California prisons begin moving hundreds of transgender women requesting transfer under new law

Archived version archive.md/9T3zo#selection-1983.9-1983.104

I know we've talked a lot already about prisons, but this just makes me sick. Those poor women :(

From the article:

But more than two hours away, at the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla, there’s fear. Inmates say guards have warned them that “men are coming” and to expect sexual violence.

“That if we think it’s bad now, be prepared for the worst. That it’s going to be off the hook, it’s going to be jumping,” Tomiekia Johnson, 41, said staffers have told her. “They say we’re going to need a facility that’s going to be like a maternity ward. They say we’re going to have an inmate program where inmates become nannies.” Hmm

Any women showing concern are 'transphobic' and need to be ''educated''.

Although advocates and inmates say the transfers have been received well, several claim that misinformation spread by prison staffers is stirring up transphobia and that more must be done to educate inmates.

Transwomen need and deserve to be kept safe too, that should go without saying, but putting one vulnerable group in danger to keep another safe is not the answer. Predators absolutely will exploit this.

I hope a class action lawsuit is on the horizon, but how many women will have to be harmed before it comes to that?

That's awful Angry

Magnificentmug12 · 07/04/2021 11:51

So sad!!

MrsMidClegs · 07/04/2021 11:54

This is absolutely appalling.

Heather Mason has spoken about this from her first-hand experience and has written about this here: www.womenarehuman.com/the-alarm-has-been-sounded-whos-going-to-respond/

AssassinatedBeauty · 07/04/2021 11:55

It is so so wrong to put male bodied people in to a closed environment with women and expect them to share close quarters. Inevitably there will be attacks on women, let alone the loss of privacy and dignity.

yourhairiswinterfire · 07/04/2021 12:05

Should have added, that of course no amount of money can undo the trauma of being raped or sexually assaulted. It's likely that the majority of these female inmates have already experienced this kind of trauma in the past. Prevention is way better than cure, suing will bring little comfort.

I think the statements highlighted in OP just prove how little women are thought of. Instead of working on solutions that keep everyone safe and comfortable, women have just been completely dismissed and it's been accepted that sexual assault, rape and pregnancies are inevitable.

It's not good enough. I'm heartbroken.

Andrew Sullivan tweeted: A humane but risky experiment whose results we will soon see.

Then To clarify in this no-win debate. It’s meant to be humane to trans women. But it could be very dangerous for women. We’ll see.

''Humane'' Angry

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 07/04/2021 12:06

It's fucking inhumane!!!! How have we got to this point?!

Helmetbymidnight · 07/04/2021 12:07

That he used the word 'humane' says so much about how he - and all of them - view women.

This is terrible for the imprisoned women of California.

RoyalCorgi · 07/04/2021 12:10

Men like Sullivan just hate women. He can't even be bothered to disguise it any more.

Helleofabore · 07/04/2021 12:11

Andrew Sullivan, only tweeted that after so many women pointed out his rank hypocrisy in calling this a ‘humane’ experiment while standing by their tweet last year condemning anyone ‘calling’ a transgirl a male as ‘callous and hurtful’ regarding the court case of transgirls running against girls.

I wouldn’t trust his correction. His first tweet is a more reliable take .

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 07/04/2021 12:15

It's truly astonishing how confident so many people are that they will never end up on the wrong side of a truly byzantine justice system and suddenly discover abstract notions are their daily reality.

I've never understood why so many people consider those in prison to have lost their humanity the moment they are first interviewed for an offence.

MoltenLasagne · 07/04/2021 12:16

Fucking hell, women truly are just the support humans to men aren't they? With those numbers WHY can there not be a separate transwomen's facility or wing within the male estate?

Tealightsandd · 07/04/2021 12:19

This is sickening. Pretty much State sanctioned sexual assault.

I feel sorry for the poor children who will be born as a result of their mothers being raped.

yourhairiswinterfire · 07/04/2021 12:21

With those numbers WHY can there not be a separate transwomen's facility or wing within the male estate?

