New name for women

If (and this is a very big if) it was to be accepted that the meaning of ´woman’ had evolved to include more than just adult human females, do you have any ideas of what the new and necessary single word replacement should be?

Wouldn’t the convoluted alternatives be unnecessary if ´goddess’ or whatever was used where biology was important.

Whilst highly contentious this is intended to be slightly lighthearted.

No, because a) we shouldn’t give it up, and b) the TRAs would then just start calling themselves ‘goddesses’, or whatever and we’d be back to square 1.

HecatesCatsInFancyHats · 20/05/2021 20:00

Hard no from me. Woman means adult human female.

PaleGreenGhost · 20/05/2021 20:05

Karen

Because it's the only term that won't get appropriated.

There was a thread a while back where enthusiasm grew for various iterations of Vulva Driver because it sounds cool.

FoxSunshine · 20/05/2021 20:07

Wasn’t there a midwife mentioned on here who had changed her pronouns to wombstress?

thepuredrop · 20/05/2021 20:07

No from me too. We already have a word. We’re not allowed to think of new words to describe ourselves, we have to be defined by their terms: cis woman, person with a uterus, etc. As soon as we think of our own word, it will be appropriated just like woman and female have been.

Erikrie · 20/05/2021 20:10

No. I can't even be light hearted about it. Woman: adult human female. That's it. It doesn't include born males.

yourhairiswinterfire · 20/05/2021 20:11

I think I'd be happy to settle for Wimpund, only because I don't think they'd want that name, being as the devil incarnate penned it Wink
somethinginoffensive · 20/05/2021 20:22

Women. Because we all understood what you meant in the title of this thread. You said women and you meant women.

Monicuddle · 20/05/2021 20:40

Womben

Kotatsu · 20/05/2021 20:45

we can't - there are laws written using the word for christ sake - you can't just change a word used in law and pick a new one!

UppityPuppity · 20/05/2021 20:48

No. Woman is mine.

There are plenty of other words that they could use.

Monicuddle · 20/05/2021 20:49

“You can’t just change a word used in law” - but they have.

@Monicuddle

“You can’t just change a word used in law” - but they have.
Exactly

Apparently you can change the meaning of a word completely

Like staycation...

Lordamighty · 20/05/2021 20:50

No, I’m sticking with woman, I like it, it suits me, I am one because of my biology, all other inferior words can get lost.

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/05/2021 20:52

There was a really good cartoon someone posted with the budging up that happens. Essentially there are people who don't want there to be a word for uterusesses havers. So no matter what you choose, it will be an issue.

Kotatsu · 20/05/2021 20:57

“You can’t just change a word used in law” - but they have.

In Scotland perhaps, but in England and Wales it is still 'a female of any age'

Rolling over and picking a new word is just burying your head in the sand though - 'woman' and its generally understood definition needs to be defended.

Monicuddle · 20/05/2021 21:02

In Ireland too :( and much of the USA

You are all right of course. It’s just so fucking outrageous. I don’t know if ‘woman’ can come back from this.

Napssszzz · 20/05/2021 21:04

I was thinking xxers... But I'm totally up for sticking with woman

toffeebutterpopcorn · 21/05/2021 07:42

Not budging. It’s like when you are a kid and your big sister takes the last red lolly in the pack (that she knows is your favourite). So you pick the yellow one and start saying ‘mmmmmm lemon!’ - and she decides that she needs that one too. And so on until you are fighting over the fig lolly.

Umpteenthiteration · 21/05/2021 07:45

Thin end of the wedge isn't it?

NO.

EdgeOfACoin · 21/05/2021 07:49

There was some daft MSP who claimed on Twitter that mtf transitioners were also 'adult human females'.

I believe India Willoughby claims to be a 'cis woman'.

Doesn't matter which word you use. It will be appropriated.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 21/05/2021 07:51

Uhuh. And I’m literally and actually a donkey...

Blackopal · 21/05/2021 07:51

I was at A Women's Place meeting a few years ago and this was suggested by one of the speakers.

The reaction from every one was a shocked no.

The problem is the TRA campaign is not about equality or compromise it's about domination and capitulation.

If women gave up our own word for something different, that new word would then be the new goal.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 21/05/2021 07:53

A rose by any other name...

I can call myself anything - but I’m still, errr, a rose!
