Jess Philips counting dead women

Jess Phillips reading the names of the 118 women murdered at the hands of men in the last year, in parliament yesterday, has floored me! I listened to every name with deep respect and deep sorrow that this violence against women is just an accepted part of our society. What she did was incredibly powerful.

Thank you. I've just corrected someone who posted on Facebook that 'Jess Philips deliberately removed the names of trans women' and she deleted her post.

@MazekeenSmith

Is it definitely the case that no TW were murdered this year? Just like the 'Jess Philips removed the names of trans women' line that is uncritically accepted by TRAs is this a line that we have uncritically accepted or is it definitely true?
100%

I believe the last transwoman murdered in the uk was Naomi Hersi in March 2018.

Well done.

Jess Phillips was on Andrew Marr this morning - ostensibly to talk about this but obviously it was overshadowed by the events in Clapham. But credit where it’s due, I’m watching on iPlayer now and she’s doing her best to turn the focus back to VAWG and actions needed from government.

Very well answered when AM asked her why misogyny should be a hate crime, citing senior female police officers saying that the public’s priorities are things like burglary and the police can’t do everything (I remember this argument), and JP swiftly turned it round with the point (paraphrasing!) that this is the fucking problem, that the ‘general public’ are more concerned about burglary and bins and statues and flytipping than they are about VAWG, and shouldn’t there be some leadership from authority to address that.

A transwoman called Amy Griffiths was murdered in January 2019, her murderer was sentenced a few days ago. I believe she is the last transwoman to be murdered in the UK.

Juliesipadwillcallyouback · 14/03/2021 12:07

A TRA who has appeared round these parts before was making accusations of Jess Phillips and Karen Ingala Smith deliberately leaving women of colour out of the list as well 🙄

Ah ok thank you. I thought Naomi was the most recent.

So over 2 years. That’s really fantastic! You’d think TRAs would be shouting that from the rooftop. It’s great they’re so safe.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the way mainstream media has managed to ignore the siren calls to divert the message with ‘what about the men’s’ and ‘not all men’s’, and the more virulent voices around trans pr which encroaches on any attempt to talk about women’s needs these days.

Women’s voices have been diverted and suffocated as the norm these past couple of years so, somewhat sadly, I was pleased that it hadn’t happened now. That shows how low the bar is... but any opening of the ways is welcomed when you’re as penned in as we’ve become I guess.

I've also been pleased to hear the media start talking about 'male violence against women and girls'. Instead of just violence against women and girls. I hope they keep that up but won't hold my breath.

StealthPolarBear · 16/03/2021 07:56

This is the first I've heard of this and I'm very pleased she does this
