Knew this would happen, had to turn down job

I'm furious, have been out of work for a while. Was offered a temporary contract writing and implementating policy for a public sector organisation. Just up my street and would really have helped us out. Turns out they're Stonewall champions and are full on TWAW and have all rights to anything they want. I asked to review some of their current policies and it's all cisgender crap and lists of stuff we must and mustn't do to make all Trans people safe. We'll I've obviously had to turn down the role and worse I told the recruiter why so will probably never get a job through them now. There are companies out there that haven't bought into all this crap aren't there?

I'm sorry Thanks but good on you for standing up for what you believe.

I think the culture of an organisation is important and I'm sure there is a better fit for you out there.

To give another perspective, I work for an org that is the opposite, we partner with a lot of businesses in the UAE. Consequently we cannot do anything surrounding LGBT rights. It's a pretty sexist culture to be honest.

Something in between would be ideal. Good luck.

@MaximumVolume

My company is currently advertising for a mat cover Contracts Officer if that is a similar role ? Let me know and I’ll DM the details.
Thank you that's really kind of you. I work more in HR though so it probably wouldn't be for me xx

I think why I'm really cross (am in garden with wine now so can properly contemplate it), is the fact I CAN turn the job down because we're ok financially (for the minute anyway), I'll need a job but we have some reserves we can draw on so it's not urgent.

I keep thinking though what if things got really bad financially and I had no choice? We've kids to feed and clothe. It's easy to show integrity when you have other options but how about when you don't? Will I one day find myself in a position where I have to accept jobs like this and go along with it or risk losing our family home? I think about the women who may not be lucky enough to be in my situation (and mine doesn't feel very lucky ATM). I think this is at the heart of my fury. Men don't get this.

Come and work for the NHS in maternity. I’ve had two high level discussion this week where senior staff have expressed confusion over objections to the term “pregnant women”, and will not use the term “women and pregnant people” as they know it will offend lots of service users.

Might be because we are a rural county and not a city though!

In the plus side, when sanity finally returns, there will be a lot of companies needing to rewrite their policies, so work should be very plentiful Smile

I like your thinking 👍👍👍 you're a wise woman (I assume!).

Almost no-one has a fully coherent stance on “human rights”, because most people and most organisations are a seething mass of contradictions and expedience / pragmatism.

I0NA · 22/04/2021 15:23

@ArabellaScott

I'm sorry, OP. But well done for standing up for your principles.

Womens' rights are human rights; you are completely correct.

@ArabellaScott

Jesus isn't on this thread.
Christ is an expletive interjection that refers to the Christian religious figure of Jesus Christ. The expressions "Christ", "Jesus", and "Jesus Christ" are also used as exclamations or expletives in English-speaking, Christian-influenced societies

Were you talking to me or someone else, am confused by your message. If it was myself you were referring to I suggest you read all my posts and the wider feminism board so you ensure you fully understand the discussion before commenting. It's always embarrassing when you post without understanding the issue, we get it, it's ok hon 👍

I don't blame you op. I don't think I could have worked for them either. Although I guess if it was a public sector organisation I may have considered it in order to make sure they were following the law correctly (for the greater good of course) and not just making it all up to suit their agenda.😱

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 22/04/2021 16:10

Well done OP.

And yet, I think someone who questions each and every policy for its relevance and makes sure it stays true to its intention are the people who SHOULD be making policy.

Not people who make policy based on an emotional basis.

If a policy cannot withstand robust review, it is a very weak policy indeed.

Trixie78 · 22/04/2021 16:16

@itsabouttimetoo

I’m really glad you turned down the job. The tone of your post is awful and it doesn’t sound like you should be writing policies at all!
Ahh you're so sweet 😘😘😘

@itsabouttimetoo

I hope you aren't in a role that's remotely connected to safeguarding if you can't see the issue with organisations deliberately failing to uphold rights as defined in the Equality Act.
