Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Jolene, and other anti-feminist anthems

Just to say this is a light-hearted chat thread.
I love jolene, sing it with a minor adaptation every time I'm cleaning the windows. I have no idea about the background, but it must come near the top of the least feminist songs ever!
Another which I've just heard is sheryl crow, strong enough. "lie to me, I promise I'll believe, lie to me, but please don't leave"
Brilliant song, awful lyrics :)
Any others?

Great idea for a thread Op
I am loving it

AlpiniPraline · 21/03/2021 08:56

Might have already been mentioned but....

I don't like it when you break me honey
Why'd you have to do that?
Tell me when you'll make these tears keep falling
Do you feel like a man?
Figure, figure there's no working you out whatsoever
Only one way I can sum you up altogether
You got a black heart
Daddy I've fallen for a monster
Somehow he's scaring me to death
He's big and bad
I love him like mad
Momma, he's the best I ever had
Daddy I've fallen for a monster
He got a black heart
No walls to build around me honey
'Cause you blew my house down
Sticks and stones won't put it back up for me
And that's where we're at now
Sicker, sicker, I ain't feeling your mouth whatsoever
Naming hurts me more than weight thrown around but whatever
You got a black heart
Daddy I've fallen for a monster
Somehow he's scaring me to death
He's big and bad
I love him like mad
Momma, he's the best I ever had
Daddy I've fallen for a monster
He got a black heart
Daddy I've fallen for a monster
Somehow he's scaring me to death
He's big and bad
I love him like mad
Momma, he's the best I ever had
Daddy I've fallen for a monster
He got a black heart
He got a black heart
He got such a dirty black heart in him
I love him like mad
Oh, yes I do
He got a black heart

@Bluntness100

Well I guess in that creepy vein...

You're so hot, teasing me
So you're blue but I can't take a chance on a chick like you
That's something I couldn't do
There's that look in your eyes
I can read in your face that your feelings are driving you wild
Ah, but girl you're only a child
Well, I can dance with you honey
If you think it's funny
Does your mother know that you're out
And I can chat with you baby
Flirt a little maybe
Does your mother know that you're out
Take it easy (Take it easy)
Better slow down girl
That's no way to go
Does your mother know
Take it easy (Take it easy)
Try to cool it girl
Take it nice and slow
Does your mother know
I can see what you want
But you seem pretty young to be searching for that kind of fun
So maybe I'm not the one
Now you're so cute, I like your style
And I know what you mean when you
Give me a flash of that smile (Smile)
But girl you're only a child
Well, I can dance with you honey
If you think it's funny
Does your mother know that you're out
And I can chat with you baby
Flirt a little maybe
Does your mother know that you're out
Take it easy (Take it easy)
Better slow down girl
That's no way to go
Does your mother know
Take it easy (Take it easy)
Try to cool it girl
Take it nice and slow
Does your mother know
Well, I can dance with you honey
If you think it's funny
Does your mother know that you're out
And I can chat with you baby
Flirt a little maybe
Does your mother know that you're out
Well, I can dance with you honey
If you think it's funny
Does your mother know that you're out
And I can chat with you baby
Flirt a little maybe
Does your mother know that you're out
Well, I can dance with you honey
If you think it's funny
Does your mother know that you're out

Is this one so bad? The guy makes it clear that he isn't going to do anything with the girl.

I always took it as a guy in his 20s in a club being chatted up by a 15 or 16 year old. He's willing to have a dance with her and flirt with her a bit if it makes her happy but he isn't going to take things any further.

I always thought it was a pretty responsible song!

Bluntness100 · 21/03/2021 09:00

I always thought it was a pretty responsible song!

Depends if you find an adult saying a child is hot and teasing them and they will flirt with them ok.?

For me it’s a no.

EdgeOfACoin · 21/03/2021 09:03

Funnily enough, ABBA also have a song about a student kissing her teacher in a geometry class.

The song is told from the POV of the student who initiated the kiss. We're not told much about the teacher's reaction (or about the later consequences).

