According to @SexMattersOrg on Twitter the Govt have backed down on the MOMA (Maternity) Bill and will now use the word 'mother' not 'person' in the legislation!

Women did this! We are winning!

I may have to email the good lady. I'm sure I could find some real research. Maybe some done by bother men and women.

I'm sure I could find some from left leaning organisations too!

Stupid woman!

"This is a great day for women and I am privileged to have played a part in it" - Baroness Noakes
It is a day that should never have had to happen though.
Dalyesque · 25/02/2021 15:29

Huge ray of hope. Thank you to all the grown ups in the HOL. I wonder what the push back will be?

BitOfFun · 25/02/2021 15:29

"It's time to stand up against some of the intimidation". A line in the sand.

Absolutely.

BuntingEllacott · 25/02/2021 15:29

God, I can't even say how much better I feel now. And the sun has just come out outside my window.

Chins up, wims. Keep pulling.

Shedbuilder · 25/02/2021 15:30

Yes, I'm beginning to get it for the first time. Where is Baroness Ruth Hunt, I wonder? Surely as the woman who led Stonewall down the trans path she should be up there side by side with Baroness Barker?

Emma Nicholson being gracious and magnanimous there. This is such a powerful argument for a second house full of grey-haired people who aren't under pressure to win votes.

cheeseismydownfall · 25/02/2021 15:31

Yes exactly battyorange. The very existence of the House of Lords has always infuriated me, but this really shines a light on the role it can play.

highame · 25/02/2021 15:31

I was having a really bad couple of days. Everything seemed to be going against us and now this Star HoL

BuntingEllacott · 25/02/2021 15:33

'In this instance, the rights of mothers trump the rights of trans people.'

Crikey.

TriflePudding · 25/02/2021 15:33

I've often wondered what was the point of a bunch of unelected peers having a say in our laws etc. but now I see that they can consider and comment without fear of deselection or losing the public vote so they're free to challenge.

TalkingtoLangClegintheDark · 25/02/2021 15:33

@Sunkisses

Lord Winston, one of the foremost and respected reproductive doctors, reminds the House that humans have around 30 trillion cells in our bodies that originates at the moment of embyonic genesis, and they are all either XX or XY

Reminds the House that no one change sex!

Cheering for this.... but as others have said, how bad things are that we have to be grateful and happy for simple, undeniable, pertinent facts to be spoken aloud in one of our Houses of government.

Thanks v much for this thread, Sunkisses.

BitOfFun · 25/02/2021 15:33

"The rights of mothers trump those of the trans community."

This is the kind of clarity I'm here for.

Yes, it pains me to say this but there are advantages to having law makers who do not have to always have an eye on election and appealing to the masses in the most simplistic and short term ways.

'Baroness Barker, whom I respect, has gone off the rails'

Strongest statement yet summing up that they all think she's dead wrong.

persistentwoman · 25/02/2021 15:37

"Baroness Barker has gone off the rails a bit.." says Lord Forsyth. Grin

Oh lord for an edit button I’ve been all over the place the last few days with posting mistakes !!

I've often wondered what was the point of a bunch of unelected peers having a say in our laws etc. but now I see that they can consider and comment without fear of deselection or losing the public vote so they're free to challenge

It’s taken me a while to realise this as well, but I really think that the House of Lords is absolutely invaluable to a fair society, particularly in modern life where social media plays a huge part in public opinion.

Sunkisses · 25/02/2021 15:37

"I feel that Baroness Barker has gone off the rails a bit. If we were to always use 'gender neutral' language then we wouldn't be able to call this a Maternity Bill" - Lord Forsyth (Conservative)
