What's with the infantilising of women's nightwear?

FrickfrackFeckit · 08/04/2021 18:59

I was just looking for a nightdress (peri menopausal and completely unable to wear pyjamas any more because I'm so bloody hot at night Sad) on M and S (never again). I was struck by all the Disney bloody characters? I'm not 5yrs old, I don't want to wear Disney characters. Out of interest I had a look at the men's. No Disney, no cutesie stuff, just very normal (if boring) pyjamas. So what's that all about?

The difference in look, feel, quality, coverage etc of men's and women's clothes in the same shop is stark.

I would love to wear men's clothes, tbh. But they don't fit me. Or, watches. I love chunky watches. They go in and out of fashion for women. I always look at the men's ones covetously but they just don't fit.

I have feminine stuff as well and enjoy getting done up sometimes.

I just wish there was more middle ground.

Really I can only find clothes I feel comfy in, in sportswear/ outdoors type shops.

ThatsShitTryHarder · 08/04/2021 23:30

I agree with you OP.

And it’s weird that pp said they’ve just gone on the Asda website and scrolled through 28 pages of women’s pyjamas before they got to any Disney ones.

Because 7 out of 20 on the first page I looked at were Disney.

I think there’s a big difference between saying adults shouldn’t like Disney and wondering why they do.

MissBarbary · 08/04/2021 23:32

@HopeClearwater

if you don’t like it find something else

That’s the point of the OP. There’s sweet FA else. As a pp said so eloquently, it’s Disney, granny or flammable.

That simply isn't true. Goodness knows where some of you shop and you clearly haven't mastered how to use a search engine.
LibertyMole · 08/04/2021 23:33

‘I think there’s a big difference between saying adults shouldn’t like Disney and wondering why they do.’

Adults like Disney because it is designed to appeal to both adults and children. That is why it is popular.

I find it hard to understand why an adult wouldn’t like Disney.

What shops are you talking about?

LibertyMole · 08/04/2021 23:35

There is vastly more choice for women than men, but I would still expect to be able to find female equivalents of male clothing items.

DS often wears women’s jeans and tops.

NiceGerbil · 08/04/2021 23:36

Depends what you mean by Disney, we're working through the marvel films.

Captain marvel is my favourite, seen it about 5 times!

Oh and! In the groups eg when power rangers were a thing. Someone posted to say that they usually seemed to leave the female ones off the clothes aimed at boys ..

I wondered that too. According to my husband most men's high street shops are dire and there's nothing similar to women's mid- range shops.

I've just gone to the Asda website out of curiousity at this post - the first 20 posts I got there was only one Disney, and that was Mickey Mouse.
The rest were things like Bee Happy, and a star print one (love the star print!)
Surely just shows we all get different results

@SmellsLikeWineIGuess

This thread is a total revelation.

I can’t believe so many grown adult women wear Disney / cartoon pyjamas.

YANBU - but clearly there is a massive market for childish adult-sized nightwear. Confused

I was about to say the same thing. Mind blown. I wondered who the hell bought all these designs but now I know.

I’m with you OP. Not a child. Want nice grown up non sexy comfortable PJs without bunnies on.

DietrichandDiMaggio · 08/04/2021 23:40

I'm not concerned about women's nightwear compared to men's, but I don't want bunnies or teddy bears on my clothes because I am not 4 years old, and don't understand why designers think they are appropriate for pyjamas, when they wouldn't put them on other adult clothing.

PurpleDaisies · 08/04/2021 23:41

These exist.

Everywhere.

Quaagars · 08/04/2021 23:42

They do though.

They do though. I have t shirts, jumpers and dresses with various different animals on.

Yes we all get different results but neither you nor I had to scroll through 28 pages before coming across a Disney design - we both saw them on page 1.

So yes, I think it’s weird.

LibertyMole · 08/04/2021 23:45

I suppose what it is that when you go out in the world you put on your tough exterior.

But when you are intimate with people, like your family, you reveal you are a big softie really. You like games, pretend stories, cute things, cuddling your pets and being silly.

I mean, I’d have a preference for a Marvel fan over a Harry Potter fan, but what really matters is the love of the story.

Except maybe that isn’t what everyone bases intimacy on.

ThatsShitTryHarder · 08/04/2021 23:48

Well, at least you got this bit right.

DietrichandDiMaggio · 08/04/2021 23:49

When I walk through M and S I don't see tops with teddy bears all over them, or trousers.
LibertyMole · 08/04/2021 23:51

‘Well, at least you got this bit right.’

The fact that other families are not like this just makes me happier that I am in the family I am in! Horses for courses and all that.

AlwaysLatte · 08/04/2021 23:51

I think it's more a fashion thing than infantilising. You're looking in the wrong place. The White Company has lovely nightdresses for example and not a cartoon character in sight!

Really?

It makes you more happy to behave in a certain way because other people don’t?

PurpleDaisies · 08/04/2021 23:54

When I walk through M and S I don't see tops with teddy bears all over them, or trousers.

To be fair, most PJs don’t have teddy bears all over them either.

LibertyMole · 08/04/2021 23:55

‘It makes you more happy to behave in a certain way because other people don’t?’

No, it makes me happy to be in a family where we all have things in common to enjoy. If we were like chalk and cheese it would be more difficult.

ThatsShitTryHarder · 08/04/2021 23:55

I think it’s weird to see adults wearing clothes with cartoon characters or teddies on them. I know there are people out there who like them but tbh I think they look ridiculous.

ThatsShitTryHarder · 08/04/2021 23:58

Actually LibertyMole you did say it made you happier that your family behaves in a certain way because other families aren’t like yours.
