Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Daily acts of feminism - a thread for ideas

teawamutu · 14/03/2021 10:14

Pinched the idea shamelessly from another thread after an hour of speechless rage reading the papers and Twatter. I need to DO something.

I pledge to do something positive every day to stand up for women. Deeds not words.

Today was taken care of for me - a subscription to The Radical Notion for Mother's Day. I'm also going to fill out the VAWG consultation.

Thought might be good to share anything else we come across here, so anyone in need of ideas could check?

Great work all.

I have another suggestion, for anyone who is reporting their own or their secondary school age children's Covid test results.

The survey asks for gender (not sex).

At the bottom of the web page, if you click "is this page useful" then there is an option to be sent a questionnaire. You do need to provide your email address in the questionnaire. But I have completed it to suggest they change the question from Gender to Sex. Given that my child does not have a gender (children were not asked the gender question in the Census). And, crucially, given that Covid impacts the male sex differently to females then it would seem sex is the correct data to be collecting.

N.B if you're not in this cohort of submitting LFT test results, have a hunt round for other gov.uk pages using gender when they mean sex and hit the same "No" button for "Is this page useful".

Thanks for the nudge about the covid test report form, Leafstamp. I'll give feedback on the next one I report.

Ieatmarmite · 01/04/2021 13:29

Today I've subscribed to the Filia newsletter and Ive sent a letter to my MP asking him to write to Helen Whatley to ask her to make telemedical abortion care a permanent change to abortion regulations.

Ieatmarmite · 01/04/2021 13:31

I like the idea of a daily act of feminism - 365 actions a year is a lot of activism. Im going to try hard to keep it up.

Bumping for Easter Sunday

PotholeHellhole · 05/04/2021 10:58

I've helped with a small business loan to two women on LendWithCare today. Brilliant site.

teawamutu · 06/04/2021 18:21

Dug for Raquel Rosario Sanchez today - she has an imminent deadline. And as usual, I declined to leave a tip.

Also - because I didn't do daily acts over Easter Blush - I spent a few minutes going through Leafstamp's links and asking for the pages to be amended in line with the EA2010. Am now all caught up.

Glad I’ve found this thread again. Just did two loans with Lend with care. Have seen on TV while back and always meant to do it. Great to be able support women across the world.

Scout2016 · 10/04/2021 08:34

I messaged a local event to ask why their line up was nearly all male. Be interested to see what / if they reply. 16 acts announced so far and only one, low down the bill, is a woman.
Two acts have women as backing singers / dancers which is not the same as they aren't "in the band" band members, if you see what I mean. That's not meant as a criticism of them, just I know it's hard for women to get to front bands or get equal billing.
Ashamed to say the lineup imbalance might not have occurred to me if I hadn't heard it being discussed on the radio the other day, and how hard it is for women to get these gigs or get near headling. Someone has set up a website listing available female acts so promoters can't argue they couldn't find any.

Going to email my MP about DV bill.

SmallPug · 10/04/2021 08:52

Someone may have already suggested this, but sign up to updates from Sex Matters (sex-matters.org/) - and donate if you have the money to do so. I have a regular donation to Sex Matters, Fair Play for Women, and The Centre for Women's Justice. I donate to Nia too. I also ask for donations to such organisations instead of presents.

On my to do list contact my candidates for May election to Scottish Govt about their position on women's rights.

SmallPug · 10/04/2021 09:14

@WarriorN

And the baroness replies so quickly, she's amazing!
I know this is an old post but just reading now. I've never had a single reply from the Baroness!! What have I done? I wrote to loads of Lords and Baronesses after the MOMA bill and had some lovely replies, but nothing from her. And I have written to her before.
Terranean · 12/04/2021 21:29

Thanks @OldCrone

For Women Scotland update on case against Scottish Government redefining "woman" to include men

Having spoken to our lawyers and considered the financial implications and the appetite for this case, we have decided that we will appeal the decision on the Gender Representation on Public Boards Act. Our legal team is confident that the judgement is legally challengeable.

We have already seen this law cited by lobbyists hoping to roll back women's rights, and we have seen an MP claim that she would have no issue with a “gender balanced” board made up of 50% men and 50% transwomen. The Scottish Government also take the view that men who self-identify as women, are women - and this will be the basis of future policies. Therefore, we feel we have a duty to Scottish women to continue to fight: we cannot leave this law on the statute books to the detriment of women.

We would rather we did not have to seek redress from the courts, but as the Scottish Government continues to refuse to engage with women, we have little choice. Unchallenged, we feel this would only embolden those who wish to undermine Equality Act 2010 - we understand that the Scottish Green Party are now demanding the adoption of the flawed Yogyakarta Principles into Scots Law.

A reclaiming motion was formally marked on 9th April .

Garden still open for volunteer diggers.

teawamutu · 15/04/2021 10:00

I dug yesterday. In need of an action for today if anyone's got one...
