Amazon banning “when Harry became Sally”

One step forward, one step back....

Amazon has introduced a new “hate speech policy” and banned a book about trans gender. Conservative media is referred to this as digital book burning.

And they're still selling this 'response' to the original book, which seems really well-researched and not at all BS:

funny reviews though

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 26/02/2021 21:35

I am so glad I cancelled my Prime membership last year June.

Oh the irony of a world leading bookseller banning books!

JaninaDuszejko · 26/02/2021 21:37

The reviews of the response are excellent though Grin

sonnysunshine · 26/02/2021 21:41

Just stop using Amazon. There were plenty of reasons before this anyways.

FindTheTruth · 26/02/2021 21:43

I've been a customer since 2003. If this is true and they permanently ban this book for 'hate' speech, I'm cancelling my Amazon account

FindTheTruth · 26/02/2021 21:46

Just been chatting to Amazon. and asked them to confirm whether or not it has banned this book. The agent didn't know why it was unavailable and said 'Sure, I've escalated this to the concerned team and you will be notified in 24-48 hours regarding your concern.'

Flippin · 26/02/2021 21:56

Oh good. I will contact Amazon too.

bourbonne · 26/02/2021 21:57

How does Hive work? Do they stock and sell all the books themselves and then donate to independent bookshops? Or do the independent bookshops get involved in stocking books and fulfilling orders?

Not that it matters - I'm happy to give them a try either way - but I couldn't quite fathom it out from their website.

PotholeParadies · 26/02/2021 22:36

You need to select a particular participating bookshop and then they get part of the money.

bourbonne · 27/02/2021 20:39

Thank you! I shall give them a try.
EdgeOfACoin · 27/02/2021 20:46

Oh, that looks like an interesting book.

I will try to get hold of a copy.

I'm trying to avoid Amazon as much as possible and have been for a long time. Unfortunately they are pretty much the only game in town for e-books. The interface of the Kobe app is awful.

I try to avoid e-books but sometimes at 3 in the morning I just want a non- taxing Barbara Vine rip off to relax with.

Chimoia · 28/02/2021 10:50

Blackwells are good too.

Nimora · 28/02/2021 11:31

Another vote for Hive - super quick postage.

BarbaraofKent · 28/02/2021 11:47

I'm another who briefly was trying to think of why When Harry Met Sally would be banned from Amazon? Grin

MissBarbary · 28/02/2021 12:08

Kobo has When Harry became Sally as an e- book and an audible book.

I have been hoping for a while my ancient Kindle would break so I could justify buying a new e-reader. Does anyone have a Kobe e-reader?

The Kobe app was horrible on a tablet or phone so if I'm going to ditch Kindle I'll need a new e-reader.

MissBarbary · 28/02/2021 12:42
Digital download at apple books
books.apple.com/us/book/when-harry-became-sally/id1418912430
Google Play Books has it too. Google is cheaper than the ePub link but Kobo is the cheapest of the 4.

I've no interest in reading this book but am interested in alternatives to Kindle.

Livinginthecity · 28/02/2021 12:57

MissBarbary
I've been using Kobo a long time.

Thank you for the link usehive

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 28/02/2021 13:10

Bookshop.org also have it in stock and help support local bookstores when you buy from them. I bought Abigail Shrier’s book from them when it was unavailable on Amazon and they were great.

"The Inequality of the Equality Act: Concerns from the Left," which platformed several WoLF feminists and the stories of concerned leftist parents of trans-identified children (as well as one male detransitioner). It's really, really worth a watch if you have an hour or so

Strong agree. It's an event which is referred to a lot as part of the guilt-by-association stuff, but if anyone actually stopped to watch it it's one of the strongest panels on the subject - particularly for the US, where real mainstream discussion is so limited.

Hence you see a lot of snapshots of "evil women on the stage at evil place", but they won't give you the link to the video.

manatsu · 28/02/2021 15:44

I have this on Audible. It's not longer for sale but I suppose at least they haven't deleted my file. For now...

GCGayDad · 01/03/2021 09:39

The wider context here is really worrying and echoes the patterns seen where both mainstream media and social media are banning and censoring critical voices on gender, on coronavirus and on other issues where only the approved viewpoint is allowed.

As a British commentator, Richie Allen, points out:
"Amazon will soon be the only place left where you can buy a physical book, or the equivalent digital download. The High Street is dead. Amazon, not coronavirus, has killed it. Amazon will have total control of what you can and cannot read. It goes without saying that the implications for free speech are unthinkable."

richieallen.co.uk/book-burning-amazon-pulls-book-that-criticises-transgender-movement/

A comment in response on that page claims " I think Amazon are buying up stocks of a lot of things because when you look on other sites they are not available or out of stock.“

I can imagine that this might well be true — if so, the consequences are even worse for free speech and free thought than those of a simple ban.
