Daily acts of feminism - a thread for ideas

Pinched the idea shamelessly from another thread after an hour of speechless rage reading the papers and Twatter. I need to DO something.

I pledge to do something positive every day to stand up for women. Deeds not words.

Today was taken care of for me - a subscription to The Radical Notion for Mother's Day. I'm also going to fill out the VAWG consultation.

Thought might be good to share anything else we come across here, so anyone in need of ideas could check?

The asn do great work but their website seems to be all 'people' and no women. Which is disappointing.

Idontlikethatnameanymore · 17/03/2021 18:59

When I started making the donation it wasn’t, but regardless we all know it’s only biological women who undergo abortions, and if a transman was raped, for example, in a country that prohibited abortion I wouldn’t and couldn’t stand in their way of obtaining a safe termination.

teawamutu · 17/03/2021 19:50

I can see myself becoming a bit addicted to www.lendwithcare.org

Same - just made a couple of small loans to women in Pakistan and Malawi. What a wonderful scheme. Definitely going to make that a monthly thing. Thanks for sharing!

On the theme of default male - when crossing the road with children we wait for the the “green person” rather than “green man”.

sashh · 18/03/2021 03:43

Oh I make loans through Kiva, they don't exclusively lend to women but you choose who to lend to starting at $25.

I helped buy a cow in Pakistan and set up a shop in South America.

I'm also disappointed in ASN but as a pp said if someone needs an abortion they need an abortion.

Back to teaching computing, I make sure the class know who Ada Lovelace and Grace Hopper are/were.

Taswama · 18/03/2021 07:53

I refer to unknown people as she. So when someone tells me they have a new boss, I say 'what's her name?'. When taking the train with dc, I wonder aloud if we will see her (the driver).
I also correct colleagues who talk about 'the girls in HR / accounts' and ask if they are under 18?
I also lend money to women with lend with care.

My task for today is writing to Liz Truss and Kemi Badenoch (got distracted with micro loans yday). I want to thank them for holding firm on sex and women's protections. Thinking I need to bring up:
Conversion therapy ban
Hate crimes and domestic violence classed by sex, not gender
GRA
Implications of the census ruling and need to look at Stonewall influence.

Anything else?

Yes something else. Tweak definition so Domestic Abuse covers what happens to a woman by those she cannot escape, because they are inside the place she lives.
(Currently, a flat-sharer or others cannot be protected, because their existence is ignored by the definition, which assumes nobody lives with anyone who is not a partner or ex, or one of a tiny list of permitted tick-box- defined 'officially recognised category' assailants.)

Loving the links!
I'm planning to get some items from here once my notebooks start slowing down. Supporting women led business is a great idea...

I try to get products made by women such as clothes, prints / paintings, toiletries, gifts, tattoos. I do some online arty courses run by women too.

fatblackcatspaw · 18/03/2021 16:58

yes support women owned businesses. I crochet and I make a point of finding local yarn shops in places I visit as they are invariably owned by women.

sashh · 18/03/2021 17:03

I've just learned there is a women only covid vaccine centre in Yorkshire, I hope it doesn't attract the TRAs.

PotholeParadies · 18/03/2021 18:21

Agnosticism is a philosophical position on knowledge - saying you're agnostic is declaring that you don't know.

Theism is having a faith. Atheism is not having a faith.

PotholeParadies · 18/03/2021 18:22

I think I've posted on the wrong thread!

rapejusticefail · 18/03/2021 18:45

I’ve posted this on the general feminism board already but -

In response to the judgment on the EVAW challenge of the CPS:

From CWJ website here - www.centreforwomensjustice.org.uk/news/2021/3/17/rape-justice-now-2-things-you-can-do-now

"We know our supporters are as disappointed as us with Monday’s judgment which failed to hold the CPS accountable for the devastating drop in rape prosecutions.

We urge women across England and Wales to continue this fight with us by:
1 Responding to the Home Office's current consultation on its national Violence against Women and Girls Strategy

2 Demanding the CPS waive their legal costs. The £75,000 CrowdJustice funds we raised came from the pockets of survivors, activists and those working with victims. EVAW and CWJ could use these funds to continue to help women get justice after rape.

Might be something some mumsnetters could get behind?

PurpleHoodie · 18/03/2021 18:46

Definitely.

Leafstamp · 18/03/2021 20:25

I fear I may be repeating an earlier cross reference, but just in case anyone hasn't already seen this resource thread then you may find some inspiration for armchair activism here:

Thanks for this! Such a disappointing judgment.

334bu · 19/03/2021 07:26

Just thinking about how often male violence is minimised in newspaper headlines ( e g "loving father snaps and....)"

According to
ipso.co.uk

"Any member of the public or any organisation can make a complaint under Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Code, if they are looking to correct a significant inaccuracy. "

Maybe we should have a template letter for this and flood them with complaints.

334bu · 19/03/2021 07:40

Just read this thread. Had no idea there was a time limit of only 6 months in bringing a domestic violence charge.
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/petitions_noticeboard/4196016-abolish-time-limits-to-bring-charges-for-offences-for-acts-of-domestic-violence

MaudTheInvincible · 19/03/2021 10:35

I must get in the habit of checking the petitions and activism board once a week or something. I do neglect it, and there are loads of things on there to do.

Don't forget to look at the petitions board occasionally! www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3946438-don-t-forget-to-look-at-the-petitions-board-occasionally

teawamutu · 19/03/2021 13:26

Have mailed the Equality Ministers.

Thinking I might contact the WE committee members later, to mention the very many inaccuracies from that evidence session.

OP posts:
PurpleHoodie · 19/03/2021 13:27

Yes Maud. I'm guilty of not doing this.

Thanks to your post, I will.

We should all check in at least 2x a week.

PurpleHoodie · 19/03/2021 13:57

334bu

Yes. Didn't want this to get lost.
