It is interesting to see what gets quoted and context is everything! I will always refer to Hubbard as a he as he is a male cheat in a female sport. He doesn't deserve my respect. I accept that some people will use someone's preferred pronouns and I would in certain cases but I will not be compelled to use them for Hubbard.Flowers

You are correctly sexing the person and a belief in sex being immutable and unchangeable is a protected belief in UK Law.

www.stuff.co.nz/sport/olympics/125946144/tokyo-olympics-weightlifter-laurel-hubbard-in-quick-exit-after-three-misses

Film of the lifts in this article, if anyone else missed them.

I imagine a common reaction to having crashed out in the early stages of the Olympics, at way lower than your recent personal best, having spent years of blood, sweat and tears training, would be devastation. Especially if you were of an age to know this was your last and only chance. Hubbard’s reaction is interesting.

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 02/08/2021 22:30

I thought that too. I think anyone else would be gutted. But I think they bottled it. Pressure and attention was too much. I've never actually heard Laurel speak before and feel quite sorry for them. The rules were there to be exploited and they didn't break them.

HopeClearwater · 03/08/2021 00:45

Believe they lost on purpose. There is no way they got to the olympics and performed so poorly. It’s a game and a show and they have won.

It certainly looked that way didn’t it, and Hubbard didn’t seem bothered in the least.

ScreamingMeMe · 03/08/2021 07:01

Oh no, the stuff I write on a public forum to be read by people will be read by more people.

The shame.

There is zero interaction on most of their tweets - the most any of them have got is one like. I don't think you're going to be famous any time soon Grin

Very disingenuous interpretation of one of littlbrowndog's posts there, too.

FloralBunting · 03/08/2021 07:56

That Twitter account is hilarious. Spends all their time trawling FWR and then posts zingy highlights on Twitter and just adds whiny traaaansphobiaaaaa comments to each screenshot? Excellent promo account for us. Do keep it up. I hereby give anyone carte blanche to screenshot any of posts and give them a boost on Twitter. Stand by every word or I wouldn't have put it on a public forum.🙄🤣

Wrt Hubbard - the duper's delight reaction was sickening, tbh, and so revealing that the only comeback TRAs seemed to have to pointing it out was another weightlifter losing and then dancing away, as though it proved it was a perfectly normal reaction.

Throwing it was the most useful strategic move. It defangs the most glaring advantage aspect, it plays the most vulnerable card, and they get to blame the nasty women for causing it with all the scrutiny.

Really? You honesty believe Hubbard went to the Olympics not to win, but just as part of some TRA conspiracy?

That is rather laughable. I think all athletes who go the Olympics wish to do their best, as they train so hard to be there.

What is really interesting is the Chinese woman who won by outlifting the others by 15k plus. Now that will be hard to beat. Good on her.

FindTheTruth · 03/08/2021 09:51

@Feelingoktoday

Hubbard achieved what Hubbard wanted. A place at the olympics. It wasn’t about winning it was about acceptance and breaking barriers. Now the barrier has been broken it will happen again and again. BMX, cycling, rowing, running. This time they will win. Believe they lost on purpose. There is no way they got to the olympics and performed so poorly. It’s a game and a show and they have won.
Yes and LH timed it perfectly for the IOC's new rules due in 2 months time which will focus on a 'sweet spot' instead of fair play.

More interesting that she won with a combined total of 320 kg in the 87kg + class, while the winner of the gold medal in the 81 kg men's class had a total of 374 kg.

Go up to the men's 91kg class and the winner has a total of 401 kg. Of course you can't go up another class in the women's competition because everyone over 87kg competes together.

merrymouse · 03/08/2021 10:12

Good luck with finding the 'sweet spot' that includes non binary people and trans men and doesn't make a mockery of classification, but that doesn't classify by sex.

NotBadConsidering · 03/08/2021 10:26

To paraphrase Emma Hilton from Twitter, this result just demonstrates the male physical advantage more than ever. Despite poor technique and strategy, a male can still qualify for the Olympics because the strength allows you to overcome those inadequacies. A woman with skills that poor wouldn’t get a look in. Remember Hubbard’s elbow injury was a result of attempting the Commonwealth record even though Hubbard was leading snd didn’t need to lift that much to win gold.

FloralBunting · 03/08/2021 11:58

Mishy, is the Twitter account you? Don't be shy, you might pick up some followers.🤣

I agree
That's what makes it so unusual that Hubbard was so mediocre.

I mean you could almost understand it if she was from a tiny country with no weightlifters to choose from but she's from NZ. They have plenty of good weightlifters

If she was there purely to raise the profile of transwomen then that's utterly shit and takes the piss out of sport altogether

yourhairiswinterfire · 03/08/2021 12:08

Wasn't there a thing on Reddit where a group decided to repost all the stuff from r/GenderCritical?

There's a subreddit dedicated to this. Since they got the GenderCritical sub banned, they just trawl Ovarit, Mumsnet, Spinster, Twitter looking for people, mainly women, to screenshot and slag off.

Quite sad really, but whatever floats your boat I guess 🤷

AnyOldPrion · 03/08/2021 12:16

another weightlifter losing and then dancing away

Do you know which, Floral? Was it someone considered to be a serious contender for a place, or someone who qualified and was happy to be there, but knew she had no serious chance of a medal?

It was a man, from Kiribati.

Honestly, I swear some TRAs think Olympians do it solely for participation certificates like it's a school sports day.
