What's with the infantilising of women's nightwear?

I was just looking for a nightdress (peri menopausal and completely unable to wear pyjamas any more because I'm so bloody hot at night Sad) on M and S (never again). I was struck by all the Disney bloody characters? I'm not 5yrs old, I don't want to wear Disney characters. Out of interest I had a look at the men's. No Disney, no cutesie stuff, just very normal (if boring) pyjamas. So what's that all about?

Non cotton is an issue pretty much in all stores. I don’t think that’s relevant. It’s not as if Disney are the only ones doing cotton nighties.

For any given size there's 11 or 12 in stock. It isn't a feminism issue if you're incredibly picky with clothes

The trousers on their women’s pyjama sets never have pockets either.

The men’s do though.

SleepingStandingUp · 09/04/2021 10:15

Pockets and no prey on the pattern

PurpleDaisies · 09/04/2021 10:28

You can buy PJs with pockets. All mine have them.

Are we really arguing that every pair of women’s pjs needs to be made of plain, pure cotton with pockets?

Beowulfa · 09/04/2021 10:41

I used to work in a cinema. Disney films are directly targeted at children, from the release dates in school holidays to the tie-in merchandise and snack deals. In recent years they've made a clear effort to make the films more appealing to adults by including some clever writing (Toy Story being a great example), but the primary market is children. So yes the inclusion of Disney characters on adult clothing is interesting.

And any evidence of a different level of choice and quality between men's and women's clothing is a feminist issue.

I'm pleased the choice of t-shirts is better these days; as a rock/metal loving teenager in pre-internet times you could only buy what was available in a men's small size, which looked ridiculous on a scrawny flat-chested 13 year old. Thanks for the tip about Last Exit To Nowhere, looks great. I also like RedBubble.

Just remembered a few years back I was on Oxford St in January trying to buy warm pjs. No preference for colour/ style, just had to be WARM, on account of it being January ie WINTER. Couldn't believe how limited the choice was, as the shops were stocked according to the marketing theory that straight after Christmas = Spring, so there was nothing but flimsy silky stuff. I think the major High St shops can be very tone deaf in this regard.

Based on nothing but my own instinct, surely there less choice for men in clothing? Whenever I’ve shopped for dh the men’s departments are smaller than women’s.

My hands, I like putting hands in my pockets, it's comforting Grin Also my phone sometimes and my lighter
MostIneptThatEverStepped · 09/04/2021 11:02

Other pyjamas are available!
Clearly M&S thinks that a portion of their demographic of shoppers like Disney on their nightwear and going by this thread, they are right!

But there are so many others to choose from.

I love this website:

Cath Kidston pyjamas have pockets

But it's so much fun for some posters to whinge about how there isn't and it gives them a chance to feel superior about all the silly "infantilised" women who do like Disney nightwear.

LibertyMole · 09/04/2021 11:24

I resent you all because I have a 34 inch inside leg so have a more restricted pyjama choice to start with.

Pyewackect · 09/04/2021 11:25

Just looked at M&S site. You must have another agenda.

This is what I'm thinking. Hmm
GoingThruTheMotions · 09/04/2021 11:33

For those that like character pajamas emp.com does 'grown up' Disney bounding, star wars etc stuff.

user64325 · 09/04/2021 11:45

I've just looked at TU after a poster swearing blind it wasn't all Disney and the first page was all Disney! 101 Dalmatians, Mickey and Minnie, Baby Yoda (in pink ofc) cutsie Easter chick, naff slogans, 2 plain pairs and then loads of hen party and bridesmaid naff pyjamas. Are people only seeing what they want to see?

It's not just pyjamas. I spent an entire Saturday morning recently looking for underwear for my 7 year old that wasn't too skimpy, too frilly, too pink, too thin, without bows and covered her bum. Doesn't exist! I have zero issue finding underwear for my son that is comfortable. The fabric is thicker and there is no uncomfortable trim on any of the boys underwear.

Surely it doesn’t matter if your pyjama bottoms are a bit on the short side?

Unless you’re one of those grim people who have posted on here in the past saying they’d be happy to host visitors while wearing their pyjamas.

AsTreesWalking · 09/04/2021 11:49

Personally, I wear men's cotton pjs.

Grimbelina · 09/04/2021 11:57

user64325 H&M do great boxer shorts for girls.

LibertyMole · 09/04/2021 11:58

I don’t want to wear cropped pyjamas. I like my whole leg to be warm.

Fortunately there are a number of companies that sell pyjamas in 34 and 36 inside legs.

TU women's nightwear.

Not a single Disney character on the first page.

I'm fairly certain if I Googled "girls' underwear" your claim would be shown as completely exaggerated too.
