Lesbian Visibility Week

ASugarr · 01/05/2021 07:39

As Lesbian Visibility Week comes to an end, I want to make a quick reminder that
ALL LESBIANS ARE VALID!

Cisgender and Transgender women can be lesbians. Transgender men who date women don't consider themselves lesbians. All Lesbians deserve visibility!

Additionally, many have stated that they don't wish to date transgender people. That's fine! Just because someone is in the same dating pool doesn't mean you MUST be attracted to them. Plus genital preference is also totally fine! But don't forget, trans women are women so please do not degrade them just because you personally don't wish to date them.

Plus, let's continue to educate one another on the important information. Like preventing STI's as a lesbian, domestic abuse in lesbian relationships and how to deal with that, safe and consentual sex between lesbians. This is what we need to be educating young lesbians and bisexual women on.

Have a fabulous long weekend all 🤍🌈

Well if you don't consider yourself cisgender or transgender then can you give a word for suggest what you are? Because cisgender is being a female woman and transgender is being anything else.

Woman is the word you're looking for: adult human female. No prefix required.

Deliriumoftheendless · 01/05/2021 09:33

“Oh god I watched a bizarre film the other day about a woman who had a baby, then a sex change, then became a time traveller, then fathered the baby. And then the baby grew up to be the woman.

My head is still hurting.“

That film is Predestination and it is absolute bollocks.

Shug- you come here and scatter your little hearts and act like a teenager but one day you will say the wrong thing and the people you think you are supporting will turn on you. Your need for attention is your own business, and I’m not entirely without sympathy, but it leads you to behave in a way that is destructive to others. That’s something you should maybe reflect on, but only you can do that.

But the community you convince yourself you are supporting are vigilant in monitoring for indiscretions, and the goal posts shift all the time. And when someone perceived an error in tone, or language or simply objects to your “cis privilege” allowing you to speak in a trans person’s place you will see the women here have been talking about.

But it’s ok because however awful you think the women of FWR are, there will always be loads willing to offer support when it is needed.

🤍

Very few lesbians on this thread. It’s an interesting illustration of the dynamic of the current ‘LGBT+’ campaigning. Straight people, especially men, loudly telling lesbians we have to redefine ourselves, completely refusing to accept there is any such thing as lesbian culture or a distinctiveness about women-only and lesbian-only spaces, and reducing our love of women and sexual orientation towards them to a ‘genital preference’. Lesbians vote with their feet and leave that space and reconvene quietly elsewhere.

Must be maddening for the men and the redefiners: no matter how hard they try, how much lesbophobia they throw at us, they can’t ultimately get to be us or control us. We are still women who love women, and they have no part in that.

OhHolyJesus · 01/05/2021 09:35

Exactly @CorvusPurpureus and we have another full thread on this already.

How is this not TAAT?

I can see the fishing rod from here.

Erkrie · 01/05/2021 09:36

It looks like a TAAT to me.

Doyoumind · 01/05/2021 09:41

I would class it as a TAAT but different rules seem to apply on this board.

334bu · 01/05/2021 09:42

"let’s turn this thread into a thread about how to support females who are same sex attracted

that would be amazing, I would really value any suggestions."

Given the prevalence of corrective rape in countries such as South Africa, maybe we should support charities fighting this? Does anyone know any names?

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 01/05/2021 09:42

@CorvusPurpureus

Hang on, have we managed to agree that lesbians need to be 'legally female'?

Blimey, that's a breakthrough.

Not that Asugarr 's opinion has all that much merit given that she is not, in fact, a lesbian, but it's an encouraging small step back to Reality Planet.

A whole thread was deleted due to sugar saying that it was fine to refer to transpeople by their genitals and that transpeople wouldn’t mind and everyone on the thread testing the theory, even though just about everyone thought it was a bad idea

So im really not keen on relying on their ‘facts/opinions’

NecessaryScene1 · 01/05/2021 09:42

It looks like a TAAT to me.

Nah, it's just part two. And the formula hasn't changed much. I don't have a problem keeping it going, although I would appreciate more ice-cream unicorns. Of any flavour.