I've never been entirely sure what to make of that one!

TheBeardedVulture · 21/03/2021 09:04

There’s a metal version of Jolene where they’ve changed the lyrics and Jolene is now some terrifying and unknownable entity that needs to be appeased before she destroys everything.

EdgeOfACoin · 21/03/2021 09:05

Maybe it depends on the age of the girl? Flirting with a sixteen-year-old is different from flirting with a thirteen-year-old.

We aren't told the age of the girl. Just that the guy thinks she's too young to be out picking up guys for sex.

Nearlynotquite · 21/03/2021 09:06

Going back Jolene, it came on the radio when I was being pursued by a married man, and was really tempted. It put me straight very quickly, so I think it's worth it for that.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/03/2021 09:13

The ABBA song is better than 'don't stand so close to me' at least.

LunaNorth · 21/03/2021 09:13

A lovely little ditty by the Beatles...

Well, I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or I won't know where I am
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand, little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end, little girl
Well, you know that I'm a wicked guy
And I was born with a jealous mind
And I can't spend my whole life
Trying just to make you toe the line
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand, little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end, little girl
Let this be a sermon
I mean everything I've said
Baby, I'm determined
And I'd rather see you dead
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand, little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end, little girl
I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or you won't know where I am
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand, little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end, little girl
Na, na, na
Na, na, na
Na, na, na
Na, na, na

Ninkanink · 21/03/2021 09:14

ABBAs song is completely different.

He is looking out for her.

KizzyWayfarer · 21/03/2021 09:15

There’s a Lily Allen song which is about a woman sad about her rubbish life, single at the advanced age of ‘nearly 30’, and the chorus is “It's sad, but it's true how society says her life is already over”
Maybe it’s meant to be ironic, but it just comes across as WTF.

changingnames786 · 21/03/2021 09:19

@KizzyWayfarer I think a lot of women feel like that though (not saying they should) and she's literally addressing in the song that it shouldn't be that way. You only need to see some of threads on here to see some of the pressure women feel if they are turning 30 single. So I think it's a mirror to society rather than condoning it.

ItsLateHumpty · 21/03/2021 09:21

WAP is reported by some to be the epitome of female empowerment. I don’t see it at all. I think it’s crude and the lyrics are horrible.

If I’m missing the point, I’d love someone to explain it to me.

I’m not going to post the whole song, this is enough:

Look, I need a hard hitter, I need a deep stroker
I need a Henny drinker, I need a weed smoker
Not a garden snake, I need a king cobra
With a hook in it, hope it lean over
He got some money, then that's where I'm headed
Pussy A1, just like his credit
He got a beard, well, I'm tryna wet it
I let him taste it, now he diabetic
I don't wanna spit, I wanna gulp
I wanna gag, I wanna choke
I want you to touch that lil' dangly thing
That swing in the back of my throat

So not a guilty feminist pleasure, sorry OP but I’ll post that separately.

Ninkanink · 21/03/2021 09:21

It’s commentary on society’s views of femalehood. I don’t see the problem with that at all! It’s feminist to talk about it.

We can’t just listen to happy ditties all the time...

Same for other songs like ‘will you still love me tomorrow’ - nothing wrong with that one either. These are real things that people (especially young women) do have to consider.

sleveen · 21/03/2021 09:21

@trappedsincesundaymorn

I'm just going to leave this here...a truly vile song.

