Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Daily acts of feminism - a thread for ideas

Pinched the idea shamelessly from another thread after an hour of speechless rage reading the papers and Twatter. I need to DO something.

I pledge to do something positive every day to stand up for women. Deeds not words.

Today was taken care of for me - a subscription to The Radical Notion for Mother's Day. I'm also going to fill out the VAWG consultation.

Thought might be good to share anything else we come across here, so anyone in need of ideas could check?

@teawamutu

Today's act: gardening for FWS. Again.
Well done. I’ve been painting so haven’t managed anything specific tussah other than keeping up to speed on the reddit thing and passing around info on social media.

Yesterday I dug for Sonia Appleby and gave the census twats a piece of my mind.

gardenbird48 · 24/03/2021 17:01

*today !!

LoveCauliflowerCheese · 24/03/2021 20:39

I think it's nice to message those who are brave and challenge this nonsense online. Especially young people. Ridiculous that it should seem brave to speak the truth of course. I feel expressing solidarity is important here to let them know they are so appreciated. Saoirse Connelly and Fionne Orlander on Twitter for example.

LoveCauliflowerCheese · 24/03/2021 20:41

Oh and writing to our MPs to ask what their views are on Gender, Pornography, transing children.... and letting them know our thoughts!

LoveCauliflowerCheese · 24/03/2021 20:48

Starting a list of GC politicians:

of gender critical politicians? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/feminist_activism/4201436-list-of-gender-critical-politicians

teawamutu · 25/03/2021 17:47

Today's action was filling in the Welsh government consultation on equality funding.

Only took 20 minutes and very cathartic to set out exactly why I don't think any public body should be funding Stonewall.

When discussing films with your children, friends, work, make sure to check if it passes the Bechdale test, and if not then discuss why.

Great thread!

Great thread!

Excellent point! My DC have known about it since they were about 6 BlushGrin

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 25/03/2021 19:33

I loathe the Bechdel test because it nearly always auto-corrects to Bechamel or something similar which makes me second-guess myself.
Blush

I grew up deeply resenting women in most of the films that I liked (adventure or thrillers) because they Always Got in the Way and Did Nothing Useful but Need to Be Rescued. Gah - the indoctrination.

crashbandicootwarped · 26/03/2021 16:30

So I made my feelings known on the feedback section of the census.
Filled in the women's health survey and sent it to a friend
Brought a whole bunch of feminist badges to wear and distribute

Printed off the joke that is my works equality and diversity policy to go through and point out the inaccuracies. Not brave enough to do this anything other than anonymously.
The obvious exchange is sex for gender is easy to point out. The whole page divoted to gender identity is another issue. It is written from the point of view that gender recognition is a process and as soon as a transition is started that's it.
The fact that the other protected characteristics have a bullet point each is depressing.
I feel like I may need help to unpick it 'professionally' from a legal point of view.

Does anyone have a good policy that I can use as reference please?

Tartyflette · 26/03/2021 17:05

@teawamutu

My task for today is writing to Liz Truss and Kemi Badenoch (got distracted with micro loans yday). I want to thank them for holding firm on sex and women's protections. Thinking I need to bring up: Conversion therapy ban Hate crimes and domestic violence classed by sex, not gender GRA Implications of the census ruling and need to look at Stonewall influence.

Anything else?

What has Kemi done? She is my local MP and is not generally that well-regarded. (Doesn't always respond to constituents) Be nice to find out she is worthwhile after all.
thinkingaboutLangCleg · 29/03/2021 02:13

I’ve had an email from Sex Matters inviting women to help analyse responses to the Women and Equalities committee’s recent consultation on changes to the Gender Recognition Act. I’ve emailed back to say yes, at [email protected]

PotholeHellhole · 29/03/2021 23:47

I read about Sonia Appleby's crowd funder on another thread, and that has been my act for today.

Leafstamp · 31/03/2021 07:33

Here’s one for later today/this week:

teawamutu · 31/03/2021 13:12

Great shout - I've filled it in. Really quick and simple.

OP posts:
334bu · 31/03/2021 17:44

Filled in Rugby consultation.

Leafstamp · 31/03/2021 18:29

The draft policy, information and the link to the consultation survey is on this page:

ArcheryAnnie · 31/03/2021 20:36

My task for today: filling in a feedback form for my hospital visit, where I praise the hospital lavishly, but complain about the feedback form itself, because it asks me about gender ("identify as male, identify as female, trans, non-binary, other, prefer not to say") which is immaterial to my medical care, but does not ask me about sex, which absolutely is.

NoLactose · 31/03/2021 21:23

If anyone has any suggestions for phrases they’d like to see, let me know and I’ll put them on my list! In fact maybe I’ll set up a shop just for feminist content but I quite like having it mixed up amongst other stuff.

@SinkGirl how about:

Tired of Explaining Reality to Fuckwits

🤷‍♀️

Did this today.

I also crocheted seditious matter for which I have a plan Grin

And I donated to the orchid project (FGM)

Sophoclesthefox · 31/03/2021 22:35

And I signed up to support Sex Matters, and I wrote to baroness Nicholson.

Loving the tally of positive actions.

RabbitOfCaerbannog · 01/04/2021 01:01

My daughter is racing through Onjali Rauf's books. She's read three now. Grateful for the recommendation from pps.

Cuntysnark · 01/04/2021 09:25

Ooh Sophoclesthefox I have some crocheting to do-a timely reminder!

teawamutu · 01/04/2021 10:30

I filled in the cycling consultation today.

Tomorrow I plan to dig for Keira.
