According to @SexMattersOrg on Twitter the Govt have backed down on the MOMA (Maternity) Bill and will now use the word 'mother' not 'person' in the legislation!

Women did this! We are winning!

Tune in live here at 2.30pm to see history in the making: www.parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/3ca1efa2-16a5-489d-a5a0-5d929bff81f6

This is wonderful news.

I am actually crying with relief!

wheresmycrown · 25/02/2021 18:20

YES!!!! I just read this thank fuck for common sense. Pregnant people indeed

Erkrie · 25/02/2021 18:21

Well that's charming

Isn't it just. Such a spiteful and immature response to something so important. However it's pretty meaningless really. As it's not just older people who believe in women's legal sex based rights.

Erkrie · 25/02/2021 18:22

I am actually crying with relief

Same.

perpetualnamechanger · 25/02/2021 18:22

This is amazing!

Thank you for posting Smile

Nilbog · 25/02/2021 18:23

Thank you for starting this thread sunkisses

Unfortunately I missed out on watching the action but I’m grateful to all of you who shared the updates here.

I’m more of a lurker but I read, dig and cheerlead from the benches.

TartrazineCustard · 25/02/2021 18:23

Amazing, amazing, amazing reading.

Puuuulllllll.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 25/02/2021 18:24

Freddy McConnell must be rueing the law of unintended consequences. When he brought his case I don’t expect he thought in would create the legal precedent for the replacement of “person” with “mother” in legislation.

HDDD · 25/02/2021 18:25

That 'they'll be dead soon" tweet is appalling.

Shedbuilder · 25/02/2021 18:27

What Freddy McConnell's done is provide a perfect example of why the GRA needs to be repealed and why we have to stop pretending that people can change sex.

morninglive · 25/02/2021 18:29

Lib Dems have turned into political fuckwits.

Thank goodness for the voice of common sense.

Ninkanink · 25/02/2021 18:29

Fantastic.

In law and legislation, language must remain factual and true.

Exactly this.

I solemnly swear I shall “live as a man” for the rest of my life.
Immediately starts attempts to become pregnant. Something only women can do.

It’s utterly absurd.

Whatstheweatherlike · 25/02/2021 18:33

*Well that's charming.

What a disgusting Twitter message. As someone who spends their life combing these boards looking for evidence of 'hatred', she really needs to look closer to home.

NecessaryScene1 · 25/02/2021 18:34

I had thought getting the references in meant there were perhaps more specific benefits but I clearly misunderstood

The Government did agree some specific review about drafting - possibly digging into what's going wrong in the civil service? I didn't really get what that was about though.

And there were specific issues brought up like the ONS census, and 3 womens' shelters losing funding, and lack of clarity on language in healthcare causing problems. The lords were flagging all these issues and signalling that they wanted parliament to start investigating.

I think the GRAs insistence on secrecy and its extention into the #NoDebate arena was what got us here.

As many of the Peers said today, you can only get agreement by talking.

BaronessWrongCrowd · 25/02/2021 18:38

@Xanthangum

Well that's charming.
Such a lovely, thoughtful and generous comment from Helen thereHmm. Seems 'Be Kind' is only supposed to go one way huh? Never mind, Helen, in twenty years time those kids will have matured into adults and (like most of us on FWR) will have a more balanced opinion around biology, certainly none that includes glitter and unicorns.

Of course. It's not about age, it's about experience.

Hence the concept of 'every younger generation thinks this'.

So good listening to those speeches - such a lot covered - good that the Census was mentioned too.

I shall be writing my thank you notes with my AFH pens that arrived today! Do you think there'll be a "mums the word" t-shirt?

HipTightOnions · 25/02/2021 18:45

This is such a pleasure to listen to. Thank you Sunkisses.

It’s wonderful that they are taking the opportunity to crack the whole thing wide open. (Is this why so many have made the point that they would have preferred to see the word “woman”?)

They have really done their homework.

FindTheTruth · 25/02/2021 18:45

Quote from Maya tweet Things have moved on since the "gender neutral" protocol. We are on a slippery slope to complete debasement of language - chestfeeder, menstruators, uterus havers - demeaning to women (I hope @jk_rowling is watching!!)

If JKR were a peer and took part, she'd be in good company with articulate critical thinkers who care about equality not pandering to extremists.

BrownFootStool · 25/02/2021 18:46

Can we have a list of the key people to thank?

Baroness Nicholson
Lord Hunt (but which one, there are 3!)
Lord True

Redshoeblueshoe · 25/02/2021 18:46

Thanks so much for this thread. I'm just popping over to Twitter, I have some reporting to do 🤣🍷
