@Shedbuilder

This might be the moment to publicise Conservatives for Women:

conservativesforwomen.org

As a lifelong Labour supporter that's something I never thought I'd do. In fact after reading their manifesto my partner and I (lesbian couple) are having a serious discussion about whether we can vote Conservative in May. We won't vote for Labour or the Lib Dems or the Greens. Do we spoil our ballots or do we actually try to make sure the Conservatives get in so as to prevent Labour et al having power?

I think your decision should depend on the candidate.

Great website with succinct coverage of the issues. Have sent a link to my family members Halo.

Highwind · 07/03/2021 17:40

Is there a link to his apology?

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 07/03/2021 17:55

*Peter Kyle is my MP.

Unlike Russell et al, he has never overtly nailed his colours to the mast that I have seen, and has always given the impression he understood the nuance.*

I was disappointed to see PK's name in the list. He's done some good work in the HoC on Sex for Rent and I'd also assumed that he would understand the clash of rights here. Do the APPG officers not realise or not care that it appears to be so very anachronistic for powerful, wealthy men in authority to be advocating for change that will impact disadvantaged and ethnic minority women the most? In mental health wards, prisons, refuges and by keeping many women at home. I thought someone like Peter Kyle would see how sexist this behaviour is. To do this behind the scenes in an attempt to remove women's voices from the decision making process on their own public spaces really does beggar belief. I would have thought someone as "progressive" as Kyle wouldn't want to disadvantage women further.

WarOnWomen · 07/03/2021 17:59

@Floisme

An apology is all well and good but, after presiding over such a flagrant breach of standards, I assume Blunt will also do the honourable thing and stand down as group Chair, no?

Ha!

Not a chance. B

billydilly · 07/03/2021 18:56

@BarryTheChopper He's my MP too. I've corresponded frequently with him on GC issues and he's always appeared relatively open-minded; of course being a gay man in Brighton and Hove means that he has to wear many hats, as it were. In a, possibly, unguarded moment he did say that constantly having to announce his pronouns made him feel a bit silly.

FindTheTruth · 07/03/2021 19:14

I'm sure I heard somewhere the APPG LGBT panel is being disbanded...it should be, it's been a complete disaster.

I'm just bumping this thread because I love it so much Grin

RozWatching · 08/03/2021 08:27

No point for him to stand down, he was just following orders, as they say. Some other gendermaniac would take his place. Stonewall and friends have destroyed the reputation of this APPG so it's best if the whole group goes.

You know when they say 'be kind'? This is how they treat us. Also note that the APPG advisers aren't your blue-fringed baseball bat enthusiasts. They are rather more 'old school'.

persistentwoman · 08/03/2021 08:29

Yup highame - as much sunlight as possible needed for these tactics.

I can bump with that.

@Justhadathought

heavily into the S+M scene. He was a client of mine

Really?

Whoops, sorry. I worked on a building project he had commissioned. He was always unpleasant to me at project meetings and later, when the build was finished, told me that he'd never have used my company if he'd known he'd have to deal with a woman.
Shedbuilder · 08/03/2021 09:47

@BarryTheChopper

Peter Kyle is my MP.

Unlike Russell et al, he has never overtly nailed his colours to the mast that I have seen, and has always given the impression he understood the nuance.

It feels like an even bigger betrayal therefore that he has been secretly campaigning to remove the rights of half his constituency.

I’m not sure if it’s pointless to write to him again but I’m tempted.

Barry, don't write, ask to speak to him. Lots of MPs are doing surgeries over Zoom. Look him in the eye and tell him how disappointed you are to discover he's been involved in this and how you will be pressing for an enquiry. And contact the head of the Conservative party in your constituency and ask whether they knew and what they think — and what the women of the constituency will think when they know.

Do you have a local paper? A letter in a local paper can be a good way of reaching older Conservative voters. Get the local Tories on it and Mr Kyle may find himself under pressure.

HeadIsFucked · 08/03/2021 11:33

@Justhadathought

What is it that's motivating Crispin Blunt? He seems a very unlikely trans ally

Many gay men automatically see this as being the same as the gay rights struggle......and have very little obvious concern or understanding for women's issues.

I think thats a very generous theory.

Mine tends to be, with a hell of a lot of these blokes, they are fucking delighted to be able to abuse women, and fight against womens rights. Whilst being seen as all nice, inclusive and 'progressive'. The glee some seem to show when abusing women who disagree with them, makes it hard for me NOT to think this way.

Must feel like xmas to them really. A way to 'put feminists in their place', pretend (as men have for time eternal) that feminists are bad people, and systematically breaking down every barrier women have to protect themselves. This is very obvious when it comes to sport, the amount of 'well you women wanted equality, you got what you wanted surely?!?!!?!?!?!? hahahaha' type replies.

geojellyfish · 08/03/2021 17:00

Well this is all predictably horrific, isn't it? The institutional capture is a massive threat to democracy everywhere.

MsTSwift · 08/03/2021 18:37

Just read the Conservatives for Women. Oh god am I a Tory now?

Nah. You just realise that some things need conserving. The 'progressives' are progressing in the manner of coastal erosion re women and their rights. Sad
