Really looking forward to Robert Webb on Strictly.
Unfortunately TRAs are already frothing and apparently writing to the bbc,

I've just listened to the podcast and it has made me so angry.

The podcast host seems to be a writer and the podcast advertises itself as having conversations with interesting "creators". Robert Webb and David Mitchell had clearly agreed to appear to discuss their writing and acting partnerships. Most of the podcast focused on that, it was really interesting and they both came across very well.

There was a brief digression about RW's health scare which was irrelevant to the show but harmless.

Then the host totally ambushed RW by asking about his retweeting of the critisism of Mermaids which he was completely unprepared for. It was totally unfair when that is clearly not the premise of the show.

Then the host revealed his agenda by saying that he had a couple of non binary kids, one of whom identifies as trans and came out when they were at kindergarten. KINDERGARTEN for FFS. Kids that age will spend the morning convinced that they're Spiderman and the afternoon telling everyone that they're going to be a dog when they grow up.

He finishes the show by giving details of "supportive" gender affirming organisations. He obviously went down the gender affirming route with his own kids, effectively pushing them down the trans route.
You can hear it here, the inquisition starts about 9 minutes from the end.

What an asshole that guy is. We're really living in an age of witch-hunts when something you tweeted is brought up years later in an interview, and then the emotional blackmail - never an actual argument - that this dude's child 'came out' in Kindergarten. Well no, most people don't believe in this shit, for a start you can't actually become the opposite sex, if you have a gender non-conforming child, support them in that. These people are so rigid in their views of gender that they can't contemplate letting a child be in their own gender non-conforming way. It's no surprise to me that this ideology is pushed so hard in America, where they are obsessed with identity - racial, economic, political, religious denomination, social class, gender identity, ancestry, pro or anti gun etc. As a newer country they lack common roots and latch on to all these identities to define themselves, often attempting to be subversive whilst only adhering to a type. Like teenagers that never grow out of their faddy way of identifying themselves to be self-aggrandizing. The UK has changed due to the influence of US culture over the past 20 years. I lived there 20 years ago and what struck me was how much more self-important Americans were as a whole, coupled with an acute self-consciousness of their place in society and how the groups they belonged to signalled this. I actually love many things about America and Americans, but some days these tendencies all got too much and made me homesick: they don't half talk a lot of shit. I wish the rest of the world would consider for just one second what a f*cking mess American society is and that perhaps importing their latest ideological trends isn't in our best interests.

I'm wondering whether to place a bet on him winning.
I think he's going to do really well.
He is a wonderful dancer, I really look forward to seeing him compete. Underneath the (very successful) attempt to be funny in this clip is huge natural ability
Thank you for posting this link! I remember watching this on the tv when it was first on, during Comic Relief, and thinking he was so good. In fact every time I hear the song on the radio it reminds me of his dance routine.

It'd funny because his character on Peep Show made me think of him as... a bit of a prat. But everything I've heard him talk about recently, especially his memoir, makes him sound like such a thoughtful, nuanced person. And yes, wonderfully not chained to gender stereotypes, despite some incredibly unsupportive adults in his early life.

I hope he has a great time on Strictly. I don't usually watch it, but might look for his dances on it.

Comment under the YT vid says “If he doesn’t revive this for movie week on Strictly I’m going to be very disappointed”. I agree!!!

😂 Might have to actually start watching SCD just to vote for him! GC DDs love him also, but for LDFCR and Peep Show, rather than his GC views - though that certainly doesn’t count against him.
Siablue · 07/08/2021 21:58

I live Robert Webb. He is a fabulous dancer and very funny. He could win it. I know he has been very ill so he might not be as fit as he was in the flash dance video but he will do well.

theskyispink · 08/08/2021 12:53

@GrimDamnFanjo

There's even posters whining on Digital Spy... I hope they do make a massive fuss because it would be an opportunity for the public to hear the issues. Robert if you are reading this, thanks for being one of the few men who've spoken up against gender stereotypes.
DS is a mess. It's kicked out anyone who dares to express GC sentiments so all that's left are woke witch hunters. Chilling effect in action. I was a poster there for years but no more.
highame · 08/08/2021 14:50

Will definitely make an exception and tune in and vote. If the general public get wind that he's been given a hard time, he will garner even more votes ❤

DisgustedofManchester · 08/08/2021 15:16

If any TRAs didn't know Webb was a suspected Gender Conservative, appearing here on these threads will cement the idea for them. I've never known anyone support someone who hasn't expressed and anti trans opinion here, sort of why Mumsnet has the reputation it has unfortunately.

MoreRainThanAnyYet · 08/08/2021 15:35

Yes you have. Don't be silly.

Go and read ANY MN thread supporting parents with infant feeding, school angst, relationship issues, money worries, kitten naming, house repairs, even finding small-size workboots.

Bet you find plenty of support for people who have expressed no interest at all in transgender people, let alone 'antitrans opinion'.

FloralBunting · 08/08/2021 15:42

Webb criticised the gendered stereoptypes that would lead a GNC child down a route of needless medical and surgical intervention as promoted by the Mermaids lobby group.

He's not anti-trans, he's anti gendered stereotypes. And I am very happy to support him.

OldTurtleNewShell · 08/08/2021 15:45

Good grief. The man wrote an entire book about being a gender non-conforming boy, and opposing gender stereotypes.
Anyone thinking he is a 'gender conservative' has clearly not read a word he's written and is simply putting words in his mouth and condemning him for them. What a pile of nonsense.
One day, I'd like a TRA to actually have the integrity to address what people have actually said instead of making up shit and claiming that perfectly ordinary comments are 'dog whistles' in absence of any actual proof.
But then, of course, it would be made clear just how shaky and unfounded all these accusations actually are.

Fleek · 08/08/2021 15:55

Gender conservative?

Because what? You think we support rigid ideas that boys must play football and girls should always wear pink around here?

Yes, that sums up our position exactly.

Dozer · 08/08/2021 15:58

His memoir was v good, including on his father, sexuality, ‘toxic masculinity’ and his failings as a partner / father.

Dozer · 08/08/2021 15:58

And yes, arguing against stereotyping.

MonsignorMirth · 08/08/2021 16:20

He comes across as very thoughtful and funny. I really should read his book.

ShortBacknSides · 08/08/2021 16:44

I am already hoping the Robert Webb wins Striclty!

DaisiesandButtercups · 08/08/2021 16:48

I listened to the audio book version, read by the author, it was brilliant!

I started listening to it this afternoon and I’m already about half way through. It’s so, so good.
Natsku · 08/08/2021 17:21

Don't watch Strictly but might for him. I loved his memoir, also his novel Come Again, that was really good.

Novelusername · 08/08/2021 17:28

"gender conservative" - Robert Webb?! I feel embarrassed for you!

MidsomerMurmurs · 08/08/2021 17:44

@DisgustedofManchester a suspected Gender Conservative

I mean, for goodness’ sake. Confused This is the level of misunderstanding that our woke-scolding visitors have?

For what it’s worth, if you’re looking for “gender conservative” views, you might start by asking who talks about GI Joes and Barbie Dolls, who is so driven to enforce rigid gender stereotypes that they think girls who like to play with “boys’ toys” (Angry) are actually boys, and need hormones and surgery. It isn’t people like Robert Webb. And his novel Come Again was bonkers but great fun.

cariadlet · 08/08/2021 17:57

I just checked Audible and found out that How Not to be a Boy (full, unabridged, read by RW) is included free in my membership! Downloading it now.

NeedToKnow101 · 08/08/2021 18:03

Love him! Will be rooting for him on Strictly and this has reminded me to get his books, especially his memoir ❤️
