What's with the infantilising of women's nightwear?

I was just looking for a nightdress (peri menopausal and completely unable to wear pyjamas any more because I'm so bloody hot at night Sad) on M and S (never again). I was struck by all the Disney bloody characters? I'm not 5yrs old, I don't want to wear Disney characters. Out of interest I had a look at the men's. No Disney, no cutesie stuff, just very normal (if boring) pyjamas. So what's that all about?

Pothole is there a sports topic or something you can ask on?

I can't help I'm not a runner sorry.

Quaagars · 09/04/2021 01:22

@PotholeHellhole

Does anyone have more details about where to buy running shoes for flat feet but without pink stripes on, come April 12th? Without breaking the bank?

Please don't say google, because I really need to try shoes on. Grin My usual port of call was Sports Direct, but they treat their staff badly, and also I always ended up with only two non-pink pairs of shoes to choose from.

Wyndsors World of Shoes, they usually have a great choice.

The men in my work wear t-shirts with superheroes, retro stuff eg star wars all the time.

No one thinks anything of it.

I think it's different for women. For a start female designed clothes are often cut in a very different way.

Also I think they are read in s different way.

A man in a t-shirt with the original star wars poster on is just saying I like star wars.

A grown woman in a hello kitty t-shirt gets a different judgement.

And it would be unusual for a man to wear a hello kitty t-shirt. I suspect it would be seen as 'pretty cool' though.

I just remembered something. There's a thing I found v funny on Facebook. They sold t-shirts. They were the bloke sort of shape.

I'm short and booby so they don't fit at all.

I got in touch and said hello your thing is brilliant! If I pay extra please can I have one with it printed on, on one from your supplier?

He said no, these are unisex.

And obviously that's up to him so fine but it was a shame.

Because they're not unisex, are they. For lots of women.

I do too. Why is it different though?

Must admit, this is one of the things that pisses me off though.
If I want a Star Wars or super heroes top, why do I have to buy from the mens section and get a baggy T?
Can we not have fitted women's tops too?
I do wear superhero, Star Wars stuff all the time but I have to be content with a baggy man's t-shirt.

duffmcstockings · 09/04/2021 02:06

Personally I wear a old vest, but you are right, little girl tops have prey on them, dear, rabbit etc. Little boy jammies have dinosaurs, lions etc. And that bleeds into women's pyjamas. I definitely don't want eyor on my pyjamas. Too passive.

duffmcstockings · 09/04/2021 02:11

It's absolutely a feminist issue. Not the biggest or the most important. But still something that keeps women lesser than men. We can start with the micro aggressions.

LibertyMole · 09/04/2021 02:35

Why on earth would we start with micro aggressions?

We should start with the macroagressions.

Anyway, it isn’t less to wear snoopy pyjamas. It is less to feel that you can’t wear them. It I s a natural human instinct to feel warmly towards cute things, and we do as a society try and train men out of those instincts. There’s always the assumption on these threads that feminine things are somehow worse than masculine things.

Nice Gerbil, I agree that we do judge other people on their clothes. I sometimes think people look ridiculous, awful etc over trivial clothes’ choices and while it isn’t my best personality trait, I’m okay with it.

Quaagars, please look at Last Exit to Nowhere. I think you will enjoy it.

OP, thanks for starting this interesting thread. I was very stressed and it has kept me occupied.

Quaagars · 09/04/2021 02:48

@LibertyMole

Just had to google Last Exit To Nowhere, as hadn't heard of before.
Would wear most of those tees!

LibertyMole · 09/04/2021 02:51

My sister wears them and gets compliments all the time, especially on the Alien ones.

NiceGerbil · 09/04/2021 02:55

The thing about the difference in skimpiness in clothes for pre pubescent children..?

LibertyMole · 09/04/2021 03:00

There are slogans and styles of boys’ and girls clothes which are gender stereotyped in negative ways. There are overly sexualised styles of girls’ clothing and overly aggressive styles of boys’ clothing.

I am not making any comment on them being equally bad or one being worse, just saying I have an issue with both.

caramellia · 09/04/2021 03:07

@LibertyMole a school I saw recently showing off their new progressive uniform, it was still girls in short tight skirts or leggings and boys in baggy shorts and normal joggers. Overall I thought was better uniform but there was still a big divide between girls and boys. It's Flakefleet school in fleetwood I would be interested in hearing your Opinion if you ever see the news article photos

@Quaagars You don’t. Primark do loads of women’s Star Wars/superhero clothes.

As fo Gap, EMP, TruffleShuffle, Character etc.

I don’t know where this exclusively pink sports direct is but again, I don’t recognise that description.

Look at the women’s running shoe section here:
www.sportsdirect.com/running/running-shoes/ladies-running-shoes

I usually buy mine from a specialist running shop at sale time or a designer outlet place.

Justhadathought · 09/04/2021 09:00

I think this is a strange thread to be in the FWR section. If people just want to talk about pyjamas and nightdress choices then surely there is a better place for it?

This board exists, primarily, for people who want to pose questions about choices; and who want to think a little more deeply or analytically about matters.

Sillyduckseverywhere · 09/04/2021 09:00

I agree.
Luckily I'm firmly in the "sexy" nightwear category.
I hate pastels, cartoons and flowery stuff.

That’s actually a really good point @LibertyMole

UsedUpUsername · 09/04/2021 09:30

@FrickfrackFeckit

So the women get Bambi and Dumbo and the men get Iron Man and Darth Vader? No, it's definitely not a feminist issue. Definitely not, I really feel put in my place now Hmm
Is this a joke? They are obviously both incredibly infantile 🙄
notagainmummy · 09/04/2021 09:31

I've seen nightmare to suit every taste. No idea what your point is.

Well, cats are carnivores, so there’s that 😵
daisypond · 09/04/2021 09:35

I’ve looked at every piece of women’s nightwear on Asda and M&S and there is not one thing on either that I want. They are either too cutesy, with characters or slogans, floral, checked, ditsy prints, non-cotton.

PurpleDaisies · 09/04/2021 09:38

Non cotton is an issue pretty much in all stores. I don’t think that’s relevant. It’s not as if Disney are the only ones doing cotton nighties.

Fembot123 · 09/04/2021 09:39

They are horrendous but there’s obviously a market for it.

DenisetheMenace · 09/04/2021 09:42

Agree with you. I want a plain, comfortable, traditional pair. Impossible to find for a reasonable price.

CirqueDeMorgue · 09/04/2021 09:42

Tbh, some of you need to be a bit more open minded about where you shop. It's easy to find fitted superhero t-shirts online, for example.