Father Figure
George Michael
That's all I wanted
Something special, something sacred
In your eyes
For just one moment
To be bold and naked
At your side
Sometimes I think that you'll never
Understand me
Maybe this time is forever
Say it can be, whoa
That's all you wanted
Something special, someone sacred
In your life
Just for one moment
To be warm and naked
At my side
Sometimes I think that you'll never
Understand me
But something tells me together
We'd be happy, oh oh
I will be your father figure
(Oh baby)
Put your tiny hand in mine
(I'd love to)
I will be your preacher teacher
(Be your daddy)
Anything you have in mind
(It would make me)
I will be your father figure
(Very happy)
I have had enough of crime
(Please let me)
I will be the one who loves you
'Til the end of time
That's all I wanted
But sometimes love can be mistaken
For a crime
That's all I wanted
Just to see my baby's
Blue eyes shine
This time I think that my lover
Understands me
If we have faith in each other
Then we can be
Strong, baby
I will be your father figure
Put your tiny hand in mine
I will be your preacher teacher
Anything you have in mind
I will be your father figure
I have had enough of crime
I will be the one who loves you
'Til the end of time
If you are the desert
I'll be the sea
If you ever hunger
Hunger for me
Whatever you ask for
That's what I'll be
So when you remember the ones who have lied
Who said that they cared
But then laughed as you cried
Beautiful darling
Don't think of me
Because all I ever wanted
It's in your eyes, baby
And love can't lie, no
(Greet me with the eyes of a child)
My love is always tellin' me so
(Heaven is a kiss and a smile)
Just hold on, hold on
I won't let you go, my baby
I will be your father figure
Put your tiny hand in mine
I will be your preacher teacher
Anything you have in mind, baby
I will be your father figure
I have had enough of crime
(So I am gonna love you)
'Til the end of time
I will be your father
I will be your preacher
I will be your daddy, whoa
I will be the one who loves you 'til the end of time

Makes sense in the context of George Michael being gay perhaps? It would explain the reference to fear and sin? Just musing.

How the hell does him being gay 'make sense' of words about tiny hands and being a 'father figure'?Confused

EdgeOfACoin · 21/03/2021 09:23

Galway Girl.

Stop calling her a 'pretty little girl' and then kissing her neck.

justilou1 · 21/03/2021 09:23

@sleveen I was just coming back with that one! Ick!

Ninkanink · 21/03/2021 09:24

This was in reference to Lily Allen’s song, btw.
ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 21/03/2021 09:28

Just watched Seven Brides for Seven Brothers - I struggle to think of anything more offensive and wrong-headed than Sobbin' Women, but dang it's a fabulous tune.

ItsLateHumpty · 21/03/2021 09:29

One of my fav sing out loud, happy music, dodgy lyrics is the cover Blondie did of Buddy Hollys I'm Gonna Love You Too

Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Ha ha ha ha ha

You're gonna say you'll a-miss me
You're gonna say you'll a-kiss me
Yes, you're gonna say you'll a-love me
'Cause I'm a-gonna love you too

I don't care what you a-told me
You're gonna say you'll a-hold me
Yes, you're gonna say you'll a-love
'Cause I'm a-gonna love you too

After all, another fella took ya
But I still can't overlook ya
I'm a-gonna do my best to hook ya
After all is said and done

'Cause I'm a-gonna love you too

You're gonna tell me a-sweet things
You're gonna make-a my heart sing
Yes, you're gonna hear those bells ring
'Cause I'm a-gonna love you too

After all, another fella took ya
But I still can't overlook ya
I'm a-gonna do my best to hook ya
After all is said and done

You're gonna say you'll a-miss me
You're gonna say you'll a-kiss me
Yes, you're gonna say you'll a-love me
'Cause I'm a-gonna love you too
I'm a-gonna love you too
I'm a-gonna love you too

Bluntness100 · 21/03/2021 09:30

It says she’s a child.

PringlePopIt · 21/03/2021 09:34

@Lampzade I presumed the pp was talking about Inner Circle - Sweat la la la la

Ninkanink · 21/03/2021 09:36

Yes but that could just means she’s not old enough to be getting mixed up in trying to take men of his age home (or be taken home, whatever). If you’re a man in your early twenties I’m sure there are plenty of young girls who think they’re old enough to be wanting to sleep with you. Doesn’t make the girls bad, and it doesn’t make you bad for saying, look, I get what you want to do but it’s not going to happen. The song is clearly about a man who’s not taking advantage and who’s being responsible and looking out for her.
