Jess Philips counting dead women

Jess Phillips reading the names of the 118 women murdered at the hands of men in the last year, in parliament yesterday, has floored me! I listened to every name with deep respect and deep sorrow that this violence against women is just an accepted part of our society. What she did was incredibly powerful.

Jess Phillips thinks men can be women.

iamaMused · 12/03/2021 09:15

Wow.... how emotional was that. RIP to all those women and as Jess says in honour of those let's all be better friends/ relatives and be available to all women experiencing domestic violence and abuse.

cosmopolitanplease · 12/03/2021 09:17

Karen Ingala Smith does amazing work compiling and checking the list of dead women killed by men. And she knows what a woman is too.

I know there are issues with Phillips' stance regarding gender - but, as someone who had a friend who was unfortunate enough to make the list one year (murdered by her husband), it is an incredibly moving gesture and some acknowledgement of how fucked up the situation is regarding male violence against women.

Floisme · 12/03/2021 09:35

I am happy to give Jess Philips credit when I think it is due, so thank you Jess, you did a good thing yesterday.

And thank you to Karen Ingala Smith for compiling the names.

Flowers to all

The Guardian has put photos of the murdered women on the front page, next to this quote from Eddie Izzard about being promoted to a 'she'

Sarah Everard story on there too

But isn't it a bit much that the woman who is making such a big deal out of women's plight, doesn't believe women exist as a sex category!

Dailyhandtowelwash · 12/03/2021 09:37

She's done it every year in the IWD debate. Six years since she started, and the point she's making, that this isn't taken seriously by Government, is exactly the same. How depressing. The media continues to report on the murders of women (when it does) as isolated incidents. If two people a week were dying from misusing a drug, can you imagine the coverage? If two people a week were dying from an activity, it would be banned by now.

I used to work with a senior police officer by the way, who thought he knew better than anyone, including any women, about how media coverage of domestic violence and rape affected people. He's run domestic violence units in the past. He refused to accept that media depictions of rape and violence affected anyone's thinking at all. While we have people like him in charge, I feel very gloomy about the prospect of change.

Scrunchy95 · 12/03/2021 09:49

@Numicon

Jess Phillips thinks men can be women.
Where does she say that? She believes that we can have a solution and reasonable adjustment and rhetoric that gives progress to Trans people while protecting women-only spaces.

Accepting Trans women while ensuring women's rights and safety remains protected is exactly what we need. This isn't 'believing men can be women' it is acknowledging that trans women aren't women but are valid in their own skin.

Reading a list of 118 women who died in the last year which doesn't include any Trans women is a very powerful highlight as to just how much women are at risk and need safety measures.

Nobody is reading a list of all the Trans women who have been murdered by men in the last year. There is a simple reason for this... there haven't been any.

Credit to Jess. It is very moving to hear all those names.

In Scotland woman have been excluded from protection in the Hate Crime Bill..
How long do women have to wait ? Will Jess have to pass the baton on 20 years from now?

While agreeing with your overall point, I am picking up on your comparison with drug misuse- approx 12 people every day die from this (2/3rds of them male). Junkies are even lower down the pecking order than women, few people care. Treatment, decriminalisation and other actually quite simple and cost effective harm reduction measures could be implemented but the daily mail would have a fit so no politicians ever do it.

More lost souls being let down by society.
Sorry for the derail, but felt I needed to flag that.

IdblowJonSnow · 12/03/2021 09:57

It was extremely moving and powerful. Needed saying. I'd not been aware of JP doing this until yesterday.
RIP all those women. Flowers

AIMD · 12/03/2021 10:09

The number of children killed alongside their parents was upsetting too.

I totally accept your point and I actually phrased my initial point wrongly - in my mind, I was thinking of the reaction if a prescription drug were found to kill through misuse. I entirely agree that the way people with complex and chaotic lives, including substance abuse, are regarded by 'society' is disgraceful.

Siablue · 12/03/2021 10:54

I am pleased that she does this every year. It has focused attention on the victims so many of who died alongside their children.

The list she reads out is from the femicide census which is an important pice of work. It has highlighted how many older women are murdered and that because of this there are possibly some murders that are missed because the women were expected to die.

JosieJarker · 12/03/2021 11:07

Some people still felt the need to centre trans women.
None of who were murdered by men last year.

Exactly. Do I agree with everything JP says? No obviously not. I totally appreciate this though, she doesn’t have to do it.
Hopeishere52 · 12/03/2021 11:29

Flowers thank you to Karen Ingala Smith and Jess Phillips.
Every name read is one too many.

peak2021 · 12/03/2021 11:31

I have a mixture of appreciation for Jess Phillips highlighting the number of women murdered, and a sadness that it is so many.

andyoldlabour · 12/03/2021 11:35

The same Jess Phillips who thinks that TWAW and tried to make light of the Cologne New Year sex attacks where hundreds of women were attacked.

Numicon · 12/03/2021 13:27

Jess Phillips is totally convinced that TWAW, and as such has no place defending the rights and safety of women, when she includes males in her definition of 'woman'.

RootyT00t · 12/03/2021 14:33

That is a disgusting comment.
