Amazon banning “when Harry became Sally”

One step forward, one step back....

Amazon has introduced a new “hate speech policy” and banned a book about trans gender. Conservative media is referred to this as digital book burning.

Why have they banned Harry/Sally?

CoffeeTeaChocolate · 26/02/2021 19:25

It is not entirely clear but it was in connection with the introduction of a new “hate speech policy”.

Just checked - Mein Kampf is still for sale, so glad to see the Amazon ‘hate speech policy’ is being consistently applied...

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 26/02/2021 19:29

There was a campaign about When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment in 2018 - and the principal mover behind it is claiming this as a substantial victory.

You can still look at the cache of the amazon uk entry - it has 4.7 stars across 144 reviews.

HollowTalk · 26/02/2021 19:29

I've seen When Harry Met Sally tons of times and can't think of anything in there that would be classed as hate speech.

@UppityPuppity That's incredible that that's being sold when they are censoring other books.

CoffeeTeaChocolate · 26/02/2021 19:43

Hollow, it is “When Harry became Sally”. I haven’t read it but apparently it is about transgender and allegedly respectfully written.

Can anyone recommend other bookstores and online marketplaces? unacceptable that this is happening.

Thanks Coffee.

if Amazon are no-platforming gender critical voices, then they've lost my business forever. after spending a lot with them over the years

Flippin · 26/02/2021 20:02

I will be buying this book then!

Flippin · 26/02/2021 20:04

It is available in audio format from my usual audio book shop. I just bought it.

CoffeeTeaChocolate · 26/02/2021 20:10

I am about to buy it as well. I hadn’t heard of it before, but it must be thought provoking if it is banned.

The blurb:

Can a boy be “trapped” in a girl’s body? Can modern medicine “reassign” sex? Is our sex “assigned” to us in the first place? What is the most loving response to a person experiencing a conflicted sense of gender? What should our law say on matters of “gender identity”?

When Harry Became Sally provides thoughtful answers to questions arising from our transgender moment. Drawing on the best insights from biology, psychology, and philosophy, Ryan Anderson offers a nuanced view of human embodiment, a balanced approach to public policy on gender identity, and a sober assessment of the human costs of getting human nature wrong

This book exposes the contrast between the media’s sunny depiction of gender fluidity and the often sad reality of living with gender dysphoria. It gives a voice to people who tried to “transition” by changing their bodies, and found themselves no better off. Especially troubling are the stories told by adults who were encouraged to transition as children but later regretted subjecting themselves to those drastic procedures

As Anderson shows, the most beneficial therapies focus on helping people accept themselves and live in harmony with their bodies. This understanding is vital for parents with children in schools where counselors may steer a child toward transitioning behind their backs.

Everyone has something at stake in the controversies over transgender ideology, when misguided “antidiscrimination” policies allow biological men into women’s restrooms and penalize Americans who hold to the truth about human nature. Anderson offers a strategy for pushing back with principle and prudence, compassion and grace

i think that explains the ban Frank no one is allowed to be anything but affirming. Sounds like a refreshing read.

I'm a convert to Hive for book buying (as you might be able to tell by my username...) - it supports local bookshops.

BenoneBeauty · 26/02/2021 20:47

Never heard of Hive - thanks for that @UseHiveNotAmazon , will definitely be going there in future.

FindTheTruth · 26/02/2021 20:47

flippin I've tried 5 stores and they're all sold out! Will this spectacularly backfire? 😅

Aaargh, sorry, looks like Hive have sold out of Harry/Sally...

It's been brilliant for other books I've bought recently, though - no need for Amazon at all.

GrinitchSpinach · 26/02/2021 20:51

Ryan T. Anderson is interesting. He is a conservative with whom I probably have very little in common in terms of political positions, but I have heard him speak cogently and compassionately about the problems with gender ideology.

He emceed the January 2019 panel at the Heritage Foundation called "The Inequality of the Equality Act: Concerns from the Left," which platformed several WoLF feminists and the stories of concerned leftist parents of trans-identified children (as well as one male detransitioner). It's really, really worth a watch if you have an hour or so:

This is the event Posie Parker/ Kellie-Jay Keen attended as a silent audience member, for which sin she has been pilloried repeatedly (alongside the dedicated women of WoLF, who don't deserve it either in my opinion. I am glad they accepted a platform from literally the only prominent political organization in America that would give them a chance to speak).

Precipice · 26/02/2021 20:54

Just had a look and my library region has this (not at my library, but within the county area where they'll send the book to yours no problem). they have Irreversible Damage too, but that one only as an ebook. Some sensible orderer of books there! (They have also gender books in the catalogue, of course).

I'll add it to my next order; currently still waiting on them to get around to sorting my current one out (it's all order-and-collect service). Not the same for the author as buying, but still good for the library to see interest in this sort of thing.

Thislittlefinger123 · 26/02/2021 20:54

I'll be buying a copy. I doubt I'll even have time to read it, but how dare amazon decide that debate is hate speech. In fact I'll buy two copies. Up yours Amazon Grin

PotholeParadies · 26/02/2021 21:00

Got an American stockist for American MNers here. They're rallying behind free speech and have released a statement saying so.
