The level of DARVO and gaslighting going on with that hollyoaks storyline with Sally in prison. Hmm

Has anyone written to Channel4?

The writer won't apologize for his tweets. Like all the other men who make lewd jokes using slurs about transsexuals, he will face no censure at all as long as he is pushing the TRA line and shitting on women. If he were to recant, of course, they would be evidence of his bigotry. As it is, they will be ignored so long as he serves the cause.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/07/2021 13:08

Spot on, Floral.

MoltenLasagne · 08/07/2021 13:11

So despite the fact that violent males with convictions for sexual assault are attacking female prisoners when they are transferred to women's prisons, C4 decided to go with a storyline of a meek murderer transwoman being attacked by female cell mates despite clearly being twice the size of the average woman . I mean, there's fiction and there's fiction isn't there?

Gottalife · 08/07/2021 14:12

@Hestyo

From the Herald article: she was also transgender and had not told any of her friends or colleagues. “I kept it very much to myself,” she says. “I just had normal jobs, I kept my head down, I didn’t want to be outed... I had a dilemma – if I became an actor, I was aware that at some point I would have to come out as trans because otherwise somebody would discover I was trans and I thought I’d rather that I was out before that happened.”

This is so bizarre. I don't watch Hollyoaks but occasionally get the last scenes before c4 news, and the very first time I saw this person I knew they were male. I didn't wonder. I very much knew that this was not a female person. I can't believe I'm the only one. I do think a lot of transwomen assume other people's politeness is actually them passing, and it really makes a mockery of the argument that most of them pass and therefore definitely should be using women's spaces.

Or most other peoples politeness is because they don't agree with the gender vitriol or becoming obsessed with physical appearences like some kind of gender Gestapo.
FloralBunting · 08/07/2021 14:16

Don't trust your lying eyes, women. Tis not naice. You're practically a nazi otherwise.

Hestyo · 08/07/2021 14:39

I've no idea what gender vitriol is or what a gender gestapo is, but you definitely don't need to be obsessed with physical appearance to accurately clock someone as male or female in the vast majority of cases.

Clymene · 08/07/2021 14:40

@Gottalife - it's not 'obsessed with physical appearances' to be able to tell the difference between men and women. Hmm

Next you'll be telling us it's rude for little girls to notice a penis in a women's changing room

Deliriumoftheendless · 08/07/2021 14:56

I know!
Maybe women should just walk around with our eyes cast down lest we look at something and offend someone.

It’s becoming increasingly obvious some people actually think like that.

Justme56 · 08/07/2021 14:57

Ah yes Hollyoaks always good on real life storylines - Kevin the Alien springs to mind.

Nojobforoldmums · 08/07/2021 14:57

I had heard a bit about this story line and assumed it was that Sally had been put in a men's prison and was beaten up by male transphobes, highlighting the need for an alternative (either transfer to a women's prison or a third space , this being the controversial point). I wonder if that was the original plan, but someone objected to the concept Sally could ever be considered a man?

beastlyslumber · 08/07/2021 14:58

That Sally is a great hulking beast of a lady, isn't she?

No match for Joanne Dennehy though.

Fucking hell, the acting

I think by calling it acting, you're being incredibly kind.
Datun · 08/07/2021 16:09

Placemarking because a) loving the almost universal pushback and b) the acting. Bloody hell. That's more offensive than the rest of it put together.

FloralBunting · 08/07/2021 16:14

Honestly, it's not just the acting. That dialogue makes me weep.

Not from the powerful emotions conveyed, but because it literally hurts to listen to something written by someone who has no idea how people actually speak. Maybe I'm being unfair and Annie Wallace does actually talk like that, though. That's quite plausible.

Terrible writing, terrible acting. I remember Hollyoaks as being better than that, but maybe it wasn't!

I think we were just younger and had fewer viewing options!

I feel the same. I swear when I watched it as a tween/early teens it was a lot more serious and was excellent at raising awareness about all sorts of serious issues like anorexia (Hannah Barnes) and schizophrenia (Newt the emo), but maybe I'm misremembering how good it was?

By the time I stopped watching in my early twenties, a week wouldn't pass without a bus/car/train crash, a murder, someone coming back from the dead, explosions and bombs going off. Then there was the 'twincest' story 🤮

Felt like watching a parody.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/07/2021 17:14

No match for Joanne Dennehy though.

Joanna Dennehy had men with her and used weapons. Without those, Sally would be more than a match for her.
