English teacher tells class that JKR is transphobic

Just that really.
I'm absolutely fuming.
30 kids now "hate" JKR apparently.
This is an abuse of influence surely, not to mention a worrying lack of critical thinking.
I've printed out the "transphobic" tweets so my Y7 child can make up their own mind. With a lot of ranting from me in the background Angry.

I would get straight on to the school and complain - do it from an anonymous email if you must but it must be addressed - this teacher is engaging in toxic rhetoric to their class and it is damaging to children - just like this whole movement of pushing children to think they are in the wrong bodies.

nauticant · 26/03/2021 10:59

Please would you quote things JKR has said herself that are "transphobic" Shizuku?

JKR's own words. Not the words of others making claims about how they interpret what she meant.

Thanks.

SunsetBeetch · 26/03/2021 11:04

" You said this, but I know what you really meant." is such an abusers' tactic.

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 26/03/2021 11:09

Here's a detailed analysis of the alleged transphobia

I remember reading that at the time.
Making accusations isn't evidence that the accusation is true.
Misrepresenting what JKR said, and claiming she meant something she didn't actually say and then condemning them for it, isn't 'analysis'.
The good news though is that more and more people are seeing through this nonsense. I'm sick of seeing women condemned for things they have never said and do not mean. Its nothing but sexism writ large.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/03/2021 11:17

Here's a detailed analysis of the alleged transphobia:

It's a poorly written and in many places inaccurate blog by a person who doesn't like it when women have their own opinions about things which affect them.

But I agree it would be good as part of a study of bias around this issue, like I did in GCSE history as I mentioned upthread.

Perhaps the teacher can spend the next class going through a few other beloved authors and encouraging children to boycott their reading. Because children should only read work from ideologically acceptable authors, of course.

Kipling, David Walliams, Roald Dahl, Dr Seuss, Enid Blyton...

They can save all the evil books up for bonfire night. Very wholesome. Much normal.

InspiralCoalescenceRingdown · 26/03/2021 11:23

However, the simple fact remains: Just as homosexuals decide what’s homophobic, so do trans people decide what’s transphobic.

You posting on Mumsnet is homophobic. Do better.

Is that how it works?

Like a gay person previously perceived as straight coming out. Is that sudden onset gay?

And inevitably, we get to some real homophobia.

Helmetbymidnight · 26/03/2021 11:25

As for AA Milne and Kenneth Graham - awful.

The privileged arrogant Toad commits driving offences then dresses up as woman so not only transphobic but transpeciesphobic to escape from prison. If that's not a dog-whistle, I don't know what is.

DodoPatrol · 26/03/2021 11:26

It’s really not ‘transphobic’ to know that transgender people remain their birth sex. It’s in the definition. If they weren’t their birth sex, they wouldn’t be transgender.

Shizuku · 26/03/2021 11:26
@Shizuku
You can also stop trying to tell women who have had children and who are quite aware of what biology is that we are wrong. Your ideological beliefs have no magical power here. Again I will ask you, do you have children? I don’t think you have the slightest understanding of biology, science or safeguarding and you are wilfully trying to break down the safeguarding barriers by vilifying a woman who is talking about her concerns.
As if I'm going to discuss my family with you.

My understanding of biology is derived from actual scientists who, en mass, say that sex differentiation is extremely complex.

BigFatLiar · 26/03/2021 11:27

Apart from the comments about JKR I'd be complaining that she ought to be teaching english and not this nonsense.

Lots of writers didn't exactly have 'nice' lifestyles yet we don't ban them.

Teachers are entitled to their opinion but should teach their subject. You could ask if her views as expressed in class represent the teachings of the education authorities in line with the syllabus (though these days it may well do).

Marmaladeagain · 26/03/2021 11:30

I would contact the local education authority and make an official complaint and copy the school into it.

Wouldn't beat about the bush - our country thrives on freedom of speech.

In Germany children are not allowed to be home educated as they have the right to outside influences in their life etc. I think that is a very good idea. Should be exposed to as many ideas and thinking as possible.

To leave the house and attend school and have a teacher behave like a parent trying to indoctrinate a child into their way of thinking is appalling. All ideas on balance to be presented - but this is the political hot potato and indoctrination is not too strong a word when teachers are telling children lies like this.

Gerla · 26/03/2021 11:30

Funny how you always seem to think that "actual" scientists might know more about sex and reproduction than women who have actually had children do! My advice is to get off the internet and start living in the real world - you will always be able to find something online to support your view but nothing beats living for a few decades as a woman to really understand that sex is real.

Gerla · 26/03/2021 11:30

Sorry that was directed to @Shizuku

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 26/03/2021 11:30

How is "Stark" a pun? Are you getting it mixed up with "Strike"?

Yup,

nauticant · 26/03/2021 11:39

My understanding of biology is derived from actual scientists who, en mass, say that sex differentiation is extremely complex.

Scientists say that gravity is extremely complex. Possibly so complex that a true understanding of gravity will never be achieved. However, gravity operates both at the extremely complex level but also at the day to day level. People are able to lead lives having an understanding of gravity that works. Vast civil engineering projects go ahead without gravity's extreme complexity needing to be considered for a moment.

People have understood sex in a way that has worked for millennia, possibly from before the dawn of civilisation. The idea that now it's beyond the grasp of people for whom it works day to day is simply argumental chaff thrown up to set people off down blind alleys.

Oh I really wish I hadn't seen that spoiler. Sad

Wandawomble · 26/03/2021 11:45

Poor Shizuku, you have family members but you don’t seem to understand where they came from!
Maybe you can ask your mummy to tell you how babies are made.

I know right?!
lifeturnsonadime · 26/03/2021 11:47

marmaladeagain whilst I agree with most of what you say i don't agree with your comments on home education.

Not all children suit standardised education and parents should have the right to educate their children in a way that best suits them.

My kids really suffered at school due to SEN.

My 11 year old daughter is a massive Harry Potter fan and picked up on this transphobia thing from a you tube video. She was really upset with me when I tried to explain that JKR isn't transphobic. I've decided to leave the conversation for now. These people poisoning young children in this way ought to be ashamed of themselves. It's awful really.

Cowbells · 26/03/2021 11:50

I've yet to meet someone who calls JKR transphobic who has actually read what she has written on the subject of trans rights and women's rights. JKR is not transphobic so there is no evidence to prove she is.

Wandawomble · 26/03/2021 11:54

@Shizuku please can you quote directly from JKR where she says transphobic things?

TheBuffster · 26/03/2021 11:54

What is particularly bizarre is that whilst HP is being denounced left right and centre, friends is having a revival with young people at the moment.
I'm pretty sure all the jokes about Chandler's dad are much more transphobic than anything else J K has said.
Yet Primark and co seem to be doing a roaring trade in things with the friends logo slapped on them.
Personally I think Friends T shirts are like the Nirvana T shirts- only cool if yours is an original.
But then I am probably a grumpy old woman. In the traditional sense of the word.

Gerla · 26/03/2021 12:01

@Wandawomble You won't get an answer, I'm afraid - at most, just a link to something else and an avoidance of any difficult questions.