Visibility is good.

WoolOfBat · 01/05/2021 09:59

I would be very interested in other way to support lesbians.

I just cannot get my head around this. Lesbians have had so many obstacles to face. They finally reached a stage where there was a certain acceptance and visibility. The way men historically has treated lesbians is horrific.

I am so incredibly sad that people now not only try to identify into lesbianism but also push actual lesbians out and/or force them to accept dick. Those stories about current harassment of lesbians is a new level of awful.

Flowers for all lesbians.

Thecatonthemat · 01/05/2021 10:16

I’m a lesbian and posts like this are like an irritating fly buzzing around that you can’t be bothered to swat. Thank you for the solidarity shown here by so many on these threads . They serve as a horrible warning as to what to expect if we give one inch on this craziness.

Newnewnew1179 · 01/05/2021 10:18

I’m usually a lurker. I find it deeply unpleasant that on lesbian visibility week these threads are posted to state - in the midst of utterly incoherent arguments and word mangling- that lesbians can be men and lesbian sex can involve a penis.

I mean what the hell is the genital preference thing about? Is it now the case than in order not to be classed as a bigot or horror of horrors “un-inclusive”, lesbians are being told that it is permitted to say to someone with a penis “I’m so sorry but I don’t want to sleep with you because I don’t happen to fancy you” but not “I don’t want to sleep with you because I’m a lesbian and you are a man” as this could be transphobic??

My Duolingo Italian practice last night was full of people eating coffee or chocolate ice creams.
LadyBuffOfBuffdonia · 01/05/2021 10:33

Thanks for an interesting read. I certainly didn't know the lobster or flamingo facts so that's some interesting learning to squirrel away for when the pubs open back up.

I'd like to remind posters that Mumsnet has safeguarding responsibilities and anything you see that could be a potential safeguarding issue should be reported to headquarters.

To lesbians reading this thread Gin Smile

ArabellaScott · 01/05/2021 10:34

Magdalen.

ArabellaScott · 01/05/2021 10:35

Also worth noting that Arielle Scarcella there has since changed her views considerably:

Redapplewreath · 01/05/2021 10:41

So what I get from this is that you're whatever you say you are and everyone else is whatever you say they are, and up is down and left is right and in is out, or something, and that's all really positive in a modern kind of way.

Well have fun with that. This lesbian's going to go be visible somewhere else and stick with the old fashioned stuff, because life's plain too short.

TheWeeDonkey · 01/05/2021 10:45

Its a strange thing isn't it?

Maybe OP can have her own continual thread running as its clear to me the only thing she really wants is attention, any kind of attention, but as an adult thats her problem not ours.

I think the main things I've learned from this thread is that homophobia and particularly lesphobia is still so prevalant and even acceptable to too many people and we all need to join the fight to change that and that biology matters.

Flowers and Chocolate and Wine to all the lesbians reading this thread, you deserve better.

NonnyMouse1337 · 01/05/2021 10:49

Here's a fun fact!

Not all cats have tails, you know. Some cats, like the Manx cat, are born with only a stub for a tail. It's complex science.

That's why capybaras are also cats because they are furry animals with four legs and no tail.

See these two pictures. Bet you can't tell the cis cat from a trans cat. They are indistinguishable! You've come across many capybaras in your life and not even realised it!

Pretty much. And ASugarr will continue to use offensive terms with apparent impunity.

Bordois · 01/05/2021 10:57

Its interesting to see what one side of the debate are allowed to get away with on here. Homophobia and lesbophobia are fine as long as its done in the name inclusiveness.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 01/05/2021 10:58

Yes, a very appropriate week to give tribute to the life of Magdalen Flowers.

HecatesCatsInFancyHats · 01/05/2021 11:00

Happy end of 'Everyone and anyone's a Lesbian' week!

Blimey - thats a lot of shouty capitals - do you always communicate like this?
NotTerfNorCis · 01/05/2021 11:16

TWAW. TWACW. TWAF.

Sounds like a bad cough you've got there.
