What's wrong with 'Cisgender'

999 replies

ASugar · 04/03/2021 15:49

As someone who identifies as a cisgender woman and works in sexual health, I am honestly confused as to why so many females (sex term) who identify with being women (gender term) dislike the term Cisgender?

Now I'm not here to tell you what to say, I am genuinely curious.

However, here is my opinion for those who may be interested.

Cisgender just means you are not transgender. That your sex links you your gender and you assign any gender terms (ie. Pronouns, Gender identity, sometimes gender expression but not always, etc). I personally don't like to think that just because I was born with a vagina means I am a woman because I know many men with vaginas and women with penises. Additionally those who don't have a gender identity, then that would mean you wouldn't use women and men as they're gender terms (according to medical professionals). It would make you non binary or agender.

I understand that the term 'Cis' has been used to insult others which for that I am sorry.
My view is that if you can't allow trans women to be accepted in society and identified as women (without the need for 'trans' infront of it constantly) then we should be using cisgender. It is a medical term that professionals such as the NHS recognize. But I understand that is just my opinion.

I probably won't be commenting as I can imagine this will be filled with comments and I don't want to disrespect anyone's views. Just a cisgender woman who wants to understand more...

And as always I would appreciate if you respect my view as I'm going to be respecting all of yours.

@Datun

It doesn't matter what I was born as. Where I was born. Who have birth to me. None of that matters.

Sorry, OP, Is it you who is trans? Or your brother? Or both?

I am a woman. He is a man.

@prrtnyao

Your sister can identify as a man all she wants but others don't have to play along. You can, if you want. No one else has to.
Sorry but you are being reported for misgendering my brother.

Totally agree @Cokie3 I totally bought into TWAW, thank goodness for MN opening my eyes.

Strikemepink · 04/03/2021 19:37

How old are you OP? How old is your brother?

Are you saying that your brother is female but identifies as a man?
That you are female and identify as a woman?

prrtnyao · 04/03/2021 19:38

@ASugar

I couldn't give a flying fuck. For all anyone knows here you're just making stuff up as you go along.

Men are men
Women are women.

Fucking ridiculous thread. I hope you tire soon and fuck off back to Twitter.

Cokie3 · 04/03/2021 19:39

OP, why not?

No, of course that's all you can really say in your answer. I never expected an actual answer from you on this. Transgender Twitterati haven't yet issued their talking points or given a directive on how to answer this yet.

If you believe in Transgender then it logically follows that you must believe in Transracialism.

It really is that simple. It's hypocrisy to believe in one and not the other.

Strikemepink · 04/03/2021 19:39

For what it’s worth I used to be in the TWAW camp previously, and I agonised over my position, I didn’t want to be unkind. It is Datun and so many others here that helped me see the truth.

Erkrie · 04/03/2021 19:39

I am a woman

Who knows who anyone really is on a forum. I don't care much. The only thing I am interested in are measurable facts. That's it. I am not interested in the deliberate obfuscation of language designed to try and hide those facts. Particularly when the end result is harmful to women. Adult human females.

RedcurrantPuff · 04/03/2021 19:40

Sorry for not answering sooner. I do not agree with the idea people can be transracial. That's all I really have to say on that topic.

So if you think this, and that people can’t self ID as disabled, and presumably that people can’t self ID say as a different age to the one the calendar gives them, why is sex/“gender” different?

ASugar · 04/03/2021 19:40

@Strikemepink

That you are female and identify as a woman?

I don't wish to disclose age.

Woman is a word that is already taken.

My mother fought so hard for women's rights.
My grandmother read books about women's history.
My forebears fought for women's sufferage.
My best friend taught women's studies
My aunt screamed about women's liberation.
At school I cheered on women's sports.
I marched with my daughters for women to be seen and listened to just a few years ago.

I refuse to let our word woman be colonized, stolen, or redefined.

Because of the studies into gender dysphoria then yes you can be of whatever gender regardless of sex. They aren't the same. Where as disability and race are linked heavily with others things that cannot be detached.

The progress here from ops experiment has already been reported back to Twitter. Not that there was much any interest in it when I looked.

vimtosogood · 04/03/2021 19:42

Is your brother interested in women or men?
Would a gay man or a straight woman be bigoted for having no interest in a "man's vagina"?

RedcurrantPuff · 04/03/2021 19:42

I’m nearly 50. I feel like a 30 year old. Can I self identify as a 30 year old, OP? If not, why not, given that if I felt like a man, that would be OK?

ThreeB · 04/03/2021 19:42

@ASugar please would you answer my question around self identifying as disabled?

Mindfulofmuddle · 04/03/2021 19:42

@ASugar

Many people have stated that they don't agree or believe in gender. Although I disagree I can respect that decision. An additional question I'd like to ask is then why do we have to know the gender of our child? Shop in stores where clothes are described by gender? Etc.

Also, why do you call yourself a woman if the term technically is a gender term. By the way, scientists and medical professionals have determined this.

We don't want to know the 'gender' of our child as gender is a social construct. We want to know the 'sex' of our child - male or female.
gamerchick · 04/03/2021 19:43

However that doesn't mean they are a mother. I don't have a mother

Personally I think that's the real thing you want to talk about OP. The reason you don't have a mother.

Because there is no medical studies and in sites that show it is possible.

Oh aye?

Posting in good faith were you OP?

Can you share the link?

In what way can't they be detached?

Cokie3 · 04/03/2021 19:43

I wonder if the Twitter people are watching this and feeling embarrassed at how inadequate a job of prosecuting their position the OP has been. I would be embarrassed at her attempts. Still she has actually made more effort that other post-and-runners, even if she refuses to answer hard questions and simply repeats herself.

ASugar · 04/03/2021 19:44
@ASugar please would you answer my question around self identifying as disabled?
Please bare in mind there are many comments and I'm not able to cover everything. I think you can think you may have an illness or disability but without a diagnosis it isn't clear.

Honestly now OP.

Does your sibling refer to men as CISmen? Do they regard men as privileged?

gottakeeponmovin · 04/03/2021 19:45

It's irrelevant I am just a woman. I don't need a descriptor. A transwoman does because they are not female. You just don't need CIS you are a woman or a transwoman. Simple
