"Alba … appears to be a home for those who fear that gender self-identification for trans people poses a threat to women's rights."

MissBarbary:Do you really think support for Salmond and Alba is going to be based on his support for women's rights and his opposition to self ID?

I think support for Alba would be based on the effectiveness of its campaigns for women’s rights and against self-ID, rather than what people thought about Salmond’s personal commitment.

I don't. I think support for Alba will be based on whether it is perceived as useful in delivering separatism. After all that's what Salmond is punting it for - list candidates only to bolster the separatists in list seats.

I very much doubt being "gender critical" and supporting women's rights play any part in that. And I agree with the other posters who are sceptical at pinning women's rights on a party headed up by Salmond.

weebarra · 28/03/2021 15:24

Well, I was having huge difficulty thinking who to vote for so it might be an option.
What's awful is that I always vote, for every election, even local cooncil ones, and this is the first time since I was able to that I've considered not voting.

ArabellaScott · 28/03/2021 15:27

Hm. This could be interesting. It may well temper the SNP's refusal to listen on the subject of women's rights.

GintyMcGinty · 28/03/2021 15:35

I don't know how anyone can call themselves a feminist and vote for the party of Alex Salmond and Neale Hanvey.

DisgustedofManchester · 28/03/2021 15:35

Salmond appologised to one woman to stop her pressing charges I believe. If you think that trans women are more of a threat than creepy men politicians then you should check out the news on politicians and sexual harassment and assaults vs trans women. I know who'd I feel safer with.

ArabellaScott · 28/03/2021 15:37

All of this affected by our god-awful Dehondt (?) system. which seems to encourage you to vote for whomever you don't want to win.

Tamingofthehamster · 28/03/2021 15:40

It all feels very trump-like. Vote for the sleazy ma that may protect women’s rights or vote the less sleazy option that will throw them away.

I've said it several times on this board- the proclaimed feminist Joanna Cherry supports Salmond. She was calling for his reinstatement the minute the trial was over.
BlackForestCake · 28/03/2021 15:51

The SNP Women's Convenor, Caroline McAllister, has defected to Alba.

Sorry but so what?

EachDubh · 28/03/2021 16:03

No one would argue that Joanna Cherry doesn't stand for womens' rights. I am keen to see what her next moves are. I havr a lot of faith in Joanna.

I was responding to your post- how can a feminist vote for a party headed by Salmond?

I've given you an example of a feminist who supports Salmond. Whether she'll jump ship to his party isn't known but she claims to be a feminist yet supports him.

I think independence would be a disaster so I won't vote Alba anyway.

ImpatiensI · 28/03/2021 16:28

I'm not in Scotland so wouldn't be able to vote for Alba anyway. I'd take heart from any party highlighting a move away from the toxic trans activist agenda.

Babdoc · 28/03/2021 16:38

A vote for Alba is a vote to tear the UK apart and risk Scotland becoming a bankrupt woke banana republic. Where the SNP would still be the majority party, and would have carte blanche to destroy women’s rights. Alba would never get a majority themselves.
I will be voting Conservative, to keep Scotland in the UK and to oppose the attack on free speech (Hate Crime bill) and women’s rights (self ID being pushed through under the SNP).

howard97A · 28/03/2021 16:44

I misunderstood your first post, Miss Barbary,. I thought you were simply suggesting that GC voters would not vote for a pro-GC Alba if they doubted the strength of Salmond’s personal commitment to supporting women’s rights and opposing self-ID.

I think that many GC Scots- even sceptical ones - might feel that voting for a separatist Alba might be a better option than voting for a woke, transactivist SNP or not voting at all.

I think you are hugely over- estimating how much the voters and Salmond care about being "gender- critical"

If they vote for the Ecksit party the driving force is "freedom".

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 28/03/2021 17:00

There is a regional list system. So if you are in one of the regions where Alex Salmond is not on your list, you can vote for Alba without being in danger of him being back in the Scottish Parliament.

You could choose Tommy Sheridan instead!
MissBarbary · 28/03/2021 17:40

Tommy Sheridan- what a completely vile person.

Igneococcus · 29/03/2021 07:36

Times article about Alba setting their sights on women:

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/e614e7ec-900d-11eb-930d-e9e6e3751f8f?shareToken=27c5464bd8c7a2d59ab959c788cce128

They are talking about "gender proofing" their policies, not "sex" proofing them though.

Tibtom · 29/03/2021 10:09

Remember which way all these ex snp have been voting up to now on this issue.

ArabellaScott · 29/03/2021 10:12

Women's rights being used as a political football. This is going to be a messy election
