Article in daily fail (sorry)

4 year old female twin says she is a boy (like her twin brother) and expresses interest in firefighters & police officers & doesn't like pigtails.

So the parents are transitioning their 4 year old and saying they have grown up conversations about gender with them.

Sigh.

am so proud that he knows who he is and isn't constrained by societal norms and prejudices

Have they said this to be ironic?

@LadyBuffOfBuffdonia

Well, of you knew anything about being vegan you'd know it was a philosophical way of living and not a trend. What you're talking about is being plant based. And you may see it how you like, but having a swipe at a group that has nothing to do with gender ideology is pretty unfair.
What she you on about? So are trying to tell me that there hasn’t been a massive increase in people becoming vegans in the last few years? And that I must be mistaken?

It’s nothing derogatory towards true vegans (if you’ve been one for 30 years then clearly I’m not referring to you) it’s simply about some people proclaiming they are buy only because it’s seen as fashionable now.

LadyBuffOfBuffdonia · 05/05/2021 20:36

It was less the vegan cat comment that I thought was a swipe than the 'I bet they're vegan too' comment. It's dismissive of a whole group of people who largely have no interest in gender ideology.
And I notice vegan as a trend was picked, not coloured hair, cropped tops, Tik tok users or any other trend.
I just find it comes across as rather bitchy.

ConfusedAdultFemale · 05/05/2021 20:36

How is this not child abuse?

NecessaryScene1 · 05/05/2021 20:41

Well, of you knew anything about being vegan you'd know it was a philosophical way of living and not a trend.

And that's the point. 4-year-olds and cats do not have philosophical ways of living. Their parents/owners do.

maddiemookins16mum · 05/05/2021 20:41

Utter nonsense.

LadyBuffOfBuffdonia · 05/05/2021 20:43

There's been a big increase in people being more consciousness with meat sure, whether buying a bit less, going vegetarian or vegan.
The increase will be a mix and imo there's nothing wrong with following a trend for good reasons (for example some people want to buy less meat and eat higher welfare when they do because they care about the environment/welfare).
People simply eating differently to follow a trend can't be vegan by definition because the motivation is animal welfare and not to be cool/health/the environment.
So yes, a huge number of people aren't vegan because that's not their motivation. They are plant based. And I may have been vegan a long time, but DH is more recent. You'd lump him in as a trend follower but 40+ men don't get anything but grief for going veg so would seem a poor motivation to me.
But again, changing your diet has nothing to do with gender ideology, so bringing it up as a dig is dismissive.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 05/05/2021 20:43

Kids accept what you tell them at that age - as the child grows the questions will be trickier and harder to answer. Who decided if this child goes on drugs on the pathways to surgery later on?

LadyBuffOfBuffdonia · 05/05/2021 20:44

As said before, my comment was not at the vegan cat comment. It was at the I bet they're vegan comment.
Different sentiment.

DenisetheMenace · 05/05/2021 20:44

Oh FFS, our nephew wanted to be Stephanie, not Sportacus, when he was 4 because he loved dancing like a cheerleader. Should he have been counselled?

He’s 18 now and very much in love with his girlfriend. Still loves dancing like a cheerleader.

The reason vegan was used, it’s it’s a lifestyle choice, as oppose to wearing crop tops, lip fillers etc... that are currently in fashion.

It’s nothing to do with true vegans and those doing it for the right reason and everything to do with bandwagon vegans.

TableFlowerss · 05/05/2021 20:50

The ones that plaster vegan FB pages and yet you know they still use leather shoes 🤦‍♀️

LadyBuffOfBuffdonia · 05/05/2021 20:51

@NecessaryScene1 my family are vegetarian. Just as a Muslim family eats halal. This philosophy doesn't cause them harm and when they are adults they can choose for themselves. The same as in the west people generally have a philosophy it's ok to eat farm animals and not dogs and bring their children up this way.

This is very different from telling a child they are the opposite sex which has mental and physical harms as a result.

Just would appreciate it if people didn't equate it.

And I am aware cats can't be vegan. That's why we have rabbits.

Now, a kid who identifies as Robbie Rotten, that could be difficult.

Quick sign him up for Tavi! He must just not know he's trans yet. Boys can't like girl's things!

Interesting point. I had to buy leather shoes for Ds as apparently they don't make cruisers in non leather materials. I considered it negligent not to get him suitable shoes though so had to go with what is available. It's annoying but I don't feel less vegan because of it.

Also, some vegans will wear leather items they purchased before going vegan so not to add to landfill. They'll wear them till they fall apart.
And some vegan shoes look like leather and they're not.

But generally, no a vegan person wouldn't buy leather shoes.

Anyway, let's leave it there before this becomes the vegan cat thread. 🐈

Well I know a couple of people that post all over FB about animal cruelty and how great it is to be vegan and how we all should be....

Yet they eat fish.... And have been known to eat chicken because it looked too nice in a restaurant. Their main motivation is how they are perceived in society and their social media account and not to do with animal welfare etc... I’m not saying they don’t care about animal welfare, but not as much as they care about they are perceived.

LadyBuffOfBuffdonia · 05/05/2021 21:05

I've got good news for you.

They're not vegan.

Give them a slap from me!

Loved Robbie Rotten. I no doubt need urgent psycho-analysis.

ToesAndFingersCrossed · 05/05/2021 21:08

I know someone with “trans” 4 year old. Apart from parenting (they don’t believe in saying “no” to their child) what really gets me is when this child was a boy they (the parents) were all about rejecting gender stereotypes, letting him dress however he wishes and play with all sorts of toys. Now he’s apparently a girl the stereotypes are rigid - it’s 100% frilly dresses and dolls. The parents so very obviously wanted a girl. It’s depressing.

ToesAndFingersCrossed · 05/05/2021 21:10

That was supposed to say “terrible parenting”

Lucaslucas1612 · 05/05/2021 21:14

This is so disturbing, she is far too young to make this decision. Thank god the clinic won't even look at her until she's 10. The parents think they are doing the right thing and being liberal but really they are going to damage that child. She doesn't know who she is, she's four!Just let her explore and see what happens

DD was a real tomboy, she never wants her hair done in pigtails or even a pony tail, wanted short hair, wouldn't wear dresses or skirts, hated pink etc and is friends with all the boys and plays with what would be considered to be traditional boys toys. She hates pretty shoes and only wears trainers. We went with it and allowed her to do all that. We never told her she wanted to be a boy, she was simply her.

She's now 6 and is much more 'girlie' as they say. Why put a label on it, they are actually stopping her naturally develop her own opinions and make her own choices.

AfternoonToffee · 05/05/2021 21:18

Thanks for this link. I am really challenged buying clothes for my 11 year old. She only ever now wears black leggings and boys tshirts as girls clothes in her age range are so gendered and sadly sexualised.

Ever tried buying a girls top that is not a crop top, without a slogan or frills? ! I've given up.

I found that age difficult to buy for (and no doubt will again with the next one), there seems to be this polar opposite of Disney and 'too old'. My 15 year old lives in black leggings (whole other issue getting them for her legs that reach my armpits) and t-shirts which are mainly from H&M, so eventually it gets easier again.

CaveMum · 05/05/2021 21:18

Didn’t realise my “Vegan Cat” comment was going to draw such controversy!

To clarify, it was not intended as a slight against vegans, it was simply meant in the context of when people claim to have a vegan cat we know it’s not the cat making that decision - similarly when parents of young children claim that their child is trans we can be pretty darn certain the child is not the one driving that choice.

Apologies for any offence to vegans!