They could use the money they'll apparently need to make a maternity facility in the women's prison and spend it on making transgender accommodation in the appropriate prisons instead. But no, that option seems too far fetched for some reason. Probably ''inhumane'' or something Hmm

YouWerePrettyIWasLonely · 07/04/2021 12:23

A cynical part of me reckons they will put the women on some sort of contraception to cover up the rapes. Will there be a high number of them being diagnosed with menstrual issues and having an iud fitted?

MoltenLasagne · 07/04/2021 12:24

I know it's not a war scenario but surely the fact this is against the Geneva convention should maybe flag what an absolutely awful idea this is...

ErrolTheDragon · 07/04/2021 12:27

Humane?

Yet another example of man's inhumanity to women.Hmm

MichelleofzeResistance · 07/04/2021 12:32

Educate women into what? That being afraid of and experiencing sexual harassment and assault is a necessary thing to suck up to be sufficiently humane to TW? To be ok with being treated like this? Or educated that to dare show any protest is likely to end very badly for them?

That TW are the VIPs of womanhood and everyone else's focus and priority at all times must be TW and never themselves?

This isn't using female people as support humans, it's using them as nothing more than objects the real humans are entitled to have. And the objects must be educated out of any beliefs about their own rights, needs, identities, issues.

Whatever happens to women in this experiment, it's apparently worth it if TW prisoners have a more humane experience.

And then we wonder why thousands of girls are desperate to identify out of having to be a woman.

IDontOnlyLikeJazzFunk · 07/04/2021 12:33

This is just unbelievable. I'm not sure what logic failure has caused the trans person being interviewed about their forthcoming move to a female facility to think that no predators are going to take advantage of this?

They know applications are on a self-id basis, who knows what 'checks' they can do to verify this - I imagine they will err on the safe of side not refusing anyone to prevent lawsuits from failed applicants. So absolutely zero gatekeeping seems possible.

Apparently this person speaks for all transwomen and people who claim to be transwomen when they say that 'they have no plans to be predatory'.

Words fail me - I can't honestly imagine what is going through the minds of the people putting these rules in place.

IDontOnlyLikeJazzFunk · 07/04/2021 12:37

Exactly. I'm sure there are quite a few people in prison that never expected to be there.

I am a very law abiding citizen but I recognise that a) events can take an unexpected turn and b) there is a such a thing as a miscarriage of justice where totally innocent people get locked up or shot (thinking of Jean Charles Menezes) - here in the UK!

MichelleofzeResistance · 07/04/2021 12:38

The utter lack of interest in the experience or needs of women prisoners is just..... mindblowing.

Its all about what trans prisoners want and demand and expect of the women in the facilities they are turning mixed sex.

The impact of that upon women..... well it's not as if they have any existence beyond what they provide for others is it? Silly thoughts about themselves and silly fears..... rubbish. Not important. Since it doesn't affect the real people.

I seriously wonder what the body count of harm to women is going to have to be before this is properly looked into. Animals get treated with more consideration and care than this.

Whatwouldscullydo · 07/04/2021 12:38

This just makes me so Sad and Angry

If we want to talk about the most vulnerable In society , women in.prison would be it.

Aren't indigenous women over represented in prison like In prostitution?

They know full well, educationally, financially , back ground wise, resource wise and support wise there's fuck all they can do about it.

Its just undescribable how sick twisted and upsetting this all.is.

yourhairiswinterfire · 07/04/2021 12:39

I can't honestly imagine what is going through the minds of the people putting these rules in place.

We know what's not going through their minds-the safety and human rights of women.

A cynical part of me reckons they will put the women on some sort of contraception to cover up the rapes

When the inevitable happens, who do the women turn to? Do they have to rely on the very same people that allowed their sexual assault/rape to happen to help them? Can the people allowing this be trusted to be honest?

OP posts:
Tealightsandd · 07/04/2021 12:39

Wouldn't it make sense to have separate trans facilities so that they get care and support based on specific needs including medical? The standard women's prison won't have that expertise or experience. It's failing trans people to dump them in non specialist facilities.

JellySlice · 07/04/2021 12:39

But Jen Orthwein, an attorney who represents transgender inmates and worked on the bill, said that ... “any expression of femininity in a men’s prison places people in danger.”

Yet again, men's violence is made women's problem to solve.

Hmm
Ninkanink · 07/04/2021 12:41

Not only that but women must be sacrificed to protect men.
