Organisations Leaving Stonewall: The List

Barracker · 29/05/2021 19:50

Thought it would be handy to keep a running list here of organisations who have done 'budget reviews' or similar and have subsequently decided that Stonewall are 'not value for money'.

EHRC
ACAS
House of Commons
DVLA
Dorset Police
The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government

Do feel free to update the thread as more join the exodus.

It is horrifying how a lobby group have so much power.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 29/05/2021 20:00

The DVLA? Have I missed my opportunity to self-identify as an HGV driver and go for a spin down the M4?

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 29/05/2021 20:02

It's beginning to look as if that list has been out-of-date for a while.

From the Telegraph article:

The House of Commons said it did not renew its membership for 2020. The Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) said it exited in December, while Acas, the employment dispute service, said it had withdrawn “for cost reasons” last June.
Dorset Police, one of multiple forces previously listed as part of the scheme, said it is now not a member. The Ministry of Housing and Local Government said it left in 2019.

Barracker · 29/05/2021 20:07

I'm the spirit of inclusivity, I think we should include on the list any organisation which has left Stonewall in the last, shall we say, three years?
I for one hadn't realised the HoC had left so quietly last year, for example. Valuable to just keep a record, I think.

Would it be worth putting in a few FOI requests? Might be interesting to see why they left, or if there is any correspondence about it.

Agreed. However, it puts Nancy Kelley's doubling-down and insouciance as to any consequences in a new light (for me).

Some of the #DontSubmitToStonewall requests found that some orgs were not planning to renew.

Fascinating thread! Some big names already.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 29/05/2021 20:16

There could be (I hope) a few corporations to add to that list ere long. The women at Sex Matters are writing/have written to the champions to challenge them on their membership

Mollyollydolly · 29/05/2021 20:26

I remember reading an article about the DVLA and it's handling of Covid. It was a complete shit show, they could afford to do this for 'diversity' points but didn't protect their staff when it came down to it.
Anyway, brilliant news, I want to see more police forces on that list. In fact I want to see more everything on that list.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 29/05/2021 20:32

The women at Sex Matters are writing/have written to the champions to challenge them on their membership

Sex Matters is asking people to pick 5 organisations to write to and send them their personalised version of the letter.

Check the list of Stonewall Champions
Pick five institutions you are close to. For example your local council, your local NHS trust, a government department, your university, companies you buy from, charities you support.
Write to them with a copy of our letter and a personal note from you

OhHolyJesus · 29/05/2021 20:39

This is a good list for prospective drop outs though not confirmed it appears that

Lloyds and Channel 4 may have cut ties

Their global list of champions is here, though it seems shorter to me.

Leafstamp · 29/05/2021 20:40

Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucester CCG (NHS) did not renew membership to Stonewall in 2020.

dvla allows to change the sex marker on the driving licence without a grc
ArabellaScott · 29/05/2021 20:56

Oh, gosh, who was expecting that, how surprising.

Helen8220 · 29/05/2021 21:13

I’m pleased to say that my employer is renewing its membership for another year. I’d be concerned what it would say about their commitment to LGBT+ inclusion if they didn’t.

ArabellaScott · 29/05/2021 21:16

Here's one for the DVLA:

'Everything you say is lies
But to me that's no surprise
What I had for you was true
Things go wrong, they always do'

Lettera · 29/05/2021 21:25

Helen8220

Why do you think it's necessary for your employer to pay hundreds of pounds to Stonewall in order to be inclusive?

Theeyeballsinthesky · 29/05/2021 21:25

I’d love to know how much these all so terribly inclusive rainbow waving organisations actually do to include those people with protected characteristics that require a bit of effort e.g making physical alterations to buildings to accommodate disabilities or having robust policies to ensure pregnant women aren’t discriminated against or ensuring that a women’s support network is single sex?

Or is being inclusive to gender woo the only one that counts?

beryltheperilrocks · 29/05/2021 21:26

@Helen8220

Because that's the only way to be inclusive?
ArabellaScott · 29/05/2021 21:28

Stonewall is only inclusive of some people, their Chief said so very clearly this morning. Not even all LGBTQ people!

'We don't claim to represent everyone in the LGBTQ community' - Nancy Kelley

So it's a sort of exclusive type of inclusivity. Bit of an odd one.

I’d be concerned about what it says about their commitment to LGB & women’s inclusion if they do.

Do you have any basis to distrust your colleagues to such an extent that you consider your workplace is only inclusive because your employer spends money with Stonewall?
Helen8220 · 29/05/2021 21:36

Stonewall help us make sure our policies are as LGBT+ inclusive as possible and prepare staff training (eg on being a good ally), puts us in touch with other organisations to share best practice, offers discounts on training and conferences.

My organisation generally puts quite a lot of time and effort into D&I on all fronts.
