09:56

I don't believe Mitchell has ever taken part in this debate. You won't be surprised to learn that this is evidence of transphobia: twitter.com/notCursedE/status/1423642339499724803?s=20

Always remember - nothing except complete obeisance is acceptable.

Logic really doesn't come in to it. They must destroy all disbelievers, then they can live in their perfect utopia. Or something.
GrimDamnFanjo · 07/08/2021 10:11

There's even posters whining on Digital Spy...
I hope they do make a massive fuss because it would be an opportunity for the public to hear the issues.
Robert if you are reading this, thanks for being one of the few men who've spoken up against gender stereotypes.

He is a wonderful dancer, I really look forward to seeing him compete. Underneath the (very successful) attempt to be funny in this clip is huge natural ability

LMNybjy744 · 07/08/2021 11:06

That dance video is brilliant- his facial expressions!

SprayedWithDettol · 07/08/2021 11:11

I’ve haven’t ever watched strictly, but I think based on this - he is a dead very to win.

🤞

SprayedWithDettol · 07/08/2021 11:12

Cert not very ffs.

LemonViolet · 07/08/2021 11:19

His flash dance was amazeballs!!! He’ll be great on strictly.

There’s plenty of people whose philosophy or politics I don’t agree with and I don’t campaign for them to not be on telly. Ridiculousness!

SiobhanSharpe · 07/08/2021 11:21

I like Robert Webb a lot -- actor, comedian, author and dancer.
(And who can forget his role, totally naked, with Olivia Coleman in "Confetti". That took some, er, chops. 😊)
I wish him all the very best in Strictly.

Notagain20 · 07/08/2021 11:25

I absolutely loved his memoir, I learned such a lot from it about masculinity and he's a fabulous writer. And what a mover! And the balls to speak up. What a guy.

MorrisZapp · 07/08/2021 11:25

He's a proper dancer and a proper diva. Expect fireworks! He's cheerfully gender non conforming so of course they hate him. Hope he bloody wins.

cariadlet · 07/08/2021 11:43

@McPancreas which podcast was that?
