Twitter is telling them you cannot call yourself Korean if you’re not Korean.

I’ve seen a video about him before,
He’s batshit, he is from a very wealthy family and is obsessed with a member of BTS, so much so he’s had hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of surgery to look like him.
In Korea they think he is hilariously batshit, it seems to be a bit like car crash tv, he’s had 5 minutes of fame over there and he’s released a couple of semi successful Kpop songs.

I think a lot of it is about attention.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 22/06/2021 20:12

Can they/? actually speak Korean? Have they even been? It’s a bit like me deciding that after watching Mary Poppins from my home in downtown Seoul that I’m a real like cockernee.

NancyDrawed · 22/06/2021 20:12

@CiaoForNiao

I really can't work out who is taking the liss and who isn't any more, the whole thing is just so ridiculous

Same.

It reminds me of a YouTube video I saw where a man asks a load of people if he can identify as a woman if he wants. They all say yes. Then he asks if he can identify as 6foot tall and they say yes, even though he isn't. He asks about IDing as a child, a Chinese person. They get progressively less sure that yes he can self ID as something he isn't, but of course if they say 'no' then he'd question why he can claim to be a woman. I think by the end he basically gets them to agree that he's a 6ft tall, 7 year old Chinese girl.

This one?
NancyDrawed · 22/06/2021 20:18

The above video is from 2016!

I wonder what would happen if he tried doing the same again.

ASpoonfulofDust · 22/06/2021 20:24

That video!!

When asked how she would respond if the short, white male presenter said he was a female Chinese 7 year old she was cool with it all.

When he said he was 6foot5 (clearly not) and asked if she would question it, she says:

"I don't feel that it's my place as a human being to draw a line or have boundaries"
WTF??

No lines. No boundaries. Yikes.

CiaoForNiao · 22/06/2021 20:25

That's the one @NancyDrawed thanks.

It would be interesting to do it again!

CervixSampler · 22/06/2021 20:41

Love it. Basically, we should all be able to identify as whatever we feel we are. I'm a 5ft 6" Irish red head who speaks fluent Gaelic. Back in the real world I'm barely 5'3", my granddaddy was of Irish descent, my red has faded to more blonde and I know a few words of Gaelic. But that doesn't matter, right, because I have some Irish DNA. Somewhere. Possibly in my little toe.

JediGnot · 22/06/2021 20:54

I definitely identify as younger, slimmer and cooler than I am.

Gingerkittykat · 22/06/2021 22:14

I just asked my very woke, formerly NB, blue haired DD about Oli London and even she said he was a joke; she normally makes a big deal about pronouns but in this case ignored them.

She's annoyed because she loves K-Pop and the band he is trying to emulate. She said herself that it sounds like satire and whipped her phone out to show me loads of pictures.

theleavesaregreen · 22/06/2021 22:25

That video! It should be shown in schools. I'm going to try to persuade DD to watch it.

Undersnatch · 22/06/2021 22:26

This is almost hilarious if the reality of what it means wasn’t so tragic.

FOJN · 22/06/2021 22:49

Thanks for tracking that video down. I've seen it before and was struck again by how worried the students seem about the truth causing offence.

As Magdalen Bern's said, " minds so open, their brains have fallen out".

trancepants · 23/06/2021 07:32

Weirdly enough I saw that guy on a reality show last week and he genuinely does seem to have a desperate desire to be Korean. Not just a regular Korean person but a K-pop super star. I don't think he's quite well mentally, tbh.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 23/06/2021 07:34

We had some Korean families at DSs school when he was little. This person does realise that they aren’t all pink haired pretty boy/girl band members doesn’t he?

It's the logical/illogical destination for identity being based on feelings.
The unintended consequences of Queer doctrine?
It does sound as if this person isn't quite well, unfortunately there seems to be a few people who are casualties of the cosmetic surgery industry.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 23/06/2021 08:10

I wonder what will happen 10,20 years along for this person.

justanotherneighinparadise · 23/06/2021 09:38

I suspect they’ll end up choosing to be female like Jessica Alves or just knacker their health with constant cosmetic enhancements and die early like Pete Burns.

He's just another overindulged rich man.

SeasideM · 23/06/2021 18:32

Surely all that feel if a male really really wants to be female he automatic IS female are totally on board that this person IS Korean if he really really wants to be right? They wouldn’t dare to question such a personal identity and would be kind always right?

Seems the only time it isn’t apparent that “identifying” your way in/out of something factual is a farce is when it involves opting in/out of being female.

Frenchfancy · 23/06/2021 18:43

I'm finding the comments saying that you can't change your nationality rather amusing. I confess I don't know what the rules are in Korea (I assume they are South Korean) but you most certainly can change nationality, I did and without any plastic surgery.

Like Laurel Hubbard?

Nationality is different to ethnicity though. A white person can’t become black or Asian in the same way a male can’t become female. Unless you believe wishing it so and a bit of surgery can change that.

MondayYogurt · 23/06/2021 19:17

If someone is born in Africa are they African?
