2 Teachers in the US fired for speaking out about gender identity

More bullsh!t from the US. I just wanted to post this as another response to 'that will never happen'. Women are losing their jobs for this.

The article is from the brilliant 4W feminist site about 2 teachers in the US who were fired because they started a campaign to keep school toilets single sex.

4w.pub/two-oregon-educators-fired-after-speaking-out-about-gender-identity-policies/

North Middle School Assistant Principal, Rachel Damiano, and 7th-grade science teacher, Katie Medart, were fired at a public hearing of the Grants Pass 7 school district in Oregon on Thursday. The two women were each terminated by a 4-3 vote of the board after hours of statements, questioning, and debate.

Rachel and Katie were accused of using school district time or resources in the creation or promotion of “I Resolve,” a grassroots movement founded by the two educators which proposes “solutions for education policies” to address the conflict of rights arising from new “gender identity” laws and policies impacting schools in Oregon and across the country. In March, the two posted a video on Youtube describing their proposal, which includes separating school bathrooms by physical anatomy.

If anyone in the US wants to support them, they founded a movement called I Resolve www.iresolvemovement.com/ in an effort to find reasonable solutions to the mess that's going on over there, mainly focusing on education.

The website is pretty new, so there's not much on there but you can support them by buying t-shirts.

I saw this. Terrifying. Especially as I am a teacher who speaks out against gender ideology.

littlbrowndog · 19/07/2021 20:14

Truely shocking. These poor women to lose their jobs.

I heard that the 4th voter didn’t even know what he was voting for but was ordered to vote the correct way

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 19/07/2021 22:41

Well, it's only women losing jobs. And children losing teachers who are arguing for their protection and right to privacy as well as rationality. And US citizens losing their right to freedom of thought and to advocate for basic rights.

Nothing to see here.

I would reccomend a degree of caution in speaking of a protected characteristic possessed by real people as an 'ideology' and thinking that will be consequence-free.
GromblesofGrimbledon · 19/07/2021 23:02

@RobinMoiraWhite

I'll be throwing my caution to the wind and calling it out as ideology all day long.

RedDogsBeg · 19/07/2021 23:04

Gender identity is not a protected characteristic as you well know being a lawyer Robin.

FloralBunting · 19/07/2021 23:05

For the avoidance of confusion for anyone who is perturbed by vague threats of consequences for talking about ideologies, 'gender' is not a protected characteristic. Sex, Sexual Orientation and Gender Reassignment are. You can look them up.

Gender and gender identity aren’t protected characteristics, though. And gender certainly is an ideology, i.e. a set of beliefs common to a group or culture.

Gosh Robin you wouldn't be trying to stifle free speech and critical thought would you? I speak out about gender ideology too. In my teaching role. I will continue to do so.

ValancyRedfern · 19/07/2021 23:10

Your threats have been noted robinmoirawhite. Thank you for your guidance.

14th rule of misogyny:
"Women have all the rights they need: The right to remain silent."

LooksGood · 19/07/2021 23:14

The protected characteristic of gender reassignment isn't an ideology, is it? The philosophy underlying that characteristic might be, but it isn't fixed.

Presumably a year or so ago it was okay for children at @ValencyRedfern 's school to be taught about boy's brains in girl's bodies? Now it's not. Is a biology teacher meant to teach the jelly baby / clownfish model of the sexes? We should not discourage teachers from expressing concerns or reservations in the appropriate manner and forum and I hope you're not suggesting it's illegal for them to do so.

Thank you @ValancyRedfern

You’re quite fond of “recommending a degree of caution” despite being a barrister active in many of these sorts of cases in the UK who has posted your personal views all over Mumsnet for several years 😆😆. Oh and Twitter.

Maybe you should caution yourself for a change.

I, for one, welcome such a stellar legal mind representing Stonewall. I sleep better because of it.

Grin me too Floral.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 20/07/2021 01:25

As religion and belief are themselves one of the nine protected characteristics, how can it be a problem to use the term "ideology"? Does anyone think something would or should happen to me in the workplace because I posted on mumsnet about "Christian ideology"?

What are protected characteristics?

It is against the law to discriminate against someone because of:

age
disability
gender reassignment
marriage and civil partnership
pregnancy and maternity
race
religion or belief
sex
sexual orientation

Theseare called protected characteristics.

Somehow, I always "hear" Robin's helpful advice in the voice of Ann Dowd's Aunt Lydia.

Now you’ve mentioned this, it makes perfect sense. Aunt Lydia indeed. Blessed day.

And always this. Nolite te bastardes carborundorum.

I’m thinking more Dolores Umbridge.

Is this advice being made as one MN member to another? Or, with respect to your professional standing, is this to be interpreted as legal advice (which gives it a different interpretation)? (I'd be surprised at this.)

Leafstamp · 20/07/2021 07:03

For info @RobinMoiraWhite, schools are fast realising that speaking out against gender ideology is absolutely necessary in order for them to comply withThe Equality Act, The Education Act, their Master Funding Agreements (for Academies) as well as various DfE and Ofsted guidelines.
