"Feel empowered... uplift and motivate... supporting the Campaign for Female Education" ... by buying a notebook with a load of women's arses in their knickers on the cover.

Slow handclap for @FromPaperchase t.co/WwyKpOqp17

Whilst ridiculously expensive, my DS likes paperchase stuff and in none lockdown times we like to have a browse in their stores and buy quite a bit.

The notebook itself is not very diverse (why are all the bums white?) and not something I would use. Clearly, not something I would buy for my son.

If boys or men did buy the notepad, I dont think that it would be used in a way to empower women

It's not an empowering image as other people said far more eloquently than me. I would add thst unless plastic surgery is involved, women don't really have a choice about their bum shape. It is just part of our body.

It is just all a bit shit really and does put me off from visiting their stores when they reopen.

Deliriumoftheendless · 20/03/2021 07:26

Thongs do have a habit of bringing a tear to many an eye, but probably not for the reasons you thought grin

That was part of the joke! 😂

Nith · 20/03/2021 07:42

This image has become a symbol of female empowerment & recognised as such in this form

I'd love Paperchase to quote chapter and verse on their authority for that one.

ChattyLion · 20/03/2021 07:50

Great- a high street stationery’collection that encompasses unity and inclusivity’ and ‘diverse representation’ and ‘empowerment’... except
via 100% white skinned people default (yet they’ve coloured in each pair of pants) hmm]
via an objectifying line up of 100% patriarchally-fuckable female body parts supposedly to exemplify diversity, not attached to a human body Hmm
The idea that empowerment comes via women wearing less clothes is 100% patriarchal gaslighting self serving commodifying bullshit.
I feel sorry for the women’s education charity having to justify this to themselves or their users.
Do they believe that knowledge isn’t power? Do they believe power comes to women instead by stereotyping and reducing them to their sexualised body parts? Hmm

TheBitterBoy · 20/03/2021 07:59

Paperchase have form for this kind of thing. Anyone remember their free boob badges for IWD 2019?www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3527572-Paperchase-are-giving-out-free-pin-badges-for-IWD-am-I-wrong-to-feel-uncomfortable

toffeebutterpopcorn · 20/03/2021 08:00

It isn’t clear of either/both of the creators of this female. Therefore it could be a male impression of female ‘empowerment’. I’d like a bit more of an explanation of that please (it seems to be one of those expressions that is meant to make people go ‘ohhhh, empowerment - that’s a good word isn’t it?’).

Or maybe - a la toffeebutterpopcorn in Primary 2 - they just thought it would be a hoot to decorate their school jotters with bums and hand it to their teacher to make their homework - with bums on it 🤫

wwwwwwwwwwwww

Didn’t we all at that age?

30PercentRecycled · 20/03/2021 08:04

Oh oh I know this one miss!!!

Ladies ladies we all know only fuckable women are taken seriously by men. It has come to our attention that some women fear they are not fuckable enough to be taken seriously. But they are wrong! Men like fucking many different shapes and sizes of women. So all you ladies worried about your fuckability factor, relax! Know that you can go out in the world confident in being acceptably fuckable. Men will talk to you and laugh at your jokes because you too are potentially fuckable. Go get em girls.

LizzieSiddal · 20/03/2021 08:05

We’ve come such a long way havent we Hmm

toffeebutterpopcorn · 20/03/2021 08:06

I suspect Neanderthal women has it better.

AdaFuckingShelby · 20/03/2021 08:09

Ah, the male brain and it's ideas. If only there was a way of getting balanced opinion in industry.

MrMucker · 20/03/2021 08:11

Empowered by showing cartoon pictures of arses, my arse.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 20/03/2021 08:14

I look forward the male empowerment one of willies. We’ve had bare boobs and ladies bums so far.

ArabellaScott · 20/03/2021 08:45

@toffeebutterpopcorn

They had the boob one a couple of years back. I forget the ‘reason’ for that one though.
Oh tits and ass, the complete set. Fab.
alkanet · 20/03/2021 08:52

When is the vulva one coming out?

ArabellaScott · 20/03/2021 09:03

The couple who created it look like a woman and a transman, toffee.

I object in particular to all the cutesy infantilising stuff. Are we really not over the pastels and rainbows and childlike drawings stage yet? It's sickly and starting to look really tired.

A cynical part of me notes that hardly anybody actually learns solid draughtsmanship skills anymore so the current aesthetic is this limp.. well, half arsed crap.

Anyway, other than that, I propose we adopt this new symbol of female empowerment toot suite! We need arseflags and an anthem - 'keep the red pants flying ' maybe. Would also fit with 'wrong side of history my arse' - but the spinners' skills are far superior.

ThinkWittyThoughts · 20/03/2021 09:35

FFS the boobs and IWD badges had passed me by (or I forgot). I'm not propping up misogynists, especially ones that dig their heels in and try to gaslight that showing off white, wedgied women's arses is some how empowering ANY woman.

Now I've got to find a replacement for my beloved notebooks.
Sob. They're the perfect size, great line spacing and margins! Bugger.

Any ideas welcome

toffeebutterpopcorn · 20/03/2021 09:37

The boob paper was used in our office by smutty men...

I also love Rhodia notebooks

I particularly like dotgrid because so much of my work involves sketching diagrams. Then I found it was equally good for me for normal longhand writing.

Doyoumind · 20/03/2021 10:09

I suspect that if it were pointed out to them fiercely that the issue is the lack of diversity of a load of white bums, it will get removed from sale. I don't think they would have a come back for that one.

CardinalLolzy · 20/03/2021 10:23

I am having real trouble believing that this wasn't immediately obvious and they still went ahead with it anyway.

How do you look at that and NOT see a bunch of white arses being used to sell a product because, teehee, knickers and bums?

30PercentRecycled · 20/03/2021 10:43

They might have been blinded by two of the bums being men's bums hence inclusivity achieved!

Plenty of people on twitter have been commenting on the whiteness of the arses. Many of the comments are quite funny.

Tablegs · 20/03/2021 10:45

@aliasundercover

They could identify as duck-billed platypuses and it would make no difference.

TDBPADBP

Don't you mean NADBPALT? Grin
30PercentRecycled · 20/03/2021 10:46

I have noticed a tendency by organisations to hire a person due to their identity rather than skills and then apply no critical thought to the output. The Special One produced it so it must be diverse and inclusive, if I challenge it in the review meeting I'll look like a something-phobe or something-ist.

OptionsShmoptions · 20/03/2021 10:46

If only we all showed our bums more. Took photos of ourselves naked. Had evenings hanging out in our Agent Provocateur and Savage Fenty and then posted them on Instagram. Particularly those of us with a BMI over 30 - get ‘em off! This will fix EVERYTHING. It’s Empowerment. Feminism. And it has the added bonus of keeping men happy too.

My teenage daughter has just started back at school. She’s just started getting wolf-whistled and leered at. I’ll get her this notebook and she can start feeling empowered. Thanks Paperchase!
