Organisations Leaving Stonewall: The List

Barracker · 29/05/2021 19:50

Thought it would be handy to keep a running list here of organisations who have done 'budget reviews' or similar and have subsequently decided that Stonewall are 'not value for money'.

EHRC
ACAS
House of Commons
DVLA
Dorset Police
The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government

Do feel free to update the thread as more join the exodus.

Sex Matters: We do not think it is necessary or appropriate for public bodies to engage in a secret scheme in order to comply with the Equality Act 2010. If membership of the Diversity Champions scheme could harm public perceptions of Ofcom’s impartiality, continued membership of a scheme under which it pays Stonewall to give it secret coaching and feedback on its policies and its performance of its public functions will do much worse damage.

Quite.

The means by which a public body upholds the equality act must remain secret???

Who on earth do they think they are kidding!! It's quite unbelievable.

FindTheTruth · 25/08/2021 14:47

@AnyOldPrion

Doesn’t sound like you’re missing anything, Find. The statement makes it clear they’re making a strategic change in an attempt to silence critics, while carrying on with the scheme under the radar. Fits in perfectly with transactivist strategy, and well done to Sex Matters for revealing what they’re trying to do.
Blimey. Well done SexMatters. It's crazy. The “Workplace Equality Index” IS the fucking scheme. So no change then

Thanks @Igneococcus

A BBC spokesman justified its position, saying: “We are not a member of Stonewall, we do not take legal advice from Stonewall and we do not subscribe to Stonewall’s campaigning. The charity simply provides advice that we are able to consider.”

The charity simply provides advice that we are able to consider

NOT simply provides advice; It's an unequal relationship where BBC HR and Equalities Diversity Officers spend a huge amount of time filling in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index Forms after rolling out changes across the BBC to get higher up the INDEX. Not CONSIDER BUT COMPLY.

The CPS:

It's only on twitter but it seems to have been picked up by the BBC.

nauticant · 13/09/2021 12:10

An interesting development compared to how things were developing at the start of the year:

About time. They should have left when it became apparent that a schoolgirl felt she had no choice but to initiate legal action because they were misrepresenting legislation.

Yep! I just came here to add that.

I was so excited I even started a thread - cos the confirmation is a bit thin on the gorund at the moment - I heard it on Radio2 news and have since seen a John McManus' Twitter confirnmation!!

Stonewall != VFM - just to sound science-y.

Stonewall is an MLM. A very small number of people are making a fortune. Countless people are accruing harm. (I've never claimed to be an advertising copy-writer.)

TrainedByCats · 28/09/2021 21:06

Good news about Lancashire Police Grin

highame · 29/09/2021 08:38

I read, last year, that one of the government departments had left Stonewall, but when a bit more digging was done, it was found that they had just moved the stuff to another department and were continuing following the advice. I really can't remember where I read this (referring to CPS part of the thread). I think you'll find this is common because the capture of the public services and civil service by the 'top brass' is unbelievable. Lets appease the dumb women, they'll never notice, seems like a suitable logo for these departments

Thanks findthetruth

There is a copy on one of the archive sites for those without access.

The other departments are:

After the Department of Health last week became the last high-profile public body to distance itself from the lobby group, The Telegraph has learned that several more are now considering their position.
^
They include the Treasury, the Department for Education (DfE) and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), while insiders at the Department for International Trade said it had quietly declined to renew its subscription.^

It is understood that Therese Coffey, the Work and Pensions Secretary, is now considering alternatives to Stonewall, while sources said that Nadhim Zahawi, the Education Secretary, is alive to the concerns being raised about the charity.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport is preparing to renew its membership of Stonewall’s diversity champions scheme for another 12 months, but will no longer accept its legal advice.

Yes, I would be wary of this happening also. I remember something from the Nolan podcast where one of the organisations (Ofcom?) said that they were leaving the champions scheme, but still remained with Stonewall in other ways or something. Very bait and switch.

It's all about saving face for them really.

LonginesPrime · 07/11/2021 15:23

Exactly - it's the Workplace Equality Index that places pressure on organisations to change policies and push out gender initiatives, not so much the Champions programme (which they can take advice from or not, as they're the paying clients).

It's the Workplace Equality Index that captures organisations, as it pressures them to please Stonewall as Stonewall is the one judging them based on its own made-up criteria.

Organisations won't get ranked if they don't make Stonewall happy, and they worry about being seen as transphobic (given that even thinking GC thoughts is transphobic to stonewall) if they are deemed unworthy by Stonewall.

Obviously the Champions scheme isn't great, but the real scandal is the Workplace Equality Index, IMO.

FindTheTruth · 07/11/2021 17:05

the real scandal is the Workplace Equality Index

YUP. any organisation still in the WEI hasn't left Stonewall

Isthatthebestyoucando · 07/11/2021 17:11

Is there a list of organisations in the WEI?

LonginesPrime · 07/11/2021 17:29

Is there a list of organisations in the WEI?

Only the ones that rank in the top 100 and end up in Stonewall's yearly WEI report.

The other 400+ organisations don't publicise that they didn't make the top 100.

FOI requests would reveal the submissions for public bodies though (some have already been made public that way).
