I just came out as GC at work, to the big boss and I feel a bit sick

I have NCed for this. I have just outed myself as GC in work to the big boss (and some others cced in).

I was asked to sign off on something that I just couldn't and I said so, and explained why.

I literally feel sick. Like I have put a big fat GC target on my back. My org is totally woke. I wonder how many times my response has been forwarded already.

OP posts:

However you define it, the OP’s been very brave.

Butwasitherdriveway · 17/04/2021 14:20

I don't think she has, I'm afraid.

ListeningQuietly · 17/04/2021 14:20

Sexuality is about which type of genitals you prefer to share a bed with.

It has NOTHING to do with the OP's case
where deeply misleading terminology was going to be used in a healthcare situation

Gender labelling and the aggressive TRA agenda is, as Keira Bell rightly said, homophobic and misogynistic

R0wantrees · 17/04/2021 14:28

@JustcameoutGC

It wasn't even a personal line in the sand, it for me is about the lack of assessment and management of risk (actual and reputational) around use of language in materials that would have our logo on them.

I let my personal line in the sand get trampled over long ago.

Not only is it brave, it also demonstrates professional integrity.

ANewCreation
Gender critical - recognising that a woman is an adult human female, that women and girls are discriminated against because of their biology, and that gender is primarily a tool of the patriarchy used to oppress women.

And what extraordinary times we are living in that this GC statement should be a) in any way contentious or disputed; b) someone should feel sick admitting it to their boss and c) fearful of the consequences of holding these beliefs in a woke organisation.

Well said.

Mmhm.

It's always easy to spin a belief into a positive position though isn't it.

I believe that everyone should have the right to identify how they choose and people should respect t.

When I write it like that, it's indisputable.

@JustcameoutGC

I actually didn't use the wording "coming out" (that came from sweetpetricor) I said I outed myself. I was faced with a choice, signing off on us joining the latest stonewall led initiative, or highlighting the risks inherent in doing so. I chose to do the latter, which to anyone who follows this arena would instantly signal that I am gender critical.

I didn't go into his office wearing a radicalised by mumsnet badge and asking for a quick chat.

@Butwasitherdriveway OP addressed the issue of the phase 'coming out' here (recognising that outing would have probably been the better term to use)
Butwasitherdriveway · 17/04/2021 14:50

Outing is equally as....deceitful.

GC is in no way equable to the conflict people feel in revealing they are gay.

Waitwhat23 · 17/04/2021 14:50

I'm not sure if this quote will work but in another post she acknowledged that her title and username should have read outing rather than coming out.

CardinalLolzy · 17/04/2021 14:51

That post invites a lot of comment! Let's start a new thread about that poster's belief if they want to discuss that, so we can keep this one on track about the OP.

Waitwhat23 · 17/04/2021 14:52

OK, what phrase would you have used? She was making public an opinion which would have made her own personal views clear and which might have caused problems for her at work. Outing seems to me to be a natural word to use.

Told the boss she didn't agree with it would have done.
ListeningQuietly · 17/04/2021 14:53

Tell that to Maya Forraster
Tell that to Kiera Bell

Butwasitherdriveway · 17/04/2021 14:53

So we accept that having these views makes life difficult at work?

So why are we all pretending there would never be any consequence to this?

I heard you the first time earlier on.

As you can see I was answering a direct question.

*I believe that everyone should have the right to identify how they choose and people should respect t.

When I write it like that, it's indisputable.*

In every walk of life regardless of the impact? So if every white person identified as BAME we no longer have a racial inequality problem. According to your definition, that would be fine and the black people whose oppression remains and is now not able to be spoken of will just have so suck it up won't they?

I asked my teen daughter whether she was a cervix-haver btw or whether her dad was and she did not know. The language change will mean some females miss important screening or don't know something is relevant to them. I think changes which lead to avoidable deaths should be actually discussed.

Waitwhat23 · 17/04/2021 15:05

Apologies, didn't mean to derail.

To go back to the OP's point, this may have been discussed earlier in the thread but what happened to the push for plain language, particularly in healthcare? www.healthliteracyplace.org.uk/tools-and-techniques/techniques/use-simple-language/

In that case I'd like to identify as a 68 year old eligible for a state pension and free bus pass and free prescriptions.

But the flippancy is the problem, isn't it.
Datun · 17/04/2021 15:07

Your teenage daughter didn't know whether she had a cervix?

How do you suggest she finds out? She might have a penis, a cervix, a prostate, or not.

CardinalLolzy · 17/04/2021 15:07

As I said, driveway's statement of their own beliefs invites a lot of discussion that might be suitable for its own thread. Remember that derailed threads sometimes get deleted for being derailed.

Would be interested in hearing from OP in future if there are any consequences of her actions, or hearing from others who have done similar.

These are good principles. I've seen enough poorly written documents/comms from the NHS that if I saw the word "cervices" I would have to pause to consider whether it was a typo.

Her ;)

It's your repeated comments that I am derailing which is derailing, ffs. Leave off and discuss the topic at hand as we are doing.

Are you on the wind up?

How can a teenager not know what body parts she has?
