Helen Mary Jones statement. Plaid cymru politician apologises for transphobia and will seek re-education

The Plaid politician has put this linked statement on twitter, in which she apologises for previous transphobic comments causing harm and for retweeting transphobes. She says she accepts Plaid Cymry's belief in the 'inalienable right' to self determine your own gender, and to access single sex facilities of your gender. She and others will get training from an external organisation approved by the trans community.

So too that a woman has had to shut down her own Twitter account and hand her name over to a campaigning team to continue in her job.

'Captured' isn't a word I'd normally use but with regards to Plaid and this statement, it's standing out a mile.

A bad apology is one where the apologiser clearly still has some vestige of power/dignity/free will.

I've never been a member of any political party but I could not help thinking tonight how much my late (Glasgow Labour through and through) mother would have loved the cries of "Go, Labour! from this otherwise independista household tonight as Johann Lamont and her colleagues pleaded for women to also be treated as human in Scotland. Unfortunately, Labour failed - but we, the voters, are all still here. These arseholes need to know they cannot just do and say whatever, and that misogyny has (negative) consequences.

She's had to apologise and grovel for supporting a Jewish academic who objected to tawdry holocaust comparisons.

I saw the apology but so far haven’t found any information about her supposed crime which led to this. What was it about?

Plaid MS denies transphobia after candidate Owen Hurcum quits

Plaid's first non-binary candidate, Owen Hurcum, stood down following a row over MS Helen Mary Jones' inclusion on a Youth Cymru hustings in February.

Owen Hurcum, who uses the pronouns they and them, was on the party's north Wales regional list and said the party should begin a disciplinary process against Helen Mary Jones.

They added: "I want Helen Mary Jones to apologise in a way that is not 'I'm sorry you're offended'.

"I want a sincere apology and I want her to make an effort to learn about the community and understand why she's perpetrating transphobia.

It's the tyranny of the sensitive, isn't it?

We've got a generation that's been taught that causing offence is the worst thing you can do to a person. Being sensitive is powerful.

So we've got this misogynistic bullying in Wales, and our Labour First Minister not only deciding that TWAW but feeling the need right now to inform everyone of that fact, and the Scottish Government voting against including women in their Hate Crime Bill (unless they are TW or cross-dressers) and the Greens voting down a motion to support women's existing human rights.

Jeez. Women just don't matter do they.

Yes I have voted Labour and LibDem in the past but currently the only sane vote seems to be Conservative. My younger self would be appalled.

I've voted Plaid for over 20 years, except once when I voted Green many years ago.
That's it for me now. No more.

I feel sad for Helen because of the relentless bullying she has endured, and sad about the state of public discourse and civic life in Wales. In Scotland they have managed to force a debate at least, and to establish cross-party bonds to support and sustain each other. In Wales we just have parroted dogma and vilification of heterodox thought. Almost moved to make my own sheep jokes these days.

Over the last couple of days I've watched Harry Miller's case in the Court of Appeal, reacquainted myself with the particulars of Allison Bailey's case and watched Helen Staniland and Graham Linehan's evidence to a HoL Select Committee on freedom of expression.

In the midst of all this, what has been done to Helen Mary Jones, and what she has beeen made to do, looks like extreme Maoist style bullying. That statement was so obviously not written by her.

Helen, you don't have to do this. If you jump we will catch you. Your coerced apology won't achieve anything anyway. Nothing will ever be enough.
