Jess Philips counting dead women

Jess Phillips reading the names of the 118 women murdered at the hands of men in the last year, in parliament yesterday, has floored me! I listened to every name with deep respect and deep sorrow that this violence against women is just an accepted part of our society. What she did was incredibly powerful.

"And?"
And that means we have at least one woman in the house of commons with no critical thinking skills or basic knowledge of science or class analysis.

@JosieJarker

Right.

Even if that was true, does that mean she's not allowed compassion for anyone?

Your arrogance In calling someone who doesn't agree with you lacking those things in outstanding.

JosieJarker · 12/03/2021 14:53

She can have compassion for whoever she wants.
I'm sure she does care about dead women.
But men cant be women.
To believe they can you would have to be lacking in basic science and class knowledge.
Its not about agreeing.
Im sure she doesn't actually believe men can be women, in which case pretending to would indicate she posseses worse traits than the ones I've listed.

No it is about agreeing. Youre being facetious here.

She shares the same belief as I do and it's pretty appalling to suggest we therefore can't care about murdered woman.

@CoffeeWithCheese

I know there are issues with Phillips' stance regarding gender - but, as someone who had a friend who was unfortunate enough to make the list one year (murdered by her husband), it is an incredibly moving gesture and some acknowledgement of how fucked up the situation is regarding male violence against women.
I agree. My friend was murdered by her partner many years ago now but hearing her read their names really got me.
JosieJarker · 12/03/2021 16:39

Good job I didn't suggest any such thing then.

RootyT00t · 12/03/2021 16:41

You didn't, but the original comment I responded to did.

AnyFucker · 12/03/2021 16:42

I don’t have to agree with everything that Jess says and believes to appreciate some of the things she has done

She gets a lot of stick for being like a dog with a bone on the subject of murdered women and stays steadfast

donquixotedelamancha · 12/03/2021 16:47

Jess Phillips is totally convinced that TWAW, and as such has no place defending the rights and safety of women, when she includes males in her definition of 'woman'.

Absolutely- she's guilty of a thought crime and so anything else she says is wrong- she must be canc.......

....hang on a minute. Something's not quite right. I've just remembered- that's the other lot.

JosieJarker · 12/03/2021 16:47

Not sure why you're quoting my posts if your issue is with someone elses?
I think she's done a good thing that needs doing in this instance.
That doesn't mean I have to agree with everything she does or thinks.

Numicon · 12/03/2021 16:51

Someone who says they will seek protections for women, but includes male rapists in their definition of women, is not really seeking to protect women. If we can never say 'no' to having males in our spaces, we can never say 'no' to male violence.

AnyFucker · 12/03/2021 17:06

I think Jess may be a MN’er. Keep up the good work you are doing in raising awareness of femicide, Jess.

ValancyRedfern · 12/03/2021 17:13

I was very pleased hear Jess say 'I can't change the chromosomes in my body' when she was discussing violence against women on the Radio 4 today programme the other day. She knows it's because of sex, she's just too scared to say it out loud. I think it's great that she reads the list compiled by Karen Ingala Smith every year.

Vargas · 12/03/2021 17:15

It's great that she does this even if she currently believes (or says she believes) that TWAW. I would be very interested in her views on sex-based rights.

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 12/03/2021 17:16

Someone on a different thread (which I now can't find) said that at least 2 of the women on that list were murdered by transwomen. Does anyone know if that's true?

User133847 · 12/03/2021 17:17

Where were they when girls were being systematically abused in towns like Rotherham?

Numicon · 12/03/2021 17:28

It's great that she does this even if she currently believes (or says she believes) that TWAW. I would be very interested in her views on sex-based rights.

My worry is that for all the good work done highlighting this, to then just allow any male who feels like it to be part of the female sex class, undoes the gains achieved. How can women escape male violence, when we can never say 'no' to them?!

RootyT00t · 12/03/2021 17:38

Because you quoted my response to them?

Not agreeing with everything is fine.

tilder · 12/03/2021 21:01

Please don't make this about TW. It's not. It about women.

Shocking list of names. Thank you to Jess Philip's and Karen Ingala Smith. Am so sorry it's necessary.

I have heard more people today talk about violence against women and girls than ever before. About practical things we can do. That things need to change. That it's about sex, how men see women, about the value and status society places on women.

334bu · 12/03/2021 22:20

They were all killed by males. This is male violence against women and we shouldn't be sidetracked.

RootyT00t · 13/03/2021 13:34

@334bu

It appears that there are no levels to which they won't stoop.
334bu · 13/03/2021 13:43

Until the male sex accept their responsibility to change their behaviours/ challenge their brothers when they behave inappropriately and stop implicitly supporting these behaviours by burying their heads in the sands of the " It's not all Men" desert, nothing will change and some woman will still be reading out yet another list in 30,50,100....... years time.

ifonlyus · 13/03/2021 14:15

I listened to every name. I surprised myself by how emotional I found it. Very powerful I think.

MazekeenSmith · 14/03/2021 10:07

Is it definitely the case that no TW were murdered this year?
Just like the 'Jess Philips removed the names of trans women' line that is uncritically accepted by TRAs is this a line that we have uncritically accepted or is it definitely true?

OhHolyJesus · 14/03/2021 10:13

In this country Maze yes we can be sure.

There was the murder of Naomi Hersi in 2018 which was in connection to a sex and drugs binge and both the murder Jesse MacDonald and his girlfriend were sentenced. MacDonald went to prison.

If there has been a murder of a trans person in the last year we would have heard about it.
