Daily acts of feminism - a thread for ideas

Pinched the idea shamelessly from another thread after an hour of speechless rage reading the papers and Twatter. I need to DO something.

I pledge to do something positive every day to stand up for women. Deeds not words.

Today was taken care of for me - a subscription to The Radical Notion for Mother's Day. I'm also going to fill out the VAWG consultation.

Thought might be good to share anything else we come across here, so anyone in need of ideas could check?

Thanks for this thread :)

I'm going to fill in the VAWG consultation too, and do some digging for Raquel tomorrow. She's not far off her target now!

Women in Business, or Professions.

Join, or create, a mentoring scheme for girls/women entering your field. Seek out other women for promotions and development, and guide them on their way.

Would encourage anyone with a spare bob to donate to Fair Play for Women and Nia.

Great idea. This morning I subscribed to the Chaotic Neutral newsletter and helped two elderly women with the confusing outdoor cafe system.

There were some MAMALs pushing in front of them Angry

I’ve called out the use of gender instead of sex. I was at a training course ( external provider ) where we were asked to chose a gender at the start ( no warning in advance and it was not relevant to the course ).

Also the male trainer ignored questions raised by women trainees and talked about his own issues instead.

I’m “meeting” this week with the course organiser ( from our work ) to talk about this . I’m fortunate to be in a work situation where I can do that safely - I appreciate that many women can’t do this.

Thank you for the Radical Notion recommendation. I’m learning more here every day about how to articulate my feelings about the subjugation of women’s rights.

I like to think I have promote feminism everyday as an English teacher in an all girl’s high. We choose our Literature geared towards strong women, and especially PoC (as our students are predominantly Indian heritage).

  1. Amplify. Follow others on twitter, retweet, engage if youre feeling brave.

Amplify womens businesses wherever you can - like their pages, share them on sm. Sign petitions.

  1. Put your money where your mouth is. Watch shows where there are more women. Buy tickets to things produced by women. I donate money quite often and have donated to some of those already named.

Write to your MP - I'm going to write about the man who throttled his wife as he was stressed about covid and got 5 years I think it was. I have a Cons MPbit it seems to be Labour MPs and Harriet Harmsn who are requesting a review.

Challenging gender instead of sex, and the use of cis - both excellent ideas. I already do, but I'll be more rigorous about it.

Also making a point of writing to thank public figures who do speak sense on the issue.

Absolutely. It was flowers and postcards last year (pre Covid).

Elections are coming - write to every single candidate to ask their views on women's rights (there was a good thread on that recently, anyone still linked?) Ask awkward questions, including Staniland.

If they won't support women, make it clear they've lost your vote.

Currently getting started in broadening my knowledge of Black feminism (books are getting harder to order, I'll tell you, half of them keep being pushed back for unknown reasons).

I also signed up to campaign for a feminist political party! Admittedly it's more handing out than any speaking position (likely won't surprise anyone to say that I'm not that verbally eloquent), but I'm genuinely hoping they'll get a much bigger space in the current political climate. The rise of the right is making me fearful- especially given my own relatives seem to be in full support of right conservative parties that want to take away my legal protections.

I designed some paper cuts this morning for myself today, didn’t intend to share them but thought fuck it and have listed the templates on Etsy - they may well piss people off, hopefully it won’t completely wreck my business but I am absolutely exhausted of hearing this shit over and over. These are going on my wall and I plan to have a wall full by the time I’m done. Hopefully others will fill a wall in their home with them too!

I’ve been wanting to make some feminist-themed work for ages but this current situation gave me a push. I am planning more, and will be donating a share of the proceeds to Rape Crisis.

If anyone has any suggestions for phrases they’d like to see, let me know and I’ll put them on my list! In fact maybe I’ll set up a shop just for feminist content but I quite like having it mixed up amongst other stuff.

I recommend Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. I always encourage my GCSE and A-level students to read her.

Only donate to orgs that use full transparency; so you know who they are, where the money is going, how it will be used, and where any spare funds will go in advance.

Shizuku, where can I buy that badge? Can they be personalised - if, for example, I wanted the topline to read Transmen? TIA

Can I just point out that insisting trans men are included in your feminism as they're either females or women who want to call themselves men (depending on the charming personality of the person stating it, of course), by default not just makes it pointedly obvious you don't and won't listen to trans men, but you're also transphobic?
