So under roles and responsibilities

• Treat all Transgender and Non-Binary Participants with dignity and respect;
• Welcome all Transgender and Non-Binary Participants just as you would any other attendee or
member;
• Accept all Participants in the gender they present; verification of their identity should be no more
than expected of any other person

• If asked, explain that there are no restrictions for Transgender and Non-Binary Participants
taking part in Recreational Activity;
• Respect the private and confidential nature of all Transgender and Non-Binary Participants’
situations;
• Take your lead from the Participant, ask their name and use it;
• Support the Transgender or Non-Binary Participant with their choice of changing facilities;
• Report any incidents of inappropriate or offensive behaviour and language to the British Cycling
Integrity and Compliance Department;
• Avoid making assumptions about the Participant, take your lead from the information they may,
or may not, offer you
• Be clear about what language you use, all Participants should be referred to as the gender that they inform you they are

So women, it's pronouns all the way or you're out.

Time for a women in cycling policy?

As former Director of Sport at Stonewall, Robbie has extensive experience of supporting sport bodies in the UK to embrace more inclusive cultures, embedding LGBT+ inclusion within intersectional approaches.

Philippa York
Philippa York was born and educated in Glasgow, and almost trained to be an engineer before discovering cycling at the age of 16. She was able to compete at the highest level in Europe for nearly 16 years, and after retiring from cycling she took up Tae Kwon Do to learn something very different – and reached 2nd degree black belt, though it did take 13 years of trying. Philippa has a son and a daughter, both grown up, and a partner of more than 25 years. She currently lives in Dorset and sometimes writes or commentates on cycling for various outlets, does a bit of human rights work and if it's reasonable weather rides her bike – but not too fast or too far.

You may know Phillipa under a different name en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippa_York

Pippa York is a former Tour de France rider who transitioned.

There's a reason that Philippa was able to "compete at the highest level in Europe for nearly 16 years", but I probably can't mention what it is.

yep! ditto there's a reason I didnt mention who Pippa was formerly known as

Most people would be fine with the vast majority of things on that list except this
Support the Transgender or Non-Binary Participant with their choice of changing facilities

everyone on that group is equally culpable for deciding that women and girls rights to single sex changing isnt important

Quadzilla · 25/03/2021 16:39

I feels very straingly that trans and NB people should be welcomed and encouraged into our sport but women and girls right to compete against their own sex should be upheld.

Although that said, it's not just competitive cycling that is affected by this policy. British Cycling's initiative to encourage more women to cycle recreationally (called Breeze) is advertised as women only. In reality it is now a mixed sex initiative. How they can say women need women only rides to encourage them to cycle then make them mixed sex, I've no idea.

Genuine question - which race does the non binary person enter? Surely there has to be a special category created.

Is this a consultation? Or is it that the policy has been published and is final?

I remember you posting about this Quadzilla and British Cycling's response to you

Sport's bodies are going to lose volunteers over this. It's all very well pontificating about this from on high but at the grassroots level, the hassle this will cause especially amongst youth sports will be a nightmare.

The sports club I used to chair had 2 changing rooms, male and female and both were completely open plan, no cubicles because like many sports pavilions it was built years ago. I dont know how we would have accommodated people who are clearly male but identify as female and want to use the female changing rooms

From their policy

"A sport is a gender-affected sport if the physical strength, stamina or physique of average persons of one gender would put them at a disadvantage to average persons ofthe other gender as competitors in events involving the sport."

By allowing transgirls/transwomen to compete against women, would definitely put all the women at a disadvantage.
Elite sport is not about "average" persons.

The Facebook post I saw it on talked about the consultation but only had the link to the policy. I did not have time to search for the consultation so thank you for the link. There was a comment on the Facebook post pointing out that they won't get many people completing the consultation if they don't have the link to the actual consultation, the cynic in me wonders if that is the aim!

IT'S AN ACTUAL CONSULTATION OF MEMBERS!

The new CEO is from Rugby Union so perhaps he's listening to us (finally).

was he CEO at the RFU when they decided that despite what World Rugby said about male people not playing on female teams, they would ignore that?

Quadzilla · 25/03/2021 16:59

Kit I think he was in charge of a RU club rather than the RFU

Well that's not great for young women and girls trying to compete in cycling.

How do we become members so we can complete the consultation?

I wonder if Fair Play for Women will pick this up?

No need to be a member:

We are consulting widely in a large-scale representative survey. Members, non-members, staff, volunteers, external partners and identified groups, including but not limited to, Stonewall, Gendered Intelligence, Mermaids, Fair Play For Women, Women in Sport and the Women’s Sport Trust.

If you look at the news piece it says Fair Play for Women are one of the consultees. I’ve had a quick look at the consultation form, I’m not sure you have to be a member to fill it in. I’m sure Stonewall will be sending it to their mailing list.
