The level of DARVO and gaslighting going on with that hollyoaks storyline with Sally in prison. Hmm

Has anyone written to Channel4?

Women in prison, usually in for stuff like not paying the telly licence, often already victims to male violence, are having convicted violent male rapists locked in with them!

Then not long after a court case confirming there IS a risk but doing fuck all about it, along comes a soap with the message that TW in female prisons are really the victims, it's women who are the nasty ones, the violent ones, the bad ones.

It's gaslighting on a massive fucking scale, and you don't see why women might just be the teeniest bit pissed off about it?!

What @Ereshkigalangcleg said.

Deliriumoftheendless · 08/07/2021 19:59

No one comes here handing out the telling offs without an agenda.

Even if someone has a trans kid it’s never an accident that they just happen to pop up on a thread to tell everyone how awful we are for wanting to keep single sex spaces.

It’s ALWAYS done with an agenda and as a derail.

The witch comment made me think of this... Grin Yeah, being called a witch is so offensive! Tis not the 1600s anymore (thank the Goddess.)

Back on topic, males shouldn't be in female prisons at all, women shouldn't be collateral damage for this ideology, although given that some transwomen would be at risk in male prisons they should have their own wings away from the general population. Sorted.

@FloralBunting

According to the clips Hollyoaks shared, it was because a gang took a dislike to Sally for not being a real woman. The actor claimed they were GC. I mean, seriously, it's really, really blatant.
Got it. Women are, of course, well known for ganging up on lone males for no reason. Especially when they are going to be locked up with them for the foreseeable.
toffeebutterpopcorn · 09/07/2021 08:15

Maybe people watching (although who watches this awful show) will look all this up.

ScreamingMeMe · 09/07/2021 08:15

So put Sally in the men's prison away from the evil, violent women then?

Makes as much sense as anything in Hillyoaks Hmm

toffeebutterpopcorn · 09/07/2021 08:18

Sillyoaks?

It’s on before the news. Every time of it is on when we switch over, I hear ‘what is this crap?’ or ‘who watches this shite?’

ScreamingMeMe · 09/07/2021 08:20

Ah, ad homiens, appeals to emotion and strawmen. Standard.

I can't actually believe it's still on telly, tbh.

Maybe that's going to be next week's storyline. Sally gets transferred to a men's prison and the male prisoners are all really welcoming and look after Sally and treat Sally like a 'real lady'. Sally now feels validated and has a much better time in prison than she did when she was locked up with the evil T**FS.

Then the MoJ announces that women's prisons are too dangerous for transwomen and they should be housed with the men for their own safety.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 09/07/2021 08:50

There used to be characters like that in ye olde prison films - even MAS*H eh?

Findwen · 09/07/2021 08:50

I think many of you are being really unfair.

In the storyline, Sally goes through an awful time in prison and suffers considerably due to her gender. I would like to thank the writers of Hollyoaks highlighting this sadly common treatment of trans women within our community by GC women and will stand by this new Hollyoaks based campaign to get Transwomen moved to the safer mens prision where they will be treated with respect and acceptance and away from those evil GC witches.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 09/07/2021 08:50

Gender isn’t sex.

Well that Kellie Jay M. actually agrees with this on her Youtube vid "Legal lies and Narcissist narratives" @7.06. So she agrees TWs must have more to fear from criminally convicted women than the other way around.

Me too. Is there a petition I can sign?

Yes, there is even a love interest for Sally!

MistressoftheDarkSide · 09/07/2021 11:51

Haven't watched Hollyoaks for years but not surprised by this storyline at all. Watching the video clip reminded me of being lectured by social workers in a different sphere - getting to the truth of a nuanced individual situation must be sacrificed to a prevailing dogma.....

Talking of fiction allegedly reflecting real life, has anyone here seen Clarice, the Silence of the Lambs spin off?

I found that really conflicting - the TW in that is undoubtedly a sympathetic character, but it was imperative to get across that Clarice should have focussed on getting across in post murder interviews that Buffalo Bill was not trans and that TW had been put at high risk because of salacious reporting.

It simultaneously managed to push my "be kind" button AND my GC button.....

What a world we live in. And don't get me started on the re-make of The Craft.......

ScreamingMeMe · 09/07/2021 12:13

Oh for the love of god Hmm

We are talking about fictional characters in a fictional scenario. If a group of women ever do or ever have beaten up a transwoman, I will eat my hat. And your hat.

When did irony die? Can we give it CPR?

*No match for Joanne Dennehy though.

Joanna Dennehy had men with her and used weapons. Without those, Sally would be more than a match for her.*

Dennehy is also in a max security prison, unsurprisingly. So would only have a chance of coming into contact with prisoners as dangerous as she is. Not some poor, softly-spoken, guilty but not-really-guilty because reasons (I dunno, I don't watch that trash) Sally type (who would still likely be stronger than Dennehy anyway).

Siiigggh.

BaronMunchausen · 09/07/2021 12:15

@Hestyo

From the Herald article: she was also transgender and had not told any of her friends or colleagues. “I kept it very much to myself,” she says. “I just had normal jobs, I kept my head down, I didn’t want to be outed... I had a dilemma – if I became an actor, I was aware that at some point I would have to come out as trans because otherwise somebody would discover I was trans and I thought I’d rather that I was out before that happened.”

This is so bizarre. I don't watch Hollyoaks but occasionally get the last scenes before c4 news, and the very first time I saw this person I knew they were male. I didn't wonder. I very much knew that this was not a female person. I can't believe I'm the only one. I do think a lot of transwomen assume other people's politeness is actually them passing, and it really makes a mockery of the argument that most of them pass and therefore definitely should be using women's spaces.

When I heard the character's line "word got around that I was trans", I assumed Hollyoaks (never watched it) is watched as parody - and that it was intended as inappropriate humour.

It's staggering to learn that the actor has said similar things. This is 'Emperor's Clothes' writ large. It is shielded by the personal (delusion, etiquette) but this dissonant psychology underpins so much - 'female penises', male-bodied people in women's refuges, prisons, etc - that is making women as invisible as the Emperor's clothes.

yourhairiswinterfire · 09/07/2021 12:36

Righto, so if TW don't benefit from being in women's prison, and women don't benefit from TW being in women's prison, it's time the prison service pulled their socks up and come up with an alternative solution, yes?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 09/07/2021 12:39

I'd say so. Good work Annie Wallace for raising this hitherto unexplored issue.

BaronMunchausen · 09/07/2021 12:46

@Twelvetimestwo

Fucking hell, the acting
I sometimes catch the last few minutes of it when I turn over for Channel 4 News, and those are my words exactly.

Don't know whether it's cronyism in casting, wooden script or what, but it's like they're taking the piss.

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 09/07/2021 12:46

It's in such bad taste it's sickening after the rape of 3 women by Karen White but the writer must be such a misogynistic shit that he had to make women the bad guys here.
