The corporate wokeness is really getting me down. I am fortunate not to work for these companies but changing banks is harder than changing supermarkets especially when so many branches are closing. Barclays have really over-stepped with this bossy piece of bullying. This Barclays video that actually says you find it confusing? well you don't need to understand, just do the following (presumably without question!). It is just bullying, plain and simple.

I think that's a bit bloody silly. I don't have any problem with normal Pride stuff, personally. But I will not be lectured and hectored about gender identity.

InspiralCoalescenceRingdown · 30/06/2021 17:37

Funny, because I remember this: www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2012/10/30/stonewall-bigot-award-barclays-coots_n_2044134.html

Redapplewreath · 30/06/2021 17:44

I'm not banking with any group embracing a partisan, heavily biased political agenda, particularly one that is focused on removing women's rights. And even more particularly one acting as a mouthpiece for a 'controversial' and 'extreme' political lobby as Stonewall is now being openly described in the newspapers. Fuck that.

InspiralCoalescenceRingdown · 30/06/2021 17:45

This kind of sums up the silliness of it all, doesn't it?

"You don't need to understand it" OK?
"Educate yourself" So we do need to understand it, then?

For the record: I'm no-one's "ally".

" If you don't know the difference between men and women I'm sure as hell not trusting you with my money"
This. I wish I had an account with them so I could close it with as much fuss as possible... Morons.
FlyPassed · 30/06/2021 17:51

Wtaf has this got to do with banking? Nothing, but I'm sure they'll get some brownie points from stonewall.

Incidentally, my dad banked with barclays and when he died i had to call them to sort his affairs out. It took almost 2 hours to get through on the designated bereavment line and when i did the rep gave me a load of old waffle and inhad to escalate to a manager.

@WhatyoutalkingaboutWillis monzo are twaw.

FlyPassed · 30/06/2021 17:53

So what I'm saying is it would be good if they did a bit less pandering and a bit more banking

ArabellaScott · 30/06/2021 18:00

'where people go wrong is they think they need to understand it'

'you don't need to understand it'

Hmm
merrymouse · 30/06/2021 18:15

It’s up to Barclays if they it’s a good idea to instruct their customers to do things they don’t understand - sounds shady to me.

However this video is just plain wrong.

Nobody should feel forced into declaring a gender identity, and it’s particularly wrong to force women to identify with a gender when gendered expectations have put them at such a disadvantage.

KeepingOnKeepingUp · 30/06/2021 18:23

Oh fuck this shit. I really really hate this - the tone, the content, the patronizing nonsense. And from a company with a stonking “gender” pay gap. Clearly equality isn’t equal for everyone. I will not be told what to think or how to act by a company in this way. If Barclays cares so much about LGBTQ+ rights it can come back to me when it’s divested its holding in banks in places like Uganda.

I bank with Barclays and have reasonably complex financial affairs. They do well out of me. But fucking hell, I’m going to have to move everything now aren’t I? I don’t know who isn’t captured by this nonsense.

merry I think the SFO just need to educate themselves.

Barclays (print ad): "To understand how our behaviour and actions can impact others."

Also Barclays: "Hey Saudis with your abhorrent track record against gay people, wanna buy some guns and rockets?"

Hypocritical rainbow washing, again.

merrymouse · 30/06/2021 18:28

@TheHandmadeTails

merry I think the SFO just need to educate themselves.
Like, if only the SFO could be a better ally?
EndoplasmicReticulum · 30/06/2021 18:32

It's rainbow-washing.

Does it work? Are Barclays seeing an increase in customers? Are they getting positive engagement on their social media?
Or are they just pissing everybody off?

Why do it then?

backinthebox · 30/06/2021 18:42

I had to threaten Barclays with the Equality Act 2010 twice in the space of a week when my husband and I applied for a mortgage with them 10 years ago. Firstly they said they were not going to offer us the full amount we asked for because I was on maternity leave and they weren’t going to include my salary. When I queried this, they said they get a lot of women on mat leave who apply for a mortgage based on their salary but never have any intention of going back to work. I pointed out that I was a salaried individual and my maternity status was protected under law and if they wanted to mess with that I would be asking the banking ombudsman if they can do that. Once they’d dug themselves out of that hole, they then fell straight back into another hole when they said they would not be able to proceed with the application because I had a different surname to my husband, and this meant they could not be sure we were married. I offered to send them a copy of our wedding certificate, and they said they would prefer it if my husband wrote to them to confirm we were married but that I had not taken his name. I asked them if a woman needs her husband’s permission to keep the name she was born with, and if she does keep it, is the only way to deal with this going forward to ask the husband to confirm that he does indeed own the woman? After a bit of spluttering from them, I said ‘wouldn’t it be great if I could just show you a piece of paper that my husband has signed to say he agrees to me being his wife, which gives both our names so you can see we are definitely married.’ They said ‘oh yes, that would be great if such a thing existed!’ I sent them my marriage certificate in the end and my husband did not get involved - he was outraged on my behalf. He was newly self-employed and Barclays was the only option open to him at the time but we’ve since changed mortgage provider and I wouldn’t touch Barclays again if you paid me. Their policies, actions and the customer service I’ve received in the past show me that they are not interested in treating women with respect. This video just confirms that.

TheHandmadeTails · 30/06/2021 18:43

Exactly merry! They should wise up, stand up and show up, just not against fraud.

toomanytrees · 30/06/2021 18:44

For those who are Barclay's customers, I recommend complaining directly to your branch manager, either by e-mail, in person or phone. Demand a response. Tell them you are insulted and are on the point of taking your business elsewhere. Make the branch initiate their customer complaints process. Make it very labour intensive for them to deal with you.

Just as well really, 'cause they sure as hell can't explain it.

It’s very unedifying to watch huge corporations flailing like dancing bears to win Stonewall points. How the hell did this collective delusion ever happen?

ChristinaXYZ · 30/06/2021 19:50

Are any of the banks just banks rather than political vehicles? Which is the least woke?

Anyone know about First Direct?
