Jolene, and other anti-feminist anthems

Just to say this is a light-hearted chat thread.
I love jolene, sing it with a minor adaptation every time I'm cleaning the windows. I have no idea about the background, but it must come near the top of the least feminist songs ever!
Another which I've just heard is sheryl crow, strong enough. "lie to me, I promise I'll believe, lie to me, but please don't leave"
Brilliant song, awful lyrics :)
Any others?

'OK now he was close
Tried to domesticate ya
But you're an animal
Baby it's in your nature
Just let me liberate you
You don't need no takers
That man is not your maker
And that's why I'ma take a good girl'

Blurred lines....I still turn up the volume when it comes on though Blush

noblegreenk · 20/03/2021 23:26

I love Jolene! I didn't like I'm the lyrics years ago when I first properly listened to them. But now I appreciate the story that Dolly is telling through the song. I also find it easier because it's an old song and times were different then. I find it worse with lyrics to more recent songs people have mentioned.

KisstheTeapot14 · 20/03/2021 23:28

What Jolene did next...

'Seen her in the indoor market,
selling packs of streaky bacon...'

She could be like an Elvis figure.

Many lives, that Jolene.

OR maybe Dolly did her a favour and once she got that double timin' man out of her hair she went on to be rather fabulous.

This Roy Orbison song's always set my teeth on edge:

'I drove all night to get to you
Is that all right?
I drove all night crept in your room
Woke you from your sleep to make love to you
Is that all right?'

If you're singing in the past tense about something you did to me, then only now asking if it's all right...it's NOT ALL RIGHT 🙈

ALittleBitofVitriol · 20/03/2021 23:29

My nails on chalkboard song is the gotye one. Great tune and video, but it makes me snarl at how whiny and possesive he is.

He wasn't really into her, 'lonely in her company' and was relieved when she dumps his ass - Kimbra's verse explains more of his gaslighting jerkiness - but he'll whine about her moving on. Ugh. Reminds me of an ex boyfriend lol, maybe that's why it grates so much....

ALittleBitofVitriol · 20/03/2021 23:30

Gotye, Somebody that I used to know

StarryGazeyEyes · 20/03/2021 23:30

More Dr Hook:

Who's gonna water my plants?
Who's gonna patch my pants?
And who's gonna give me
The chance to feel brand new?
Who's gonna iron my shirts?
Who's gonna kiss where it hurts?
And who needs a man when
He flirts the way I do?
Who, if not you?

It's not alright from the moment he drives through the night to "creep" into her bed while she was sleeping!
KisstheTeapot14 · 20/03/2021 23:32

I would walk 500 miles,

They sing something like

I'd give almost all my paycheck to you...

Oh bugger off back to the pub, I'm not that fussed about having it.

And I've changed the locks.

prawntoastie · 20/03/2021 23:32

absolutely love midnight train to Georgia, beautiful song but "il rather live in his world then without him in mine" is kind of low self esteem

Lovesacake · 20/03/2021 23:33

A song I love that also makes me cringe is Power by Little Mix. It’s all about female empowerment and then a man helpfully pops into the song halfway through to mansplain it to us, he helpfully reassures the listener that ‘you can be a woman and the boss and wear the trousers, at the same time’.

I bloody love the song but every time I hear that be I’m like ‘oh can I? Thank you 😂’

Redcrayons · 20/03/2021 23:34

Drunk in Love Beyoncé and JayZ.
She’s a bit drunk and feeling frisky, he’s says ges

Scout2016 · 20/03/2021 23:34

That comment about Bruce leaving his wife and kids in Baltimore Jack tickled me.

Elvis's Don't is very off, but what a voice.

I love The Internet Special Affair but don't know what to make of it from this perspective, because it's a woman singing "have some booze, stop pretening to be nice, come home with me where I'll be great in bed but break your heart as I'm not stopping" to another woman. I'm paraphrasing the lyrics of course!

No Diggity - is that a love song to a sex worker? I'm not sure about that one lyrically either but I like it.

I once saw Blazin' Squad performing Flip Reverse, followed by the Cheeky Girls with their "touch my bum" lyrics. Urgh.

OfaFrenchmind2 · 20/03/2021 23:37

"Hey Mama" from Nicki Minaj gives me the rage. Every times I hear it I want to slap her in the face.

Redcrayons · 20/03/2021 23:37

Post too soon
Beyoncé drunk and feeling a bit frisky. JayZ is going all Ike Turner on her. What?

Goldigga Kanye west. Terrible Slut shaming lyrics, but great tune.

Ah yes I can see what you mean -why would the man who is off flirting with Jolene be worth fighting to keep,- if DP wrote up scenario of Jolene on here we would all be telling her to not to do the pick me dance !

Great thread, really interesting to see people’s thoughts.

ShimmyShimmyYa · 20/03/2021 23:42

absolutely love Gold Digger by Kanye

AdoraBell · 20/03/2021 23:43

Not sure if this has been said, but Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music I Put A Spell OnYou.

Love the song but, I put a spell on you because you’re mine. Fuck off

RockCrushesLizard · 20/03/2021 23:45

"I drove all night" was written by Cyndi Lauper - it sounds totally different sung by a woman...

TidyOmlette · 20/03/2021 23:46

Destiny’s child - cater 2 u.

Worst one yet I think

Staffy1 · 20/03/2021 23:48

I'm a barbie girl.

Oh no you don’t. Grin My regard for Gordon Lightfoot has already been dented by this thread (If you could read my mind is one of my all time favourite songs. You’re not tarnishing Bryan Ferry too.

The version of I put a spell on you I know best is Nina Simone’s, probably recorded one the 60s, and I suspect it’s a bit of a standard. So all BF/RM are guilty of is making a bad pick for a cover version. ( Can you tell I’m determined to stay in love with Roxy Music?)

Scout2016 · 20/03/2021 23:51

Sorry if it's been said but I'd Rather Go Blind, Etta James.
